My daughter was on a NSL dual carriageway this morning. Weather raining and the road was very busy. Everyone doing 40 - 50 MPH.

A car on the slip road wants to join and matches speed with my daughter who sees them and tries to pull out but can't as there is no room so slows down, but can only do so in a limited way as the car behind her gets too close. ... Read more

It's clearly not your daughter's fault that she encountered two twits together.

Of course one should always slow down if you think it will avoid a collision, but I find it's not worth trying to adjust speed to let people in because basically, it's the other party's job. If one slows down and they have also decided to slow and slip in behind, then it doesn't help....

I’ve noticed with my Avensis that you do have to make sure the clutch pedal is flat in order to start it. Otherwise it’s possibly a accelerator position sensor.

Saw my first US stylee pickup truck with an MB badge yesterday. Spose its a market sector they couldn't ignore.

Actually slightly lacking in the full cowboy crassness which might limit sales stateside, but here in Taiwan the badge is a bringer of big bling and it'll probably do quite well.... Read more

Could be, I suppose, but I think probably not.

I'd never heard of or seen one before yesterday, but I note Wickipedia refers to it as a "Luxury" pickup truck, so I think its more pitched at the lifestyle blingmobile market rather than the workhoirse drivers....

Early on last year I lent my car to a mechanic (my friend at the time). He attempted to service the car but could not due to poor weather conditions. He took the car to the garage from my house and was meant to service it and return it the following day. However to my shock, I was called early on in the morning by him and he informed me that he crashed it and ran from the scene. The police were then involved and I gave the drivers details to them and he was convicted later on last year.

At this point, I was expecting some sort of restitution to be involved with the conviction but to my dismay nothing of the sort was issued. I could not of contacted my insurance company about the incident because I didn’t have insurance on the car. I gave him the car on the basis that he would have traders insurance. I then found out he didn’t have a licence at the time so it appeared the whole exchange was built on trust.

Now, I have lodged a small claim against the individual and he has rejected it entirely. I have attempted to negotiate outside of court but we could not come to an agreement. In his defence, he has stated that I had provided him the car as a rental, of which no agreement was signed. He is also claiming that it was my negligence that I gave him the car and that he made a mistake when was young and should be forgiven, I suspect he is trying to avoid any culpability of the incident. I have contacted solicitors about the matter and they have argued that it is my word against his but I have his conviction in my favour. The solicitor fees will be around half the cost of the vehicle, so I am wondering if this case is strong enough and whether it would be worth getting a solicitor to help me in the process? Read more

Therefore, in assessing whether it's financially worthwhile to proceed down some legal route, you will need to think about his financial assets, not his parents'.

I’ve now decided that I won’t be using any legal aid because it would be far too costly for this claim.

(As I understand it, a CCJ will sit on a debtor's record for six years - and no longer - unless full payment of the debt concerned is made within 30 days.)...

I would actually prefer to use a different word for them. Ongoing issues with the coolant levels in my 2 year old car. After a service last month the coolant light came on. Checked and it was below minimum level. Garage took it in and said it needed a new radiator but wouldn't know until they got it out whether it would be warranty or not. They topped it up and gave me a full bottle of G13 if needed and ordered the new part. Car went in on Monday, no radiator needed just a flush out as contaminated fluid in system. They have no idea what is was or how it got there (hmmm). 10 miles further on, coolant light comes on again. There was 1 inch of yellow fluid in the reservoir. Chappy comes out to collect it and brings a bottle of G13 to fill it up with. He was only a driver so he couldn't tell me why it had yellow in and he was adding a pink liquid. Today garage tell me there was an airlock in the system which was why the fluid had evaporated. Asked about different fluids and was told that G13 is only a temporary fluid, just to get the car back to garage. Really? Why does it state G13 on coolant reservoir then? Car will be back on Monday, 3 days to flush out the system and refill. Seriously? There's something going on here and they are not telling me.

Yes it is a Skoda Garage who have treated me like a woman consistently. I have no idea what liquid was put in the coolant reservoir and I'm concerned in case it caused some damage to the engine which is why they are keeping the car so long.

I am looking for a car under £3,000 (from a dealer), can anyone recommend any particular makes/models to look out for in this price range?

I prefer 4/5 doors and a decent amount of boot space... but I am keeping my options open, mostly looking for something with a good few years life in it before it becomes a money pit! Read more

Quite an extensive list, but fortunately they seem to just be spread over 3 garages!. Nothing jumps out as being a particulalry unwise choice, but for what its worth, i will give you my own opinions.

For reliability, the best would almost certainly be the Toyota avensis and least would probably be the Renault Grand Modus and Citroen C3 (neither are likely to have major problems, more niggly electrical or trim issues)...

Hi.
Considering a 2013/14 Xc90 r design as a replacement family car.
Have 2 kids and a large dog. We are active and go camping lots. Current car is an 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander which has been outstanding, but it’s time to change it.
What are people getting mpg In real life out an Xc90 and would you recommend one?
Will be about 10k miles per year. Mixture of country lanes and motors way driving.

Avoid one with the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel. This engine had problems with the EGR valve on cars of that vintage, and Volvo's fix was in some cases only temporary.

If mpg is important, why not go for an Outlander PHEV?

Maybe most people know this, but its taken us days to work this out.

Since Sept 2018 new cars have to use the new method of calculating MPG called WLTP.... Read more

As you acknowledge WLTP had a start date. For vehicles manufactured on dates which straddle this date you will get different figures.

Both tests are nonsense and if you want a real world estimate use the HJ real MPG data....

Hi

I searched and found a request from someone asking when were we going to get individual figures for how many people have submitted MPG figures for each model, back in 2012. Any the answer was its coming soon. But its still not been done, is that right? It would be very handy. Read more
