So iv noticed a knocking noise when I turn left or right or hit minor bumps in the road I was sure it was the exhaust loose which I put a clamp on, then when it still made the noise I welded it so I'm pretty sure its not loose exhaust any ideas guys? Read more

At a guess a worn bush or shock absorber.

Sorry - yes, I did mean the Octavia / Superb.

Depending ion what you need to carry, a slight angle may not be the end of the world - perhaps less of a hassle than having to lift up the cushions and lower the backrests separately.

Been making a noise for months. Last week started getting message "Transmission function limited". today it seemed to not change gear.

By using the manual setting worked out that only gears 1,3, and 5 are working.... Read more

With 1,3 & 5 only working it sounds like a clutch pack has failed. vidmate

I have recently passed my test (automatic) and I'm looking for my first car... I have found two that I am considering but need some advise please as this is all new to me. I would be using the car mainly at weekends and then for longer drives from London to Dorset 3/4 times a year, I don't want to spend too much money on a first car and would probably look to get a new one in a couple of years.

It's between the two below;... Read more

Yes the Multi Mode Transmission (MMT) was introduced from May 2003. However, before the MMT, Toyota's Freetronic was also used - as mentioned in HJ's model history for the Yaris.

As far as i can find out, the Free-Tronic gearbox was not very common (in this country), only available on the 1.0, and it uses what appears to be the gear lever from a manual car.

Long story short the car was up on bricks for a while and now need to move on. Garage says they'll buy it if I get it there. I rang DVLA who say that if it is booked in fir a MOT on that day then I can legally travel to the MOT centre, 'popping into the garage' along the way there or back.

I'm not sure about it. If I get fines or points in the post how responsive would they be to me sending through the proof of MOT appointment. Plus the garage is a few hundred miles from my home. It will be a trade in. Thinking of booking a mot centre close to the garage.... Read more

Just want to say thanks, largely due to your responses decided not to do it. Will try shiply. Just always a problem when you bring somehing to a garage and they know you're out of options so can take the p with the price they'll give you.

At 28 I am finally learning to drive and look to be passed in the next month. After many weeks/months of looking around, I am still undecided about which car I should go for.

I am looking for a reliable, petrol, semi-practical and fun car to drive, with a budget upto £4000. To this end I am more inclined to go for a Hatchback (although this isn't set in stone).... Read more

I think you'd struggle to sleep in the back of a Civic unless you are pretty short!. As volumous as it is, it just doesn't have the length. I guess you could get a roof tent?.

SLO suggested the Focus, this was available as a mechanically identical estate and handles pretty well too. That would be a better bet if you wanted to sleep in the back though i think you'd still struggle if above average height. Here is a 2009 1.8 Zetec on Autotrader to give you an idea,...

I’ve just come back from a few days in Amsterdam, the first thing you notice is how many cars are hybrids, then how many Tesla’s but the big thing and considering how recently they’ve been launched is how many Jaguar I-Paces are on the road. They are big but the more I saw the better they looked. Justified car of the year? Read more

Interesting video. If this is the electric future and we start to get more variety and smaller premium vehicles it’s starting to look more promising.

Twenty two year old looking for an upgrade from my 1.2L 2009 Ford Fiesta. The fiesta has served me wellbut looking for something a bit quicker and fun to drive whilst being reliable for my duly commute to work (40 miles round trip). I’ve got a budget of 10k and looking for something that’s quick but nothing too fast due to my age and insurance costs, (anything between 6.5-8seconds would be superb). As my fiesta has had no problems so far, don’t really want to be upgrading to something that is unreliable as I will be doing 10-15k a year with it. Preferably manual gearbox, and not too fussed about petrol or diesel. Looking to buy used, as not really sure about how PCP Or lease deals really work! Any help or guidance appreciated. Read more

A former colleague of mine (around the same age) had a similar 'itch' to get rid of his (older) 1.4 Fiesta (90hp) because he wanted something 'faster' but better on mpg. I actually found out why he was getting bad mpg - he was gunning it at 90mph down the A1 to work.

Needless to say, a short time later he drove into the back of a van coming out of our company car park, wrote his car off (not broke, just too expensive to fix, given it was over 10yo) and 'upgraded' with his insurance money to a Megane (I think) TD for about £6k - £7k. Of course, that means he spent several thousand buying it and subsequently will have to endure a big bump in his annual premiums, all because he wanted to drive a lot faster and didn't pay attention....

Hi does anyone know when you put a private plate on a car does the tax automatically continue? Do the DVLA swap it over automatically ? I currently pay by DD monthly
Thanks Read more

RT

The VED changes automatically - in the olden days you handed in the old windscreen disk and were issued a new one.

Can anyone point me to a site that gives the above info for most makes & models.

“Thanks. Funny how the more time and trouble I took to understand physics and learn about car mechanics the luckier I seemed to get.”

I’ve seen loads of cases where luck has gone the other direction John including plenty of people who refused to believe that rubber belts deteriorate and need changing eventually. It’s still one of the biggest killers of cars today and a quick visit to any scrap yard will reveal plenty of motors that’ve landed prematurely in there thanks to an ignored belt change.
