Hello I just bought a 2005 Ford Focus. The rear window wiper stops in an upright position, except when you activate the rear screen wash, then it wipes properly. What's the most likely problem? I'm waiting for a Hayes manual from eBay and will attempt to fix it myself. Thank you. Read more
The wiper motor will have a set of phosphor bronze contacts which bear upon a set of corresponding metal circular contacts. Power is always applied to the motor unless it is in the park position by virtue of the fact that the circuit is completed via these rotating rings if it is in the wrong position. When the contact wears the circuit is broken and it only runs for as long as the steering column switch is in the on position ow the wash wipe circuit is active. Buy a new motor or do as I did and drill out the rivets holding it together. take an old relay and solder the contacts from this in the position of the worn contact. Reassemble with appropriate screws and it will be fine. My astra Mk4 one has been working for 7 years since it failed in this way. I initially tried a new (cheap) motor from Europarts-it lasted about 2 hours! Decided to repair the old one and bingo!
I have a Renault kadjar on the motability scheme. Being a large person I drive with the seat as far back as possible. There is barely enough legroom space in the back for my teenager son. I want to buy a mpv/suv or any vehicle that has high seating and is easy to get in and out. It needs to be a petrol version and have low insurance group since I will be starting with nil NCB and may want my daughter added to insurance. Main preference is a torque converter auto for reliability. Budget is £8k but may go above. How reliable is the suzuki scross cvt box? Thanks Read more
That's more like it.
Any MPV will have far more internal space than an SUV of similar external dimensions.
Anyone used Terra Clean on a engine or DPF ?
Any thoughts on how effective it is ? Read more

Yes 2011 Swift. Thanks for the reply.
There has been a lot of news (and a fair bit of scare-mongering) about the "fate" of UK drivers finding themselves in an EU country post-Brexit, but so far almost nothing about the opposite scenario, i.e. drivers/cars from the EU in the UK.
Out of idle curiosity, I wonder what will happen in a no-deal scenario. The UK has always been fairly relaxed about EU driving licences, as one example, which can be kept until expiry (which for a German driver can be for life; a friend of mine in a car hire once hired to a driver from Leipzig with a DDR-era driving licence!) There is also a fairly tolerant attitude towards foreign drivers with non-adjusted headlight beams, lack of nationality stickers and so on. And of course, parking fines are rarely followed up.
As I said, just wondering... What do backroomers think should happen? (Ducks under parapet as gunfire begins!)

My insurance company emailed me today with details of how to apply for a green card. With such uncertainty they are suggesting one is applied for to ensure continuity of cover. It has to be a hard document and should be applied for at least 4 weeks before travelling. How quaint.
Hey everyone,
Mark from HJ here. We’re lucky enough to have you enthusiastic lot on this forum of ours, so I thought I’d ask you for some suggestions...
We’re looking into revamping the car review format on the website, to make them an even better and more useful resource for car buyers. So I wondered, do you have any suggestions - anything you’d like to see? If ever you’ve thought that our reviews are lacking in some way (or any car reviews anywhere, for that matter) here’s your chance to let us know.
Obviously I can’t promise to implement your ideas, but I can promise we’ll listen to them and try to incorporate them into the new format. We’re keen to make sure our reviews continue to be the best you’ll find anywhere.
Thanks a lot in advance. Appreciate your time and thoughts.
Mark. (The video review guy.)

Hi Mark. How about some indication of delivery times and possible discounts available. Not easy for a new model, but could the reviews be amended after it has been around for a year or so. For example there is an excellent review on here for the Volvo XC40, but it turns out there is a 6 months or more wait for one.

You need to get the car running in a satisfactory way and THEN service it. IF you cannot get it running you will have wasted your money on the service items So the dash problem remains your first priority as suggested by other people

I'm afraid we do need a serial number in the format M or V followed by (usually) six digits.

Hello , I’m just looking for advice on whether I am able to fix the dent in my car at home or whether it would need to be seen by a mechanic. I scraped it against a tree stump when reversing out of a driveway and it is dented on the right rear panel just underneath the fuel cap. It’s minor but noticeable so I’d like to get it sorted but I’m reluctant to spend a fortune to get it fixed.

There are franchises that will come to your house or work. You could send a photo of the damage and they will give you an idea. The dent may come out or be best filled. Using body filler and rubbing down to a fine finish is fairly easy. What is a lot more difficult is using the cans of primer and finished colour to get a decent job. If your car is worth decent money best to get a professional.
@ Engineering Andy Budget of £8k to £9k is for the car, as advised I have spread sheet calculating predicted running costs of the cars on my shortlist.
My annual mileage is just shy of 12,000 miles consisting of a daily commute total of 25 miles across country with about4 miles dual carriageway and 3 miles town driving....
