Increase the duty on petrol and reduce it on diesel. It is essential to keep the price of diesel as low as possible as transport costs affect the price of the everyday goods that we buy. Many lower mileage drivers have switched to petrol cars now anyway. Read more

With major oil shortages due to affect all of us from 2020 onwards (due to the relative low price of oil affecting investment) the dynamics of car ownership are going to change anyway.

I see far more car shares and people using apps to either offer long distance lifts or to find them (no profit is allowed as then cars would count as a taxi).

As I have been switching more to trains for long distance travel I think I'm going to go electric because most of my journeys during any given week are less than 20 miles.

As long as I can get 120 miles of range (there and back) in all conditions it means I can reach most of my friends.

I doubt the next decade is going to be particularly nice for traditional fuelled cars and many dealerships.

One report estimated that as many as half the UK's car dealerships could close in the next 10 years.

Big changes are coming and any price rises due to tax are going to be pretty insignificant by comparison.

By the way - the big hope of fracking in the US is one big scam - these companies have mainly negative cash flows serviced by huge debt issuances which they can never repay.

Utterly disgusting!
If there has been a serious accident or a driver with a dash cam suffers damage to their vehicle, then fair enough. BUT, "....any other road traffic offence"?
Jesus! What sort of society do we want to live in?
I'd suggest forwarding footage of the myriad of police vehicles that one sees with defective lights, or exceeding the speed limit without good reason. Let's see how far the police interest goes, without media coverage, of those "...road traffic offences".
Makes one "proud to be British"!
Anyone involved in this poison should hang their heads in shame, including Duncan Dollimore, (who should concentrate on cycling proficiency), Heather Yates, (who should spend some time with Orwell), and Nextbase themselves.

I've taken points because of an error with the camera. I can't be the only one. If we use a flawed system the authorities can't expect drivers to play by the rules. Read more

Statistics can be used to prove total rubbish. How many drivers are there on the roads? Millions. How many cases of speeding are registered each year, lots. But surely not one in five of the millions of drivers. How many drivers did the survey cover? Were they all insured with the Co-op?

Hello,

As you can see from the title, I own a 2005 1.3 Ford KA Style. I've noticed over the par few days that my car has been making an AWFUL creaking noise going up and down hill. I'll be the first one to admit that I know nothing about cars - my boyfriend and his dad help me out. This is the first car that I've owned and have had it for eight months. It's due it's first MOT with me in September. Anyway, the guy I bought it off gave me his MOT sheet and the advisories were:

Trailing arm has slight play in pin/bush Nearside Rear and
Trailing arm has slight play in pin/bush Offside Rear

Does this sound like something that could make this awful creaking noise going up/down hill? My boyfriend and his dad are away until Saturday and will be looking at it when they come back. Is this something that can be replaced without going to a mechanic? What kind of price am I looking at for the parts? My car is now valued at £290 so I need to weigh up if it'll be worth it to repair these issues. As mentioned, I'm useless when it comes to this kind of thing so any information and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Read more

The bushes mentioned should be quite easy to change and worth doing anyway. Never worked on a Ka but have changed on other makes and always been a straight forward job. If they are worn then could quite well cause noise. Never tried it but I know of some people who spray them with silicone spray or WD 40 to make them quiet for a short time.

It would be worth investing in a workshop manual to give more detail on what is required. You can get online ones for peanuts or maybe £20 if you like books. Just looked up Euro car parts and new bushes are £20.99...

Hi, I had driven for about 15 mins and parked the car for 30 mins, when I started it, it stalled and then wouldn't start. The engine was making a whirring noise for about 5 mins and I could smell burning from under the bonnet, probably the drivers side. The engine was making a clicking noise then nothing. I've been towed to a garage to see what's wrong with it. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas? Thanks. Read more

It will be worth checking the ignition switch/lock function, is it keeping the starter motor engaged when the engine is running. This is a common fault on the cars I work with and no matter how many starters you put on they will keep burning out. Get it checked before driving it again.

Thanks, would that smell all the time though? It's strange that when I'm driving and I have all the air vents open so I can smell anything, there's nothing. It's just when it's turned off and parked, that's why I thought it was a new part smell but I don't really know anything about it and it does seem to be wearing off now....

Wouldnt surprise me. If you take the 'right' car to them they can be surprisingly competitive. eg. £2600 for my mother-in-laws 2007 Honda Jazz SE auto - with a dink on every panel, a smell of damp in the boot and a crumpled offside wing, but clear MOT, FHSH and just 38k on the clock.

Also, cars are more reliable than ever, despite some well documented exceptions (looking at you JLR). People arent very well off now - keep the car you've got until it's beyond economic repair. Read more

2006 Civic 1.8 VTEc SE with 66k for £4995

Daughter's well specced 2008 5 door 65k miler , full Honda SH we picked up for £2430 from very good feedback ebay auction trader, though to be fair it had £400 worth of one mature previous owner shopping scrapes and it needed a set of tyres (£240 for good ones), so in theory it cost £3k with a new set of tyres and perfect paint, the bodywork will stay as is, its her work/dog carrier/runabout so it'll gain more scapes in time....

In a bizarre response to the French government introducing a reduced speed limit of 80kph on rural secondary roads, one French department (Hautes-Alpes) has announced that it has increased the speed limit on the majority of its roads that currently have a 70kph limit (even that is frequently excessive on the mountain roads!) and that the limit will now be set at 80kph.

The departmental head announced that the government’s decision to reduce the limit on roads which had hitherto had a 90kph limit “makes no sense”.... Read more

Hi all, I have a 2003 Leon, Petrol 1.6 and it has a strange starting problem, I'd really appreciate some ideas. It's a great little car apart from this problem.

My Leon starts first time every time I take it out for the first time in the day, but, the second journey it always struggles. I am now having to attempt to start it 6, 7, 8 times on the second and subsequent journeys. I fear at some point it just isn't going to get going! I don't want to ditch it, but I do need it to be reliable. It is always on subsequent journeys after having been parked up for 1-3 hours. Can anybody give me any clues?

Thanks in advance,
