Hi,

I am currently driving a Seat Altea 1.9 tdi that has been very reliable for the last 2 years and the 18k miles I put on it. All little stuff.... Read more

“The one I am liking the most overall is the S-Max so if you only have time for a brief comment I would love some opinions on the TDCI lineup and how to tell the PSA derived from Ford's own.“

The only Ford engine used in the these was the old 1.8 TDCi. It’s noisy and a bit slow but quite robust if looked after and there’s no DPF to worry about. At this money I wouldn’t discount it but I also wouldn’t really recommend buying any cheap diesel despite this. A sub £3k S-Max will have 100k plus mileage and be right at the stage where potentially ruinous bills await. I’d either spend more or reign yourself in a bit.

I’d possibly buy a petrol one or a good petrol Zafira at this money. Any diesel S-Max you buy will likely be well overdue a timing belt change also which on these will set you back a good £400 plus including water pump while the 2.0 petrol uses a chain driven Mazda motor.

The "Health Check" at the 3 year annual Dealer service (23000 miles) Volvo V60 produced a report on the rear near-side tyre (1.8, 3.4, 3.4) , off-side (4.2, 4.1, 4.2). The "Check NSR Suspension" was ticked as "OK"!

Whilst it was in the service department I received a phone call advising me that the tyre was worn and should be replaced. I was then subject to a fairly aggressive sales pitch for £250 of Michelins. No reference was made to the suspension.... Read more

Surely this indicates a misaligned/worn suspension?

It does indeed but at 3 years old it will not be warranty work unless something is broken. In those 3 years you have had plenty of opportunity to damage it yourself. No manufacturer covers wheel alignment for this reason....

Hi,

Several months ago I bought a 2001 CR-V Auto with 80k. After a few weeks noticed a noise coming from 'somewhere' Very long story short my local mechanic has finally been able to hear it and has identified it as coming from the gearbox. ... Read more

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. Sounds like a good idea. Bit worried if it was the torque converter as I've heard that that's a bit on the pricey side.

The fluid in the transmission is clean and at the right levels (it does have a dipstick) but a flush is probably a good idea. ...

I had an accident at the end of last year when someone reversed into the side of my car. The car has been repaired, and they have admitted liability. LV have got their money back from Admiral, the other party's insurer. I have not yet had my excess back, which I paid direct to the repair company, and it has been 2-3 weeks now since they refunded my insurer.

So, how do I go about getting my excess back? The obvious answer is to rink Admiral. Should I do this or does it have legal issue e.g. I should go via my insurer? Sorry if this question sounds stupid, but I want to go through the correct procedure, cos the law is complex, and I don't want to inadvertently make mistakes. Read more

I can’t understand why Admiral don’t pay up ASAP.

Because they're insurers. Its in their interests to hold on to every single penny as long as they possibly can.

Is this now a fail?

On a similar subject, can you still have an MOT a month before and still use car even if it fails (unless its considered unroadworthy) or has that changed now? Read more

The Wife was driving in Kilmarnock yesterday, when she had an accident on the Bellfield Interchange.
From what she has told me of the incident,I’m trying to figure out who was in my the wrong.
She had entered the Roundabout off off the A77 slip road coming from Glasgow. From what I remember of the location it’s a 2 lane slip road to the Roundabout. She was on the inside lane.
When she entered the Roundabout she needed to take the 4 th exit Bellfield turnoff. She had kept to the inside lane all the way round when she approached and drew level with the 3rd exit a Vehicle crashed in to her drivers side Door. I’m guessing the other car was on the Outside lane and had decided to take the 3rd exit. They exchanged details the other Driver mentioned that my Wife was in the wrong lane which is why the Accident occurred. Myself if I was entering the Roundabout to take the 4 th exit Im guessing I would have entered on the Outside lane and crossed over just before the 4th exit
Any views on this ?

It would be interesting if Toyota produced their version of the BMW Performance Power and Sound kit, already available in this application with M140i/M240i/440i, etc. No effects on BMW warranty/emissions. Read more

Hi John,
Just to let you know the images you show in your article correspond to the so called "1 stroke innengine", not the achates. They both use opposed piston technology but the achates engine has 2 crankshaft whereas the one you show (those blue toys) are the innengine rotative one. Read more
