We seem to be moving more and more towards electric cars now, but what really struck me is that despite a new means of propulsion, all cars still have the conventional steering wheel and pedals.
Has nobody tried a joystick (I remember a Saab with a joystick on Top Gear many years ago?), or a PlayStation controller to appeal to the youngsters who aren’t so interested in driving?
There must be other ways, even better ways to control a car, especially electric cars. Why have no different methods of controls ever caught on? Even secondary controls like indicators and lights seem to be controlled in a similar way in most cars.
Is it just convenience? Or overly cautious manufacturers? Will we ever see anything really different in car interiors or controls? Read more
Following from the recent post regarding bumper stickers, I have seen a few interesting roadside signs. Mostly home made to get a simple message across.
A local farmer put a large sign on the roadside near the entrance to the farmyard, it read:... Read more

"Slough, nuclear free zone" (town ?)...
My wife has read something that is saying that a dog guard is not good enough and that dogs should either be in a crate or a seat belt and that insurance could be invalidated if not complied with.
So have thousands of dog guard manufacturers all been put out of business? Are all dog owners who carry dogs behind a dog guard all doing so illegally? If we have an accident would we find our protection invalidated?... Read more
Amazing anyone survived pre-dog restraint laws. I think there are far more things to be horrified about than a dog with its head out of the window.
Indeed there are. But it certainly gives me paws for thought when I see drivers allowing large-ish live animals to roam the cabins of their cars.

Fact is all cars depreciate.
No they don't....
I have seen ONE genuine Police car so far this month.
Boy racers scream up and down the high street past my shop all day in cars, vans and on bikes; they have almost zero chance of being stopped , and dont they know it.
Last fatal crash on my street killed 4 people and the investigation estimated they were doing 89mph at the moment of impact - in the middle of a 30mph residential area.
Late most evenings you see/hear at least a dozen vehicles go flying past at 60+ PER HOUR (mostly badly modded cars and high powered bikes).
With an average of 2 patrols covering around 100 sq miles of the town and multiple villages at night, there is NO deterrent. Read more
A 24% reduction in the traffic police. Ridiculous.
Way too much reliance on income-generating technology whilst the government creates more and more means of an indirect taxation revenue stream.
More police presence is required and at least to the 2010 levels.
This could easily be covered (and some) by the removal of the triple lock state pension scheme and back to the double lock at least. On an ever increasing aging population, this is policy is crippling the country's finances. Best part of £900 saved per pensioner over five years - there are 19 million pensioners in the UK
The working population cannot keep on top with these in excess of inflation pay rises (the past 12 years) when the real world has just about been keeping incomes on par with inflation during that time
Moving the state pension goal posts to 67/68 (not that I'm personally happy with this but accept it) will help but that is just batting it off so far into the distance.
Jealous of your average pensioner, you bet ya.
I thoroughly agree with the new driver licence proposals.
Look at what it has done for accidents in Australia.
I also like the restrictions placed upon L drivers in Australia too.

I think this is the right initiative. in our country it is too easy to get a driver's license and many young people are unaware of the responsibility.
Hello,
I have to go for MOT this month. Just checking the condition of the car. ... Read more
I had a 2007 Touran 2.0TDI which I bought from VW with 26000 mls on it. All was fine until about a month out of warranty when the airbag light lit up, for no apparent reason. I googled it to find that thousands of Vw's, Seats and Porsches and Skodas were rife with the same problem. It seemed to be nearly always caused by a yellow connector joint under the front 2 seats that joined a cable which monitors the front seat belts and airbags.
I bought a cheap code reader (and canceller) from fleabay for a tenner and sure enough it gave me the seat restraint code as the culprit and I cancelled it. The light went out, great. A year later I had to perform a really nasty swerve and hard braking manoever and 'ping', the airbag light came on again. Out with the cheap scanner ( CAN VW/AUDI Memoscanner u281 if you are interested) and got rid of the warning light. Six months later I was pushing my seat back a bit quick after my wife had been driving it and it came on again! I fixed it again quite quickly....
Hello,
I have the check engine symbol on my dashboard.. At one point there were other sumbols i.e. ABS, trye deflation. Took to Honda garage , they tested the cat and quoted P2040 code. They reset so the symbol disappeared and mentioned I might need a new catalytic converter if the problem persisted.. The car is 6 years old and 90000 on clock. I run it well nearly every day. This morning I tried to accelerate and the car lost a little power and the check engine symbol started to blink. A few hours later when I drove the car, the symbol stopped blinking and the car had regained full power. What I would like to know if possible, what is going on with the car and do I need a new catalytic converter, which I think is unacceptable on so young a car. I even tried a cat clean because I thought it was gunged up, obviously not. Many thanks for any advice before I tackle Honda. Read more
