Really annoyed to get a refund of road tax through.
Called the DVLA, they tell me an Authorised Treatment Faciltiy (ATF) has entered my reg plate as the car scrapped.... Read more
The problem isn't just a car's ground clearance, but how much the front in particular overhangs from the wheels, as the larger the overhang, the more chance the front will scrape on speed humps. Seen this happen a LOT with sports cars, which occasionally can get beached.
The same can happen on sharp increases in the incline of a road - remember the Clarkson-era Top Gear 'road trip' episode when one of them (May?) got beached more than once with his supercar on Italian or French (I can't remember which) roads at a junction?
It's about time this was done. How many of us can remember a road that has just been completely resurfaced by the council gets dug up by a utility firm just a few weeks later for planned works, then the poor quality patch work lasts about 10x less than the rest of the road and us taxpayers have to pay for the (many) repairs. Five years guarantee?. Five months at present, if your lucky. On my commute a stretch of road was completely dug up and new tarmac laid. They did quite a good job. Unfortunately within a year the Gas company dug the road up and now it's like the surface of the moon. Out our way they usually just lay a load of chippngs on hot tar, leaving huge waves and mounds of loose chippings which last time broke my windscreen. It took over two years to get the potholes filled in my road, and within six months they had reappeared. The one outside my house, I did myself and it still looks good after five years.

Re : Blindingly obvious, you can get tinted visors that fit below the standard visors, effectively doubling the size. Though transparent, they effectively prevent glare with a low sun. They are usually advertised in though catalogues that fall out of the Sunday papers. Please don't wear a hat, it's scientifically proved that the increased pressure of the hat band around the head impairs driving, just think of the worst drivers they wear baseball caps or trilbys.
You have confidently stated "it's scientifically proved that the increased pressure of the hatband around head impairs driving" - that made my day slightly brighter with a smile but worringly curious. Please can you signpost me to this emminent research you allude to, or did it get tossed with the Sunday papers? But then again, I have to agree with your correlational concluson about baseball caps from my own quasi-experimental observations!
There are places that will carry out a lower cost oil change. Under £50 at National Tyres on a 2015 Leon 1.4 ACT. Although I've never heard of Lukoil. Kwik fit at £55. Read more

Hi
Looks like the Wife’s Car may be a Write Off.. Had it down to the body shop yesterday they reckon 2 new Doors and the sill needs repairing..I guess our Car is worth about £2000 book price so I’m thinking with the cost of repairs and it being a 59 plate they may write it off..
Which means we have to look for a replacement,we don’t do a lot of mileage shopping and the Wife takes it to work 6 miles their and back and that’s only a couple of days a week.
So looking around at various options, I’m wondering if a used Prius might suit our needs. I’m thinking of the 1.5 Hybrid maybe a 2008/2009 plate I realise their going to have a lot of mileage at that age but if I can find one with decent service history, would they be worth going for ?
Thanks

£5k isn’t enough to get a decent Prius but it can get a reasonable Auris Hybrid which is essentially the same car mechanically.

But here’s an example of something I’d be looking at on this sort of money. Nothing complex, no battery pack to degrade and nicer to drive while also more spacious and still capable of 50mpg on a run. Possibly near you too?

Theres that word "could" again. Of course you can opt not to buy an EU produced car. As for the pound falling it may also rise. Read more
Leaving the EU is dumb. Blaming the EU for the problems caused by right-wing governments in the UK also dumb.
Putin, Trump and the disaster capitalists of the ERG want Brexit. If you wanted a single reason not to vote for Brexit, Stephen Hawking thought it was a bad idea. I think I'll go with the planet's brightest bloke.
Anyone ever had a MOT done in NI? Can a British car be MOT'd there? Read more
Oh I thought NI was the UK but not Britain. Don't they have their own system of MOT and tax etc?
We live in United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland had devolution long before Scotland and there are therefore significant differences in law and its administration. ...
I’ve just had my 2011 CR-V serviced and the stroke sensor arm was found seized. They want £263 to fix it. I’ve never met one of these before so what I want to know is why won’t a drop of WD40 do the job. Is £263 reasonable? And how easy is it to replace myself if necessary?
Thanks

Thank for that. Will try over the weekend.

What a nightmare. I agree with the OP on not driving it meantime. The problem with the automated Kafkaesque camera and tax systems is that you could have a whole lot of grief before an "intelligent person" gets involved.
My limited experience of DVLA is that they are pretty efficient and will sort this out. After all millions of cars are scrapped every year so mistakes like this must happen daily.
