S40 Man

Today I hired a car from Thrifty. I got a good deal £30 quid for a Ford Focus or similar. There was an option to upgrade to VW golf or similar. My wife has a 14 reg focus so I know what they are like. I will need a new car in the foreseeable future so thought to try a Golf for the day on my business trip.

I was presented with a C4 Cactus. This was OK if a little underpowererd. The seat was quite high also. Seemed good over speedbumps, but not in same league as Focus on country roads... Read more

Warning

I was lucky enough to get a VW Golf when on holiday. I am struggling to understand the hype surrounding the VW Golf. It is n't a great car, but neither is it a terrible car.

Hello, I am new of this forum, about my new kettle, here is what happen my previous old Russell Hobbs look like a 1960s old retro red one, I had it for 2 years till the plastic got cracked, so I bought other one exactly the same! from Curry.
Arrived at home from the bus I went straight away boiling my first tea the fuse it just blew before the water was about getting hot. I took the plug apart and replace a fuse is 5amps, try it again and blew again I thought oh yeah it is a fault so I went back to the Curry later in the afternoon to replace it. I went back home again and plug in, the fuse blew again unbelievable, I was wonder if the old must be different the new I went compare it I just found the current of amps on my old is 13amps but the new have is rate of 5 amps???? both have same power current watts of 2300w. My friend is good maths work out the current for use the correct fuse amps here is 2300w/240v= 9.58x1.25= 11.9amps so the fuse on the new kettle is too low 5amps that is what it cause the blew.
Now I can't return it again because the seller of Curry said this is normal to have 5amps than the 13amps he said it must be my house have something wrong with wiring! I do not know if this has been in recall before I would assure people have same problem?

I have felt that I have waste £26 for a kettle that I can’t return it would it be safe if I install 13amps???? I think it mind not be a wise to try. any other way of get it back? replace different one or get refund?

Ohms law. Essentially it can be expressed as p=iv p is known 2400watts v is known 240v therefore I has to be 10amps. Therefore a 5 amp fuse is incorrect. Totally proper to use the next size up which is 13a. I've rounded up the maths a bit but it's still way more than 5amps. I'm not a sparky but I know physics and I can do maths. In reality being Ac it'll be a tad less but way more than 5 amps.

Hello,
Just after a bit of advice. I have a 2006 petrol zafira. It’s engine management light has come on after filling up and driving away so I took it for a diagnostic they told me it had 12 error codes so they reset it and said come back when the light comes back on. Which it did about an hour later so they tested it again and same 12 error codes they then said because there is so many I need to take it to a Vauxhall garage to be looked at and they won’t touch it.

Besides a bit of a judder in 1st gear sometimes when pulling away it drives fine, I’m only using it when I have to and it’s booked in to be investigated by Vauxhall next Monday. I’ve only had it since October and only had to replace an abs sensor so far it’s mot is due end of the month too.

I’ve done a pedal test and got the codes

013007
013500
014100
040062
044306
111206
111606
000000

does anyone have any advice or reassurance before Vauxhall look I over and tell me it’s gona cost me thousands when it’s not worth that much and I need it ??

“I should add that you are probably far better than me at choosing a good old car, as are many other people here I bet.”

There’s comfort and security factor that comes from having a new car too which counts for a lot. I’m confident buying older cars but you can get caught out. You’ve bought the new car I would’ve to do the same duty, that or one of its (usually) cheaper triplets. Be interesting to see how it serves over such a heavy mileage.

After a long time motoring I got to thinking which make has given the best service. I've had Fiats, Vauxhalls, Mercs, Volvos, Datsuns, and for me the Volvo estates have been the workhorses which have eaten the miles and carried the dogs and children and all with little problem. Read more

I think Stevie B means Big John rather than John F - but the fact that both Johns clearly look after their cars is the main reason for their long and continuing service.

Bit more online research on this suggests that diesel spec oils with high TBN (Total Base Number) can give high wear in the piston ring-cylinder interface area in petrol engines due to high levels of sulfated ash.

I'm not sure why diesel engines are not so badly affected by this. Could be a combination of lower revs and more lubricious fuel I suppose. Perhaps also the soot produced by a diesel is less abrasive than the ash so partially protects the surfaces.....
