I have a 2008 Vauxhall vivaro and am looking at a complete engine swap. With a second-hand engine.
Will the replacement engine need 'coding' to the van??... Read more
I know many people do not like this engine, but I'm seeking an objective answer, please:
My car has had good quality oil and filter changes every 11k miles or so, but in just the past few weeks I can hear the timing chain rattle when it is idling. It's a periodic thing - sounds like 1, 2, 3, pause, 1, 2, 3, pause, 1, 2, 3... Does that sound familiar?... Read more
Most BMC 'A' engines were in the scrapyard by about 60k miles, much more than that and they started wearing through the timing cover so yours is doing very well.
Hey all,
First time poster, a question I posed to HJ but which I hope someone here may also be able to answer.... Read more
The fuel used throughout has been esso and always from a busy station on a main road. I stuck with esso after much experimenting with my Mk6 escort 1.6S manual. Shell optimax was the favourite amongst the track day crowd and I used it for several yearly periods on the escort but the data is inconclusive. For the Astra I decided to stick to one petrol supplier for the long term. Regarding additives I have tried redex and millers adding the recommended amount at each tankfull of 95 for one year each. There was no change in mpg for either but millers does seem to make the engine run very slightly smoother but not as smooth as when running on 97. I have used additives on previous old bangers with success. My conclusion is that if you buy a car new and run it in correctly then change the oil annually and give it a motorway blast once a week you are unlikely to get the gum buildup that additves are designed to remove. I would recommend 97 for someone pottering around town and for the enthusiast if he can feel the difference.
My thoughts as well - other than a small increase in mpg for petrol-engined cars (that have a knock sensor) and a perhaps slight improvemence in the smoothness of the engine performance (both petrol and diesel, including the removal [to a degree] of power curve flat spots), nothing should change as these superfuels are designed to clean engines clogged up with gunk; normal grade fuels, if the car is used sympathetically (i.e. not on repeated short runs from cold or not well maintained), are more than sufficient for the vast majority of cars save high performance petrol-engined cars that the manufacturers recommend to use superunleaded petrol. Note that 'super' diesel is, if I recall correctly, not a higher cetane rating, but just has more detergents etc in it....
There is a cable connected to the sensor under the diesel system rail- when connected, the car won't start. But when I remove the cable, the car starts up fine, but it's limited to 3000rpm.. Seems like it's going in emergency mode. Thats when the engine light starts. This makes it impossible for me to get my car on the road again, as they won't accept a lit engine lamp.. (Because of the EU-control).
The local Peugeot dealership have tried changing all the diesel filters without being able to find the fault. ... Read more
If its the 8 valve engine you have they very rarely go wrong but I would suggest that the pressure sensor that the wire is connected to is faulty. Have a look on ebay for a secondhand one, you are very unlikely to get a faulty one. I've got one here somewhere.

We've just been informed by our dealer ( car was in for a warranty clutch assembly replacement ) that our Focus 1.6 Ecoboost is being recalled cue to a problem with cooling/coolant levels that could cause the head to crack.
Just posting as a heads up for anyone who has one that hasn't heard. ... Read more
My 2013 fiesta st engine blew a hole in the engine block in May 2017 and I eventually (after 3 months of daily battles with Evans Halshaw Treforest, Ford and Ford Credit) had the engine replaced free of charge. It had full main dealer service history was 3 years and 9 months old and had done 46k miles. Not sure if related to this recall but seems interesting that it's been released now. I now have a 5 year old car with a 1 year old 9k miles engine so despite my reservations about Ford I'll be keeping it for the foreseeable future..
Hi,
I have read several articles about how athermic windscreens stop a phone's GPS working. I use and rely on google maps for satnav ,so this would be a complete no-no for me. I am looking at a car with an athermic windscreen (Alfa Giulia) - can anyone who actually has one of these windscreens put my mind at rest....or otherwise?... Read more
Ok thanks LIam (I guess you spelled your name wrongly!)
To the other reply - no satnav is as good as google maps for traffic reports. on 99% of my journeys I know exactly where I'm going, I just need satnav for live traffic. I've tried lots of built-in, garmin and tomtom and none of them match google maps.
Hi all,
I thought I'd just share my recent experience with you regarding clutch problems with my 2015 Peugeot 308 Allure 1.6 BlueHDI 120. Firstly a bit of info on the car - I purchased it at the end of October from a Peugeot dealer. It had covered 43k and I am the 4th owner. It has full service history however I didn't realise until I collected the car that one if these owners was a car rental company. If I had known this before I agreed the purchase I may have been a little reluctant to buy. It was however, a great price, being pretty much the cheapest BlueHDI 120 Allure in the UK. On the short test run that I gave it, the car drove great, but I'm only talking 5 miles of continuous driving so not an in depth test drive. I was happy to do a deal though. ... Read more
Thank you very much for sharing this.
My car has exactly the same symptom. I took it to Peugeot workshop a few months ago and they said that was nothing to worry about and that it is normal....

Yesterday by following the YouTube videos i opened the driver door side covers and noticed that the wire which goes to motor got the burns. So I recalled a week ago when i was closing the door it was very hard and i think the motor was loaded heavily. Temporarily disconnected that wire and after replacing the new fuse, the central locking started working. I am really excited and happy that i identified the issue, but I have to go to garage to fix the side door motor issue.
Thanks to all for your advice.
Has anyone expereinced a failure of the rear differential in a new/low mileage MX-5 ND Sports? Read more
This particular car was going left under acceleration, the dealer agreed there was something amiss and diagnosed the diff, which was confirmed to be 'broken' and replaced, but the problem remained.
Wrong diagnosis, then. (what was the investigation/observation that 'confirmed' it?)
Poor geometry or suspension failure would surely have been spotted....
I have frequently posted that I would never buy diesel again. I am wondering if, in my usual way, I have taken it to extremes because of my experience with Volvo C30 1.6 diesel.
I do at least one decent 60 mile round trip, Inc dual carriageway, every week and once a month a cross the country journey. Annual mileage on excess of 10000. It's just that with some cars the diesel is recommended. At the moment looking at Hyundai ix20 and i30. Any issues with those diesels. I consider good between gear acceleration an important safety factor.... Read more
Thats interesting. I suppose like everything else it depends on the people involved and generally people seem keener to report negative experiences.
In my own world there have been some poor schools/teachers which didn't mean all schools/teachers were poor.
