Have a Mercedes C320 which went through MOT problem free about a month ago and had a full service on 22/6/19 and new tyres. All running smoothly until left for holiday yesterday. Sounded a bit "whirry" - like a high powered sewing machine - when turned on and ran ok for about 15 miles, then suddenly lost all power. The engine revved but there was no drive. Had to stop and turn off the car, hope for power when put in drive but when I got it, it seemed only for 100m and then the car slowly came to a standstill again. Is this a common problem? The diagnostics were going mad with many many error codes, but I am aware that it might be one component failing and causing them all. My mechanic suggested it might be some "asbestos" belts slipping and said a gearbox strip down would likely cost more than the car is worth. Getting a second opinion but any ideas? Read more

You need to check the condition of the transmission fluid . If it’s brown and smells burnt, then the trans is possibly in need of an overhaul. There are no belts , but there are bands and friction discs and various other components that make it drive. However, your mechanic may be correct . An overhaul may be more than the value of the car.

I rub rusty metal with aluminium foil, using sunflower oil as a binder. This is a one-step self-generating metallic paint and metal finishing treatment. The foil can be conformed to surfaces much more easily than wet-and-dry, produces no grit, but does deposit a protective metal coating.

If I need a bit more rust shifting/metal deposition I use a flattened beer can as an abrasive disk in a power drill, used dry initially, then with binder....

Space is not remotely about the survival of the human race as we know it. It would be a struggle to put sufficient of us in space to create a viable gene pool.

There are 8bn people on earth at the moment. If just 1 in a million were "launched" there would be 8,000 souls inhabiting non-earth environments - for the UK as a whole we couuld send about 70. ...

I am having one of those days! Earlier on the EPC light on my golf was traced to a knackered turbo which of course will cost and now I may well have ruined the windscreen on the CLK (wonder what the 3rd thing will be?)

Bottom line is that the CLK had fine scratches in the windscreen visible in direct sunlight and oncoming headlights at night. After doing some online research it seemed hopeful that using a paste of cerium oxide on an an electric car polisher might do the trick and of course the internet is always right...ahem....... Just parted with a Hyundai Santa Fe Premium SE, 2012 vintage, 70+K and owned from new. Clearing out the file I couldn't resist a tally-up.

The all-in costs for service, repairs (brake pads & discs at 60K), tyres (a set of Michelins at 41K) and depreciation have been £257 per month of ownership. Could have been worse. Had a good dealer too.... Read more

Apologies if this is the wrong place or the question is too stupid! I had the battery changed in my Nissan Micra (53 plate) and now it wants a code for the radio to work.

Any ideas anyone please? Read more

Can’t do these for free. E bay is your best option.

Hi, back in April I bought a 67 plate Jaguar XF Sportbrake S. Unfortunately I’ve had various problems with the car. The panoramic roof leaked so that was replaced under warranty. It now creaks unlike before. I’ve sent it back but garage said it’s ok. I expect the roof to be silent. Does anyone have issues with noise from their roof? The roof is fixed panoramic.
Whilst they had my car I was loaned the same model. This car drove so much better than mine and was certainly punchier at lower revs. Best way to describe it is in normal mode it performed like mine does in dynamic sport mode! Again I’ve questioned this. An update was made but it’s no different. The garage say it’s fine.
Latest fault is the air con, a new blender was fitted but didn’t cure. Now a new heater box is being fitted and that means dashboard out. I certainly have no confidence that this will be the final fix as with the roof I’m expecting creaks and rattles (
I’ve questioned rejecting the car to my local dealer but I bought it from another approved dealer and am now using my local jaguar dealership. I have emailed the salesman I dealt with but no reply so far. I don’t think I’ll get anywhere with rejecting it if I’m honest so prepared to go through the motions of just sending it back until it’s right. It’s been in the garage 30 odd days since I’ve had it which is gutting. Only had a courtesy car for part of that too.
If anyone can advise on the roof and performance I’d be grateful and if anyone fancies telling me I’ve got a right old lemon on my hands that’ll be fine too.
Thanks.

Thanks for the replies so far.
The issue with the roof is that the garage have said it’s ok when it’s not. They’ve already had it back in and fitted new headliner clips but it’s the glass that creaks. Once this air con fault has been sorted I’ll see where I stand with the car and will certainly be taking it to the garage where it was bought.
The loan car was the same as mine 3.0 v6.
