I've got a weird problem with my car, its a 1.4 HDi, same engine as the Ford 1.4 TDCi. I changed the air filter on it and upon driving it the EML came on and the further you push the pedal down the more the engine keeps refusing to rev whilst driving. It acts like it's either in limp mode or it's not getting any fuel if you try and accelerate quickly. It'll still do 70 but only if you don't push it, if I come to a hill it's hopeless as it just keeps revving then cutting back then revving some more (the clutch isn't slipping). It's as if it's getting fuel and then suddenly not getting any so cuts out but then gets more fuel and starts revving again.
However, if I put the old air filter back on and floor it, it'll just keep revving and I have no issues whatsoever. The old air filter is BLACK, it's absolutely filthy but it's the only way the car will drive properly. I've plugged it into OBD and it says there's a problem with the MAF circuit (P0100 IIRC) but like I say, put the old filter back in and it all goes away. You can feel that it sucks more air with a clean air filter just by putting a hand in front of the inlet pipe, in fact with the dirty one you can barely feel anything at idle.... Read more
Hello, I hope this is the right section for my query. My daughter had the engine fault light come on ( orange I believe) and a message about using restricted power. She took it to Kwik Fit for £35 engine diagnosis and they told her it was the EGR valve. She came away £36 the poorer with a receipt saying code cleared . They told her the part was £600 (land Rover dealer quoted £228+vat) and recommended she took it somewhere else ! I would have expected some sort of print out, so my question is , has anyone here had any experience of this 'service' She did phone customer service and they had no idea. Many Thanks for taking the time to look. Read more

Not as soon as those trousering massive grants and investments might be insinuating?
Interesting article in Spectator about this subject, i'm a subscriber (its the only media slightly leaning in the direction of mainstream that i bother with), but if i recall correctly you can read the odd article online without the paywall triggering.... Read more
I don't think energy source (electric or oil) is connected to the method of control - they are independant but coincidendentally being developed at the same time
I do expect however that autonomous will be fitted to electic vehicles first if for no other reason than govts around the world are legislating againg ICE. ...

Same car same colour. Photo was just the number plate. Thank goodness mine had the supplying dealers details on it. The cloned one didn't and there was nothing else to differentiate the back of their car and mine. ...
Ref CS with his leaky Audi.
I do not understand why people buy a car from hundreds of miles away from where they live when you get this sort of issue it is hard to sort it. If he had brought it from his local Audi dealer I am sure it would have been sorted by now.
I work in a dealer and I see this more and more now if you say you will need to take it back to the dealer you brought it from the respond is it is too far away. Well it wasn't when you brought it was it ! Read more

It is called marketing. An average car previously developed with Chrysler designed and built to be as cheaply made as possible.Volkswagen seem to be going the same way.The 'Legendary' Mercedes quality would apply to a S class of the eighties, before the cost accountants stepped in.

What a great little 4x4, and with suzuki reliability it should give many years trouble free motoring. looks like a mini G Wagon and fantastic in kinetic yellow. The suzuki design team have done wonders on the new design and well priced too. Read that availability may be limited as suzuki will struggle to meet orders with only 1 factory in japan producing them, with 1 other factory (unfinished and no tooling yet) But will be ordering 1 as is a great small town vehicle suitable for my roads (potholes and winter snow) I Love it!!!
Zero deposit car finance should be banned. It automatically gets people into serious debt due to negative equity because of the depreciation. A 30% minimum part exchange value or cash deposit should be required. PCP is another gimmick. You're only renting the car and paying off the depreciation yet you still have to maintain it, insure it and pay the VED. It's a way for dealers to get customers loyal to the brand. Read more
We live in a nanny state as it is. It should be up to the individual as to what finance deal they choose not the law's.
Hi all, when buying a used car on a tight budget would you go for an older car with lower mileage or a newer car with high mileage?
I've been looking at a 2009 Vauxhall Meriva 1.4 petrol with 88k on the clock. The dealer wants £1,700 for it. The car looks and sounds ok but how many more miles could one reasonably expect a Meriva to do before it starts to fall apart and cost money. Would I be better trying to find an older car with fewer miles on it? Read more
For that sort of budget - buy a Suzuki. They tend to be bought privately (very few Suzukis are hire cars or company cars) by elderly people and therefore get driven gently and serviced properly. Suzukis are basic no-frills cars which are extremely dependable. Hondas and Toyotas are generally the "go to" Jap cars so you'll get less car for your money. Swifts can be owned by young boy racers (wannabe MINI owners), so get an SX4 instead - which are just as much fun to drive (pretty much the same car under the skin.) Yes there are more refined and economical cars - but in terms of total cost of ownership the Suzuki will come out on top because, 1) it'll be cheaper to begin with, and 2) It simply won't go wrong.
I'm no mechanic but that does not seem odd to me. An engine which run very low on oil, or out completely, could seize. This in turn could cause an accident. Read more
You get all the professional checks a garage does during a routine 'service' for a fraction of the price.
I thought the MoT test and a 'full service' were rather different things. A service covers mostly the fluids and filters under the bonnet, and condition of brakes. The MoT test examines more things under the car, looks for the progress of wear in moving parts, and only involves the engine to check exhaust emissions. I would hope a conscientious examiner might spot low oil or brake fluid, but I don't think it is part of the test. And the test doesn't allow any 'dismantling'.
Google BSI reset and try that.
Although it is usually good to get a genuine MAF, you can pick aftermarket ones up for a fraction of the price. I did that on my old 306 and it was absolutely fine.
