I can hear a spinning noise when I press down the clutch pedal on my 2001 Micra. Does anybody know what it is please?

I don't think it's the release bearing. I did a Google search and that would cause a spinning noise when the pedal is up.... Read more

Most likely a worn Thrust bearing. Play in these normally make a noise when the clutch pedal is depressed.

If you are a reasonable DIY'er and have a workshop manual then replacement part just saw for approx. £10. Expect a garage to charge you 3-4 hours labour to replace plus they will most likely want to change the clutch friction plate & pressure plate at the same time. which aren't expensive, just saw a pattern Clutch kit including the bearing £32. ECP. So a total bill of £300'ish...

Hi, I'm looking to buy my first car(previously drove my mom's Honda crv)

I'm a big and tall guy so I like my space, I noticed that some of the smaller cars I have trouble getting in and out of (inside room is fine just getting in and out)... Read more

I'm still vague about the difference between an MPV and an SUV

About £3k - £5k. Mostly marketing hype, if comparing the latest cars. The MPV is a bit more practical and a bit less stylish, and will likely have lesser powered engine ranges (but not that different, mainly the lack of 'sporty' top end models), thus they come in cheaper....

Thank you for another excellent review, please keep them coming. Is there any possibility that you could review a Kia e-Niro in the near future? Read more

Thanks very much. Yeah I can do. I'm doing Kona Electric shortly, on a similar note.

£5k extra for a car that isn't as good looking as the normal version (of the same trim level), has the same spec (including engine) and won't handle as well (high centre of gravity).

Oh yeah, great value for money here. Read more

Hi everyone. My car was working earlier today and then I stopped for some errands. When I got back to it, it wouldn’t start. I’m in Manchester and it’s been heavy rain all day. Could it be this?

The radio, windows etc were working so battery isn’t totally dead. Ignition was turning over too.

I don’t know much about cars but know it could be spark plugs or battery. Is there a chance it will start when it dries out? At least until I get whatever the underlying problem fixed Read more

As above , igniter or ignition coil , both in the distributor , as common suspects . I would also look at the efi fuel pump relay . Dry solder joints on the pcb can cause intermittent start issues .

I need to change just the rear part of one of the brake cables. The part which attaches to the brake shoes and exits the back plate and then joins with the rest of the hand brake cable.

The problem is where it joins with the rest of the brake cable via a metal sleeve. Both cable nipples are firmly stuck inside the sleeve due to dirt/rust. I need to release one of the nipples from the sleeve in order to attach the replacement rear handbrake cable. I have done this before; but it took me hours: it's a real pain. It was years ago when I did it and I think I used a pair of mole grips to hold the sleeve whilst trying to prise open the part of the sleeve which gripped the cable nipple as I could not get the nipple to move to the open space in the centre of the sleeve where it would have simply come out off.... I think you are wasting your time . Ditch the lot, and fit a new cable set up to the handbrake lever. These are cheap parts . Fitting one cable is likely to cause an imbalance in the movement.

This morning at 0510 i recieved a very short phone call, so short it didn't even start ringing, just a brief buzz from the vibrate. When i picked my phone up and looked, it said the phone call came from El Salvador!. I'd been thinking about it while at work, and just tried a search on the number but could find out only that the number was from a 'metropolitan area'. Not sure what to think about it, whether it was just a mistake. Any opinions? Read more

While i did wonder if it was some kind of spam, scam or con, it didn't cross my mind that it may not actually be from El Salvador. But if it was spam, what would be the point?, given how short the 'call' was, what would they possibly gain?.

This is a scam in which the caller hopes to have piqued your interest enough that you ring back to discover who it is, whereupon you are connected to a very expensive line and defrauded out of much money. A lucrative con if sufficient people fall for it....

I am a big guy and lately the lower seat cushion in the drivers side is saggy (8 years of sitting) and not giving as much support as it used to. Is this something the dealer could fix or do I have to find a seat specialist. If I need a specialist any recommendations near Birmingham? Thanks Read more

Is it identical to the passenger seat?

Some modern cars have an airbag in the outer bolster, so a swap may not work?

Recently I had an electrical problem which was diagnosed as rodents having got in behind the battery compartment and chewed some wiring. (I assume this happened a few monts ago when it was cold and it only recently manifested itself). Luckily it was repairable and did NOT require a new loom (otherwise bye-bye a really great car). How do I now ensure that this doesn't happen again ?

The car is parked outside in the drive and fairly close to a hedge beyond which is a field. I now park it a good 5 feet or so from the hedge and have put rat poison under the car. Various online remedies suggest putting all sorts of stuff in the engine compartment but the car is used every day. There are lots of electronic products and for every "it works fine" review, there is a "it doesn't work at all" review.... Read more

Clearing up I note that, while there is a lot of pink and clear plastic, plus some spongy fruit padding apparently brought in, chewed up into confetti in the spare wheel well, two black bin bags in the boot area are apparently untouched.

Maybe rat mothers prefer pink for the nursery, but it could be the bin bags are treated with a repellent which is at least partly effective....
