Been using winter tyres every year since 2010 and have always informed our insurer (Aviva) of my intention to use them and give them details despite the ABI document that states you are free to go ahead and use them with no requirement to inform them. Done this because its been pretty much the norm to use a smaller rim and in some cases a steel one and either could be said to be a modification. Aviva have always said OK (once they did ask more questions but when they realised steel wheels are cheaper than alloys they said OK).

So last week I rang them to say the wheels would be going on the Fabia for the first time some time in November until late March or early April. Explained they were steel rims with the correct tyre size for those rims on a Fabia. Chap checked with their underwriter (this has happened before) and all was OK, no extra to pay.... Read more

>>Are they really that weak that the wrong tyres will break the diff?

Subarus are permanent 4 wheel drive needs tyres on front & back to be the same - if there is a discrepancy between the front & back the diff will suffer....

I have the usual Petrol Filler Rust Problem on my Ka, and took some sandpaper to it this morning to clean it up. However, I've found the rust is worse than I thought with some holes around the filler, so I need to take the whole thing out.

In theory I just need to undo one Philips screw and twist and pull out the fitting, but the screw won't budge at all. I've used 3-in-1 easing oil, left it to work, and tried both a superb quality screwdriver that has worked on every other screw it's been challenged with, and an electric screwdriver that I can get my whole weight behind. It doesn't move at all and I can't persist in trying without risking chewing the head up.... Read more

Impact driver?

Hi all, I was originally going to go in summer but due to personal reasons as well as work etc couldn't, however we are finally embarking on our French driving adventure! I've familiarised myself with everything I'll need because I was quite rightly told to have a look at their driving laws which slightly differ to here in the UK.

Since this will be my first time driving in France I was wondering if anyone know s of anywhere which sells everything required for driving over there? I know of a few places but I was just wondering if there's anywhere which sells it all so I can save money on shipping. Also preferably looking at websites which aren't too expensive ... Read more

Yes, the Critair sticker can be stuck on the nearside of rhd vehicles, I checked that on their English help pages. And make sure your V5c scan is done at the lowest quality and in black and white. Otherwise it will be too large for their site to accept .I learned the hard way.

There's a quarter page ad on the back page of the DT today from convoyplates.com. This is for private motorists (the ad features Minis) to be able to identify yourselves as a convoy.

Their website says ".. plates are a clear signal to other drivers that your group is driving together, encouraging them to exercise patience and allow you to stick together". An acccompanying video shows an obliging driver letting a "convoy" exit from a side street onto a main road.

Civilian convoys are illegal in many countries but not, I believe, UK. It can be dangerous e.g. encouraging tail enders to jump lights to keep up and leading cars to pay too much attention to the following group at the expense of watching the road ahead. The only legit civilian convoy I can envisage is a cortege which surely anyone with decency would make allowances for anyway.

What really gets me about this product is the sense of entitlement that others should make way for their selfish behaviour! Oh (pedant alert) and the fact that their website confuses "less" and "fewer".

Lets hope this doesn't catch on. Read more

Anecdote about a hea*** driver from many years ago. A traffic cop (remember those?) stopped one of two hea***s racing along the M4 at over 100 mph. The other car briefly got away - consecutive personal plates and a somewhat distinctive re-styled, bloated Volvo in a rather fetching two tone grey rather gave the game away...) After the usual "'Ello, ello ello" and "Are you the owner of this vehicle, Sir?" came the somewhat unexpected classic one-liners from the jaded B-i-B to the errant motorist:
"Going at a fair old lick back there, weren't we, Sir? BUSINESS A LITTLE SLACK TODAY, IS IT?"

Yes but will they fix the potholes properly, not if my road is anything to go by. There should be a national standard of repair insisted on. Read more

I would like to get rid of the initial "slight hesitation" when moving away from stand still. I know they all do this and I have got used to giving it a few extra revs. Now the car is out of warranty, If I can find a reputable company and my insurance company are ok about it then I may well take the plunge.

This car is tax free and my 107 is £20 per year. The 107 does not have this slight hesitation which I assume is the side effect of tuning for extreme economy.... Read more

My son has a Hyundai i30 diesel, 2010 vintage, 75k miles, had it for 18 months and done 30k miles in 18 months.
He had a new clutch fitted about 4 months ago.
Suddenly about 2 months ago, the. Car has started kangerooing only when the engine is cold and only when he has changed up fron 1st to 2nd gear.
He lives a distance from me, I drove the car briefly today and it kangerooing with me driving only once fron cold and when changing up fron 1st to 2nd gear.
I have looked at other posts on this subject and at a loss what to advise as it only happens in 2nd gear with a cold engine. Read more

normal suspect would be the Coolant Temperature Sensor.

My 2005 Ford focus mk2 failed it's MOT on the engine management light coming on. Engine management light was on when I got it and had been on for several years before with it lavishly just being an advisory but it obviously failed this time due to the MOT changes in March which I hadn't previously known about. I cleared the code before taking it for the MOT but didn't realise it was coming back on after the third engine restart so it came back on during the MOT.

The errors it's throwing are P0036, P0136, P0056 and P0156. All related to O2 sensor. I've thought about getting the sensor changed or trying to do it myself but been put off by the cost of having it done and inconvenience of doing it myself and the fact that since the emissions have always been fine it wasn't especially urgent.... Do you have a laptop? I would invest in an ELM.0127 FORSCAN obd cable and software. If you did this you could a reset code errors before MIT visit. You failed also get a better picture of CD what's wrong with a ford specific scanner. FORSCAN is about £17 and very good value I think
