Any ideas on a dead cheap car ,less than £2500 which is somewhat reliable.
The reason why I ask is because I use the car only for a few months every year and it tends to sit in the garage for the remainder of the time.
I had a Lexus LS430 which was prohibitively expensive to repair and with the last fault as a result had to get rid of it.

Don’t mind large engines and in fact prefer large petrol engines and insurance costs are not a problem however a reasonable reliability would be an advantage (this tends to leave out Audi and BMW)

So it looks like there are only a few Hondas and Toyotas left.

Any thoughts on older BMW’s or Vauxhall’s?

Or any other suggestions ? Volvo perhaps
Thanks for any suggestions,however outlandish they may seem.

That’s one I hadn’t thought about before. Is this 2.5 engine in the Volvos in the V70?

It is and shared with the Focus ST also. A gutsy car but comfortable and discrete too. A tad greedy for everyday use but then so is everything else you’re looking at. Try a good one and I’ll be surprised if you don’t buy it.
Went to a local one where the car was boxed in by other cars so didn’t drive it,but agree with the sound, an elegant understated burble

I just read this in the Daily Mail, what do the BRs think ?

I just hope to god we don’t drive one of these past a microwave, we could end up going back in time

Looking at what the times are, I don't think it would be too bad being behind the times. I would be quite happy to go back 50 years for everything except dentistry and medicine.

Sorry but your welcome to those times, I had no problems years ago working on cars as it was an enjoyment and gave great satisfaction fixing cars,apart from being a necessity. but now I'm older and can see what can be done in modern tech, I wish they were available then....

Oh dear. your car is not exactly powerful so I don't think anyone was accelerating when you did!

A Golf 2.0 tdi is considerably quicker and much more torquey than your car, never mind the performance versions!

Hi,
I have just performed the Instrument Cluster Self-Diagnostic Mode on my Ford Focus 2006 Mk2 1.6 LX Petrol.
I took note of the DTC codes. The other details, such as speed and temp, etc.., I am not interested in.

I have been experiencing an Powertrain light showing intermittently and was hoping this self-diagnostic test would enlighten me to the problem. It is due to see a mechanic soon but I am keen to help get to the problem.

The test returned a number of DTC codes. On my car the the odometer showed 'dtc' then flashed the acutal DTC code, the flashed 'dtc' again then the next code. Anyway, please can someone help give me the name/problem for each code? My DTC codes are:
E200
A103
9602
9600
E197
9318
d147... Read more

That's sensible advice re diagnostics. I recommend Forscan available on

Internet auction sites. This gives more info that is helpful and you can reset dtc and see if it comes back. Can get if for around £20 if you have a lap top. can post link if you need one.

Hi all, I bought a 2013 Mazda CX-5 in Oct 2018, the milage was170,000 kilometers. It was driving grand until Dec 2018 when it lost power and the turbo chargers went along with the engine... Brought it back to car dealer, they had it over a month... Got it back in Jan and they said they sent it to a main Mazda garage to be fitted with a new engine and turbo chargers. I got a further 9 month warranty off the dealer. Then last week (March 2019) the heater stopped working and I got it checked and there was no coolant. It took 3.5litres of coolant. Brought it back to the dealer. They ran tests and told me that it looks like the head gasket is gone... I'm not up to speed on the mechanics of a car. My question is, what's the best course of action? Should I tell the dealer that I no longer want the car? Is it most likely going to give me more trouble now? They had the car so long the last time I feel like they messed me around. It's a big car dealer and doesn't neccenecesn have a bad rep as far as I know. Read more

I agree with SLO - lots of reports about the Mazda 2.2L diesel giving problems at a low mileage, let alone with 105k miles up when you bought it.

I think Sarah is in Southern Ireland by the use of some of her phrases, so the Consumer Rights Act of 2015 will not apply....

I there guys...

I own a peugeot 306 1.9 dt (Xud9TE) 1998, lucas pump, since my current turbo have been working hard for a long time, sooner or later it may die...

