'The Government has cast doubt on the future of the Plug-in Grant by indicating that it could be reduced from October 2018 and ended altogether by 2020. The announcement was made by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling as part of the Road to Zero strategy'

So the road to zero actually means zero help. However we do need to reflect the true costs of EV's because if they really do take off in popularity no government could afford a £5k subsidy on each.

Hopefully the economies of scale will bring EV's prices down to an affordable level for the masses. Read more

You can't have it both ways Ian, if they're impractical and a long way off then there's no need to worry about the lost tax revenue! Serioulsy, I agree they'll be a tipping point where EVs will need to be taxed per mile driven via (best guess) some sort of in-car transponder. I think subsidies are a good idea especially as the environment benefits of EVs affect us all

Hi everyone.

I have a Hyundai i20 (2015), I really love it. I bought it used from Saltmarine in Northern Ireland last year, it only had 17000 miles on it and was immaculate. I look after it really well, after having a runabout for years. ... Read more

I've found Saltmarine to be much more approachable. I would be confident going in by myself to the showroom to look at cars; I wouldn't do that at Daly's. Michael Salt sold me my i20 and was extremely helpful and truthful about the cars I looked at, at no point was he pushy. I'm keeping Rankin Cook bookmarked, as it's very close to me, incase of future bumps! Many thanks for the recommendation.

My 2001 Mini (that I've owned since the launch date) has 65000 miles and is well loved. The car has developed a loud squeal from the engine area at 1000 rpm. I thought it may the V-belt so ordered a new one and replaced it. No difference. Thinking it may come from the A/C compressor, I removed the belt and ran the engine briefly. The squeal appeared at 1000 rpm as before so I know it's not the belt or anything driven from it. I'm stumped as to where to go from here.

Any RPM above 1000 and everything is quiet. ... Read more

Well it's fixed and I've proved once again that a key skill in life is knowing what to fix.

It was the exhaust heat shield rubbing on the central exhaust support. One of the heat shield fixing nuts had come off and the shield had moved close enough to the support rod to touch it. I guess there is a resonant point at 1000 rpm where the exhaust vibrates a bit. One bolt and washer and quiet reigns. It sounded for all the world like it was something horrible in the engine....

Hi All,

Just after some friendly advice - I bought a 2008 Ford Focus Estate 1.8 Diesel on the 23rd June 2018. It was from a local garage. It had about 77k on it and I have since put roughly 400-500 miles on it.... Read more

Citizens advice can be OK but in many cases they are useless. Manned mostly by volunteers the advice is only as good as the person you speak to.

I am both an employee of and volunteer at Citizens Advcie. I've now read this several times and bitten my lip. I can do so no longer. ...

Hi all, hope you don't mind a newbie coming in asking questions! I will come back with thanks/answers to any follow-ups :-)

After hanging onto my last car for ages I'm now looking to buy a Mazda 3 Sport and have found a tasty looking one for sale at a reputable franchise dealer, with number plate SR11GYS. This checks out on the DVLA vehicle check, MOT history and an HPI check: all match the actual car details as seen in the advert photos etc.... Read more

Just as a footnote to this I've just had a reply from Experian (who I assumed might be supplying the data to insurers, tyre companies etc.)

They claim their data for the car detailed in my first post matches the (correct) DVLA data....

I have an elderly Fiesta as my run about in the south of France - I'm sure mechanically it's pretty much the same as UK models.

This week I gave it a bit more of a challenge than its usual trips to airport/beach/supermarket by taking it up some long steep climbs on roads in the southern Alps. It performed fine but at one viewpoint stop I noticed a sizzling noise coming from the bonnet and on investigation the coolant was actually simmering and a bit of pressure released from the cap - though the coolant level hadn't noticeably dropped. I let it cool and continued, and on other steep climbs it happened again.... Read more

First question I like to ask ,Is your car fitted with air-conditioning, and if so does it work? Hissing through the coolant cap may mean the system is not pressurising adequately ,due to faulty cap/seal.
