“Thanks. Funny how the more time and trouble I took to understand physics and learn about car mechanics the luckier I seemed to get.”

I’ve seen loads of cases where luck has gone the other direction John including plenty of people who refused to believe that rubber belts deteriorate and need changing eventually. It’s still one of the biggest killers of cars today and a quick visit to any scrap yard will reveal plenty of motors that’ve landed prematurely in there thanks to an ignored belt change.

Considering purchasing one of these (2009 to 2014 1.8) but do they have timing belt or chain, If chain I presume this doesn't need changing unless a fault occurrs? Read more

Yup, tis a chain. I own one and it’s an excellent used buy. Mine has been faultless since buying.

Hi All,

In July 2017 I replaced my trusty Kia Cee'd with a 2011 Focus 1.6 Petrol (Mk3), the Cee'd had done 130,000 miles and was getting to the age where wear and tear meant it was costing a lot but it was still infinitely reliable.... Read more

I want to buy an old Focus 2012 0r later, for my son. We can buy from a showroom, but he has already selected a car, maybe some of his friend's car. He wants to buy only that car. Now the question is that, is it worth spending that much money on that car. Or I should consider another car for my son. Also, I am worried about the previous record of that car, because the car may create problems for me regarding Encumbrance records, Written off or stolen. Is it worth checking these details at https://www.quickrevs.com.au

HI, my daughter came home last night and parked her car as normal. In the morning she noticed the rear lights were on but not full brightness. she checked the switches and all were off. The number plate light was off and no sidelights at the front. Not sure if it is the brake lights but the rear lights are led's and is hard to see what one is what. When the brake is pushed the lights are on full as are the tail lights when switched on. What could be causing a half light even when the ignition is switched off. Any info would be a great help. Thank's Sparky 100. Read more

I'm still looking for a used Fabia Mk2. I just viewed a 64 plate 1.2 HTP 68bhp model at a Skoda main dealer. Nice car but service history is incomplete.

On listening to the engine I heard a 'slightly tappy' kinda sound that I'd not noticed when viewing other Fabias. Now it may be that this sound is perfectly normal for this engine and I've just not noticed it before...

Could you have a listen to my vid of this? What I'm on about is a bit more apparent 29s to 33s - when I moved my phone... Does this engine sound as it should?

Very difficult to assess a noise s/hand via a video. If it is an Fsi or Gdi engine ,then the injectors can be fairly clattery. Listen to a similar engine to compare.

Hi all,
I'm looking to purchase a car. It will be around 5 years old (as they're about £5-6k and that's all the budget will allow for).

I'm not looking for anything fancy but I am looking for the most reliable car. A car that will keep going and going. My last car was a Ford Focus and it had no end of problems, a lot of them were design faults that were never recalled and left to the buyer (me) to fix at a cost.

I've heard that the Japanese cars are the most reliable. I've also heard that the South Korean cars are on par with the Japanese cars when it comes to reliabilty.... Read more

Petrol Mazdas are reliable and are as good to drive as Focuses, diesel versions have issues and are really only suited to long distance driving. As a Mazda car owner of 13 years, mine has been very reliable, although some parts (as with all cars) do wear out, and that manufacturer prices are higher than some makes, but not terrible.

I would say that overall, Toyotas (and Lexuses) are the most reliable, just ahead of Hondas (which cost more for maintenance but have better engines and handling), Mazda, KIA/Hyundai are quite similar, though the latter two (same company) have improved a lot in the last 10 years and whose sales are growing in step, helped by their best warranties. They also are getting better on the handling, comfort and performance, but it often depends upon the car and what you want out of it....

Has HJ abandoned this?

I been having a loss of power in my Honda CRV the past few months.

It only seems to happen when I leave work to go home at night

I work on a steep hill, it only happens for a second or two then picks up speed again.

I try and drive aggressively and normally..... still the same.

Took it to Honda, they said they plugged it in and couldn’t see any faults.

They should drive it really and is becoming annoying for a new car.

Car has only 8k miles since last April.

Any help? Read more

Possible cause is cold lube oil, turbo a little reluctant to spool up and produce enough boost to allow more fuel injected, plus the load on the engine from the alternator just after a cold start, plus aircon if you are using it. And it's an auto box with cold fluid in it.

It's a wonder the poor little engine can drag the car out of the car park, it's only a little diddy 1.6 after all!
