After a really heavy hailstorm, my sons girlfriends 66 plate i10 has a few little dents in the roof, obviously it doesn’t affect the driving of the car but it would be best if she had it repaired, can this be repaired using smart repairs, or would it be better for her to visit a body shop. Is this likely to be really expensive to fix, and require her to go through her insurance, I know no one can give exact costs but an idea of how much it is likely to be would be a start.. Read more

<< Other problem was local bodyshops were inundated with similar repairs as most of the local dealers had stock badly damaged too. >>

That's an important point - a hailstorm can cover a wide area ....

I recently purchased a 2015 Nissan qashqai and I knew it didn't come with a spare wheel I knew one could be purchased for it. The dealer wanted £350 For the wheel tyre and Jack ect. After browsing eBay I have just purchased a supposedly genuine brand new wheel tyre ect for £125.

I'd rather be able to put on a space saver and have to put some luggage in the passenger compartment than have to use the gunk or wait for the RAC and pay extortionate prices to a tyre fitter in the middle of the night.

Progress that is, improving your driving for smoother, not slower progress, leading to quite large improvements in fuel usage.

I reckon it takes me about 4/5 months before i can get the best from a new to me vehicle, though i don't think you ever stop learning.... Read more

Well said, Andrew - there isn't.

Thread closed, as it has descended into insults.

Land Rovers have a system to do remote control over some functions. When they are sold secondhand the dealer is supposed to disconnect this so that the previous owner no longer has this control. Needless to say it doesn't get done.

I wonder what's involved in linking a car? Could I hire LR products and gradually build up a set of them in my app and create merry hell for the hire company?

Of course, if I did that it could be traced back to the phone used, I guess.

Old Passat B5.5 climatronic oscilates between hot and cold air at the vents. It usually works for a little while, then alternates between blowing hot and cold. You can hear the blend motor whirring away in the footwell as the temperature changes.

Why don't manufacturers fit an air tank (Like those found on HGVs for the brakes - standard industry tech) and use the 'wasted' compression strokes as a brake to fill the tank, and use the compressed air like a small battery for stop-start traffic?

The engine could still run and power A.C. etc etc that way, with nothing but air out the exhaust.... Read more

You use an air or nitrogen loaded accumulator. We use them extensively on Warships to provide a back up in case of hydraulic plant failure. A bladder in the accumulator is pressurised with high pressure gas. The hydraulic fluid on the other side of the bladder compresses the bladder so providing a reserve of oil at high pressure if required. However, due to the pressures involved, the accumulators are by necessity very heavy.

The twin fans behind the radiator are not working. As a first step I would like to check the fuse. It is F2 (under bonnet) and 60 amp rating but I cannot remove it. Is there a technique I should be using, please? Read more

Thanks for coming back to convey the outcome, Cicero - an all too infrequent courtesy. Much appreciated. Hope the overheating wasn't serious enough to wreck a CHG. Might just need a £40 re-gas? That's all our 2000 Focus needed.

I've got a 1ltr petrol engine with a 14 plate - I've had the car 8 months and it's been drinking oil since Christmas. Definitely using the right kind as I took it to the garage to confirm. Using about2ltrs every 4-6 weeks but no leakage or burning from the exhaust.

Just got it back from the Peugeot garage where they stripped it back for me to investigate - I've been told that the pistons and valves were caked in oil and that my choice is either get the engine reconditioned (they quoted £1250 with no guarantee of solving the problem) or getting a new engine (they quoted £3000).... Thanks for the quick reply! It's got 48000 miles on it and I'm getting about 1200 - 1500 miles out of the oil.

Might be a silly question but if it was a blocked breather pipe, would the garage have checked that when they stripped back the head? Starting to feel like I've been conned out of £300 for them to tell me something I already knew about my car drinking oil.