So, to prevent myself, i was wondering wich turbos go well with this engine?? i was looking for one that could be almost "plug and play", since i´m replacing it at home (probably).
Turbos like Garret gt17 or gt15 (from the HDI's engines) are easy to install? What it takes to replace it? what do you guys sugest?

i Let here some mods/specs i have done:

Top mount intercooler;
Stock turbo: Garret T2 (not shure) 1.25 bars full boost (~3200rpm);
Lucas pump;
- turned 90º on max fuel;
- LDA almost to the max (tell me if it's wrong doing it);
- Advanced 1 "teeth" on the belt (pump timing);
Decat (keeping the middle and back box)
Stock Intake
Running 10W-40 semi-synthetic oil.
(it is not smoking like those crazy diesels )

Thanks everyone for the help. Read more

I had the droplinks, wishbones, lower arm bushes and balljoints replaces yesterday. Now when I turn the steering wheel half a turn, it seems to tighten up (almost like a slight loss of PAS) and doesn't return to centre easily like it did. It's more noticeable when going slow (like in a car park) and not so much on the open road.

I'm having 4 new tyres and wheel alignment later today. Is it likely to be the alignment considering what work has just been done? The tracking feels fine...doesn't pull etc. although in a straight line the steering wheel is more off centre now than it was...but drives in a straight line fine with minimal correction. Read more

I would have thought that after doing all those, a tracking check would have been routine. Don't like the sound of tight steering though. Go back and ask them to check it properly and centre the steering while they do it.

I am going to give in my 68 reg CR-V to the dealership for investigating the flickering infotainment screen problem (known issue with the 5th gen CR-V, there's even a service bulletin from Honda in North America, the service department here was not aware of the issue as there are only a very few 5th gen CR-V's sold yet).

The dealer offered me a replacement vehicle while my car is being looked into but with an insurance excess of £2500! Other option was that I arrange a fully comprehensive cover to drive other cars. Standard cover on my policy as has always been the case is that I can drive any other vehicle but the cover is restricted to third party only. ... Read more

I've no idea what sort of insurance our Honda dealer has on his loan cars, I always check that the vignette is in the windscreen and the green card is in the glovebox along with the reg document. We never have to sign for the loan car.

Hi,

I’m really hoping someone can help me, I have had a nightmare and I don’t know what to do.
I purchased this car 4 months ago, it’s 2011 reg and had done 92k. The cambelt snapped and destroyed the valves and pistons so I purchased a complete replacement engine for 1200 from Charles Trent. A mechanic quoted me 350 to install the engine, I bought a replacement cam belt kit, water pump and a clutch release bearing. The mechanic installed the engine but the car just won’t run, it cranks but does not start, mechanic then gave me a bill for 450 because it took an extra day (even though it does not work ??) another mechanic now has car and has changed the fuel pump and injectors have been primed, various sensors and senders replaced, swapped the fuel injection pump and injectors over and it still doesn’t run. I’m now 2200 in and my car does not go, I’m so ridiculously stressed. Diagnostics have been plugged in and no fault codes. The engine starts with quick start but runs really rough and cuts out. I have now went injectors off to be tested because there is a possibility they are no good but I am doubtful that they are the cause of the engine not starting. Contacted Charles Trent who say only the block and head are covered by the warranty and basically send it back if I’m unhappy but on top of the 1200 I have spent 1000 in labour and parts so I don’t want it taken back out. If anyone could help or have any suggestions I would be so grateful as I’m losing My mind and my bank balance is dwindling rapidly.

Today I hired a car from Thrifty. I got a good deal £30 quid for a Ford Focus or similar. There was an option to upgrade to VW golf or similar. My wife has a 14 reg focus so I know what they are like. I will need a new car in the foreseeable future so thought to try a Golf for the day on my business trip.

I was presented with a C4 Cactus. This was OK if a little underpowererd. The seat was quite high also. Seemed good over speedbumps, but not in same league as Focus on country roads... Read more

I was lucky enough to get a VW Golf when on holiday. I am struggling to understand the hype surrounding the VW Golf. It is n't a great car, but neither is it a terrible car.
