I've certainly been in aircraft that have been struck by lightning, and come to no harm :-)

So have I, a storm gathered and we was warned of turbulent ride, though after the lightning strike which was just a heavy crack nothing else happened...

I've just changed the coolant on SWMBO Forester (i'd forgotten, its been sitting in the garage for couple of months), unsure how long since it was last done, no signs of deterioration it must be said.

When i unscrewed the radiator drain plug the old coolant ran out quite slowly at first until i gave it blast through via the rad and filler points and back flushed through a heater hose to boot, we have good mains water pressure here and i have a conical nozzle on my trigger sprayer hose which means a near enough watertight seal to blow mains water through the system.... "I will go back tomorrow to get a technical explanation then let you know."

I have been waiting all day to hear this technical explanation. (I am very glad to hear that James never gets conned as he is too switched on - nice to know.) Please, please come back and enlighten us....

Are you saying the car has NO service history ?

The Mk 2 Fabia was stopped on 2015, so that means the car is 3 years old at a minimum....

The plastic grille around my cars foglight had some play as some of the mounting clips, which are part of the grille itself, had failed after hitting a pheasant. It costs upwards of £65 for a new part.

Looking at it I thought that a piece of double-sided tape might hold it firm but its a very neat fit and the usual bulky tape for number plates would show too much. Rummaging online I found a black PE tape, 9mm wide and only 1mm thick by Sanojtape. Its watertight and good up to 80 degrees C. Its made a pretty much invisible repair. Its early days but its survived the heatwave and a motorway dash so far.

Needless to say I've no connection with the company.

It got me thinking about other hacks and tips other backroomers might have to avoid awkward or expensive repairs.........a hundred uses for cable ties perhaps?

When the front of my 207SW was put together 18 months ago after a minor bump, the repairer saved the cost of a new headlamp unit (more than your £65 I guess) by reattaching the lugs which had snapped off. I think it was some kind of quick-setting resin. Superglue might be enough, and probably longer-lasting than ducktape or other sticky stuff which comes unstuck with heat.

Has anyone experienced travel on one of these? The minute I spot a "buses replacing trains" notification of any kind -I steer well clear... Read more

That's a popular area for the Rail Replacement service - but sometimes it doesn't operate as expected. If the Rail Replacement is for the GWR service then there are usually coaches at North Camp towards Guildford or Reading. It's typically double-deckers buses on the SWR service

Sometimes, though the replacement is for South Western Railways (was SW Trains) for the Southampton or Farnham/Lines. Is this what you were expecteding in your example? It's not often that both lines are out at the same time and so rail replacements might run from Farnborough (Main) to Ash Vale and beyond. (Ash Vale passengers would not normally go through Farnborough Main - it's on the Basingstoke/Southampton service)...

The thread on wipers reminded me that my windscreen (oruginal i30 screen, 9 years old, 60 K miles, mosty under motorway speeds, shows hundreds of tiny pits when the low sun shines through it.

Puzzled how its picked up so many pinprick pits, (no chips or cracks), I asked my mate who runs a body shop about replacing it, but his advice was to leave it as is because in his experience not all screen replacements are done with enough care and can lead to problems. (understandable with bonded screens).... Read more

I've got a stone chip on the windscreen ... right in front of the driver, low down slightly above where the wipers park but below my normal line of sight. Last week I called the insurer's repairer, they refused to repair and want to replace. Car is 11 months old, MOT not going to happen for another 2 years, I see no reason why I need to proceed with a replacement now, there is always the chance of further stone chips in the future, don't want to pay £75 twice. (The chip occured a few months ago, it is stable, not changing in size, if it was then my opinion about replacement would be different).

About 10 years ago the windscreen for my (previous) car was vandalised and had to be replaced. Unfortunately the rear view mirrow was misplaced and I had to call the repair people back as I could not adjust the rear view mirror correctly and about a quarter of the rear window was not in view! ...

Just a reminder that the speed limit on two-way roads without a central divider is reduced from 90 kph to 80 kph unless another posted limit applies.

Also be aware that as a lot of communes have not changed the signage yet, and some do not intend to, any 90 kph limit you see should be read as 80 kph.... Read more

I wasn't aware of this. Is it permanent or temporary?

The 80kph limit on secondary roads in France is officially “on trial” for the next two years, to see if it makes any difference....
