Hi all this is my first post post and help someone can answer this question regarding DPF's.
I see a lot of online advice that DPF's need to be activated (regenerated) at least once a week to stop them getting blocked, and this can be done by going at 50-60 mph for 10 minutes on a dual carriageway/motorway. Now what im perplexed about is this; I live in London where its slow traffic most of the time and I see plenty of diesel vans about, mostly used by local tradesman who, I suspect, don't go on long fast journeys up the motorway each week. Theres plenty of diesel transits/connects/combo's ect ect driving about; my work mate has a diesel Vauxhall combo, only drives relatively short distances day in day out, and he don't have DPF problems, neither it would seem do all the other van drivers. ... So, till last year, we had occasional "Football" impressions on the car, when it was parked in the driveway.. Friendly polite requests met with mild aggression.
Problem solved.. neighbour concerned has a new SUV to replace his old banger and which just happens to be parked on the street as they don't have a driveway. This happens to be where the kids were playing football.... Read more
You could always plant some attractive ornamental shrubs with great big thorns. Here in Australia Bougainvillea has lovely flowers, grows very fast and is like a botanical razor wire. Looks lovely but you have to be very careful pruning it and you don't want to fall into it. Footballs would be punctured for sure. No doubt there will be something similar where you are....
Hello All,
Just wondering if anyone knows the exact location of the TPS for a MK1 focus 1.8 petrol please?... Read more
On the throttle body, on the opposite side to the throttle cable. What’s wrong with yours?
Pastor Niemoller means nothing to some of you doesn't it. Give these people an inch and they will take a mile. The spy in the cab remember that?

So this is prompted by a friendly argument I've had with a couple of family members. They think I'm nuts for having never had breakdown cover. I've been driving for 25+ years and in that time, despite driving some pretty ropey cars, I've broken down twice. In both cases I called up the nearest recovery firm and paid them cash to take me home or to a garage. Total cost: £120.
I'm not sure how much cover would have cost me over those years but I imagine it would have been well into four figures.... Read more
Had it last year under insurance my GF arranged. Was pretty cheap but I didn't use it and didn't renew, and I have possibly the worst car in Taiwan.
In the UK I never had it. though I did once get helped by an AA patrolman on the A9 in a snowstorm. Throttle cable (Marina Estate, 1800 B Series. Only the best...) had jammed on and we were accelerating uphill. Wasn't sure how the sudden engine-braking effect of switch-off would affect control (still don't know) so told the GF, who was driving, to de-clutch and switch off "simultaneously". She did (a) but not (b), causing the engine to race its nuts off until I turned it off and we coasted to a layby....
I have listed a couple of cars that I am considering purchasing. Please can you give me your thoughts / opinions on them...
The first 2 are Honda Jazzes. The other 3 are Avensi(s)? All from private sellers.... Read more
Thanks SLO76 / Heidfirst for your inputs.
Called regarding the first Jazz that was advertised. Car has not been serviced by dealer for long time. Hence eliminated the Jazz....

Thanks. I missed that bit.
Nicely ironic that the trophy consists of ICE parts. Read more
Seem to forget that the power station will still pollute producing its electric power, and there's an inefficiency to consider, so more pollution, not less. This thing starts at £65 grand and ends up at around £90 grand adding all the goodies, nearly double my car with the same level os spec. Then how long do the batteries last and how much to replace? I think this dragging heavy batteries around is old hat technology. Before electric vehicles become viable, we need a step change in technology, and maybe the hydrogen fuel cell is the answer. I'm not spending this kind of money on a fad that could become ancient tech in a few short years. The IC engine has been a fantastic development in world travel, and is still flexible enough to beat off these upstarts until a suitable electric technology is developed. And for this money, the range is still not acceptable. Don't forget you need some miles left in the 'tank' to get home or to a charging point. No thanks.
Maintaining the estatus quo. Never ceases to amaze me the number of people who think engine braking and therefore clutch lining is less expensive to replace than brake pads. Read more
VAG dealer, re dieselgate; "When all this comes out in the wash, you’ll find that most manufacturers have done similar things.”
How right he is.I know for definite of another ingenious emission defeat by another very well known European manufacturer. I have also heard rumours of others.
I had that 3.4 V6 in my last Landcruiser, its a very very tough engine which propelled the much heavier LC at a surprising rate, leaving most cars standing, totally reliable.
Convert it and stick an LPG tank under that Hiace and you've got the basis of a cracking totally reliable vehicle without any DPF issues or other maladies that haunt the latest vehicles.
