The car horn suddenly started sounding continuosly (not an intermittent beep-beep) as if someone was leaning on the steering wheel horn button. There were no flashing lights but a bleeping warning bell could just about be heard in the cabin.
When the key was put into the ignition and ignition turned on (but engine not started) , the horn and bell stopped. When engine was turned on, they stayed stopped. When engine stopped and key removed, both horn and bell started up again.
Any ideas what's wrong ?... Read more
One of my keys for my 2013 Merc A class will not start the car. It does open the doors, but when I put into ignition and turn. Nothing happens at all. My other key works fine. Is the transponder in the key goosed, or can this be repaired? Any information is appreciated. Read more
There are people on the Bay that reckon the keys are repairable, but I’m not so sure. Sounds like a trip to the main s******s , where they will probably relieve you of at least £200 for a replacement.
This evening coming home I passed a road blocked by a police car, with multiple fire appliances and police cars in attendance, and a huge fire in the road. According to our village web site, a driver threw a lit cigarette out of his car window. The car behind was a farm vehicle towing a large load of hay bales. The cigarette landed on the hay, and you can guess the rest. Witnesses said flames reached 40 feet high.
HJ has claimed in print that discarded cigarettes are a major cause of engine fires. They are also a major cause of fires in the countryside. As for a driver throwing a cigarette from his car when followed by a trailer of hay bales, it beggers belief that people can be so unobservant. Read more
Throwing a cigarette end - or in fact any object - from a car onto a public road in Spain carries 4 points and a fine between 198 and 3800 Euros. Throwing an object that damages the highway takes the fine up to a maximum 9800 Euros. Cause a forest fire with a discarded ciggy and it's between 3 and 6 years in prison. Dead right!
Does anybody know where the gearbox plug is on a 2001 Micra?
On my old one it was on the front but on my current one it seems to have been blanked-off.... Read more
Thanks - I've found a video for the later model

A quick update on what turned into a saga which hasn't ended.
Friend gave updates up to August. At one stage they actually ordered a takeaway to be delivered to te dealership as they had been there so long.
Tonight the latest update. They were overjoyed to get their RR back after 5 weeks in the dealership being fixed,
They hadn't driven off the forecourt when the dash lit up like Blackpool front. At 8pm they were still awaiting a courtesy car.
Has anyone been to the Festival of the Unexceptional at Claydon Estate today? I’ve just got back having had a good time looking at some quite rare run of the mill stuff, and chatting to owners. My favourite was 1980 Datsun Cherry (my Mum had one), I don’t think I had seen one since my Mum’s.
My brother also came, he enjoyed the Allegro’s as he had a ‘coupe’ (2 door, were they ever called coupe?!) and we worked out that when he had to sell it on as the rust was terminal, it was only about 8 years old! His current Fabia is 16 years old and lasting a bit better! Read more
I’m in Windsor right now at Legoland and was desperate to sneak away to see it. Sadly it was not to be thanks to my poor planning - I forgot it was on to be honest and didn’t make time for it.
I love to see these old run-of-the-mill motors preserved. I’ll spend far longer looking over a base model Ford Sierra, Bluebird, Montego, Carina or any other mass market but near extinct car than the rows of E-Type Jags and Porsche’s you’ll see at a typical classic car show.
A very nice 1988 Volvo 360 GLT for sale at one near me a while back almost had my hand in my wallet but I know I wouldn’t get the time to enjoy the hobby. It wasn’t a great car but my dad had several 340’s and I always wanted a GLT. That or a 480 ES or 440 GLT both cars that were again very unexceptional.
I have owned several cars and it happens I come back to find that somone has bumped into them. I have had windscreen wiper stolen.

But don't dashcams switch themselves off after about half an hour unless they are wired to a permanently on fuse or obd 11 socket? Not much use for all day monitoring.
Depends upon what you get but if your car is worth protecting you will one with a good parking mode, get it wired to a permanent live & have a battery protection device of some kind so that it switches off before draining the 12V battery significantly. Mine will run for about 48hrs before switching off. If you require even longer you can add in a powerbank or similar.
I am selling my car, it is old 15+ years old. How do people clean their engine bay. Is it worth the hassle?
Should I used 3 in 1 oil. I have WD40 spray and Soudal Silicone Spray (no idea what this is for, but neighbours moved out and left piles of stuff....). Read more
When I showed my newly purchased Nissan Sunny's engine bay to a friend who used to be in the bizniz, he said"
"Looks suitably dirty. Thats what I like to see. Shows no one's been messing with it, and its difficult to fake.
I’ve not seen a bell on a Focus , but it might be worth having a look in the passenger footwell fuse box. Check the 2 multi pin connectors on the bottom . They very often get dislodged. Make sure the locking bars are fully “home” .
