I have no legal knowledge at all, so am looking at this with simple common sense.

Try putting yourself in the position of the parking mob or their supposed solicitors, would you want to risk the costs of going to court against someone who has the parking ticket backed by official bank/card statement to prove the parking was paid for?, because if i was them i'd be expecting a right rocket off the judge for wasting theirs the courts and everyone's time....

I usually get a 6 month oil change at National Auto due to doing fairly high mileage but not enough to warrant an interim service at my local garage.

They used to use Fuchs Titan oil but have switched over to Lukoil, I can't see much reference to it anywhere. ... Read more

If you google it you will find that they make a wide range of synthetic and non- synthetic oils that seem to meet various standards.

Every week, without fail, we read of horror stories of VW and Audi cars yet the general public still believe in all the rubbish about German car reliability and quality. When will we Brits ever learn?
Incidentally we hardly hear of these stories from Skoda or Seat owners, even though the cars are virtually identical except for the styling. Audi's are even made in Skoda factories. Is it because they are truly better than VW and Audi cars, or is it because the owners are so ashamed that they do not want to publicise their car problems?
My worst ever car was a Passat which nearly killed me when the fuel shutoff valve failed on the motorway and which spend half it's life in the VW garage. I went to Honda and Toyota since then and 20 years later had never experienced a problem except having to replace a air conditioning high pressure pipe! My current Toyota Avensis is 11 years old and 135,000 miles on the clock, gives me 55 mpg and still on original battery, clutch and exhaust. Never missed a beat and still runs like new.

'Paintful decision'

That is one of the risks when buying a second hand car.

The paintwork warranty and the corrosion warranty can be invalidated if the inspections haven't been done on time or if the repairs haven't been done on time or to the manufacturer's specified standards.

Hi All, having some issues with my ford fiesta, it's a 1.3L 2002 plate, been told today the engine is possibly the same as they put into the Ford KA.

When the clutch is down/idle the revs will increase to 2500 RPM and drop to 1500 RPM without me pressing anything and this is a continuous cycle so sounds like i want to race the person next to me which clearly isn't the case.

Wondered if this is a common issue / If there are any known fixes?? possible Idle control valve issue??

All feedback is greatly appreciated!! Read more

I have had a weird problem since the heatwave began (may or may not be related) and now my Ranger won't start at all.

First time I had a problem, 4 weeks ago, I left the rager parked in very hot sun, went to start it (it has a key + push button start) and the first thing I noticed was that the glow plug light, which usually lights up for a few seconds, did not come on - I thought this was down to the heat and tried to start it, It turned over fine, but would not start. I suspected it was related to the hot weather, so I waited for the sun to go down and - hey presto, it worked, the glow plug light came on and I started it fine. ... Read more

A friend has gone over the electrics and can't find an obvious fault, but he has cleaned up all connections and earth and so far, no repeat of the problem though I''m not optimistic is won't happen again. Not sure how to diagnose if it does. apkjunky

I am on my fourth car in 30 years ! I keep them until they break, I service them myself. I now need another car as current one is well past it. I am thinking of an Auris Hybrid from 2013-. I have looked on the internet but can find no information about how much servicing I can do myself. I know its complicated new tech but can I still do the following jobs myself?

1. change engine oil and filter... Read more

“I have always contended that with modern sealed systems it is best left alone. The average age of our cars is 22, one is 38, none get their coolant changed. I have argued why elsewhere.” Not really wishing to get into the usual disagreement with you John but while I can understand your thinking with an older more straightforward vehicles but modern ABS equipped cars don’t take kindly to moisture buildup in brake fluid which can damage the abs pump, other components and even on older cars it will eventually effect braking efficiency. Same story as last time regarding t/belts. These frequently fail even with today’s improved materials and it is simply not possible to fully inspect a belt in situ. Last one I removed from a car was a 2008 Astra with less than 40,000 miles up and while it was in place it looked fine yet once off and flexed it showed severe wear with loads of cracks and deterioration. Left on it would’ve failed fairly soon. Though I will agree that manufacturers do err on the side of caution regarding intervals and most failures are due to other components such as tensioners, water pumps and pulleys failing and throwing the belt. It’s not worth the risk with a valuable car but with an old junker it’s understandable and you can stretch its life with regular underbonnet checks for signs of the above components failing. I’ll back you on the air filter though, I’ve often just given it a blast from an airline to clean it but when a replacement is so cheap it’s really saving peanuts. Hybrid models have energy harvesting systems via the braking system so no I don’t think it would be as simple as changing pads and discs on a normal car. Home maintenance will become a thing of the past with the more complex and advanced cars of today and tomorrow. Joe Public just isn’t geared up or knowledgable enough to do it. Though no doubt there will be a few cases of death via electric shocks from electric and hybrid power packs with some who refuse to accept that the days of servicing your old pinto engined Cortina on ramps up your driveway are long gone.

I agree with you about the energy regeneration systems affecting a simple job such has brake servicing and home mechanics is increasingy rare.

Looking at the above vehicle and wondering the pros/cons. Read some things about the mpg of 160mph is totally unrealistic which I can fully understand. Also the fact that is is not that economical over longer distances and the obvious high list price. I do a mix of short commute and long trips. Although I would not buy one that is brand new. Any advice welcome Read more
