I've recently purchased a Q7 3.0 tdi, which promptly broke down on the drive home. After the injectors were replaced and coil pack(s) it seems to run fine. However at about 1800 to 2000 rpm then engine sounds a bit harsh, like a resonance type noise. The car is under load and acceleration at the time. Lifting off the gas stops the noise / feeling and outside of these revs it's all ok. There seems to be no loss of power but it just sounds a bit loud to me. Does anyone have any idea on what this might be. It's most pronounced in 8th gear at about 75 mph ish. The tyres have all been tracked and balanced.

Picking up on HJ reply today, if it were my car with 28k miles and less than 4 years old I would be seriously unhappy faced with a bill of £2114 from Mini dealer. HJ answer whilst describing a possible cause was at best unhelpful. Is there a warning in the vehicle handbook that disparity of tyre tread can cause a costly problem? I would suggest that HJ could have advised the writer to have at least asked the dealer for a contrbution from Mini - part not fit for purpose? This is an expensive car. Failing this take it elsewhere for a more reasonable quote? The reason consumers write to HJ is for advice as they know little about the mechanics and their consumer rights which is reflected through this forum. I appreciate that sometimes the full letter to HJ is sometimes not published in full! Read more
Agree with original poster. However common transfer box problems are, this is a VERY low mileage vehicle. And only just out of warranty. I would be taking MINI to task. Disparity in tread depths or not.
We have two 4wds with automatic engagement. The IX35 has had tyres rotated throughout its life as I swap to winters Nov to March. Despite this, at 4 years old it needed a new propshaft bearing (under warranty). ...
Hi all
I’ve had this car for about a year now, had it serviced & had the cambelt replaced over summer. It is a 2006 Mk6 Ford Fiesta with a 1.25 zetec petrol engine. Since buying the car, I have always noticed a popping noise coming from the exhaust when revving the engine however I had thought nothing of it until now.
The other morning when trying to start the car, it turned over fine and the engine started but immediately afterwards the revs dropped and the car stalled. It kept doing this, so I gave it a bit of throttle and managed to get it idling at the right engine speed. The revs drop dangerously low when stopping at junctions and traffic lights, on the brink of stalling! Also, the average MPG has had a notable drop from 33 to 22 so fuel economy is very poor.
Already tried replacing the battery, no warning lights are shown on the dashboard. Could it be a blown head gasket? I’m led to think because of the popping noises and lack of power.
Thank you in advance Read more
does the exhaust smell of petrol ?
when my inlet manifold gasket went, it did sound like a light "popping" at the back .
and it did stall if revved and left to idle.
A mechanic recommended spraying wd-40 near the inlet and listening for any changes to the revs..

Hi All
Just wondered whether anyone had experience of retro fitting reverse parking sensors. The B Max had them, and to be honest they did come in useful. This version of the Jazz doesn't, and I reckon we might benefit from fitting them, IF it can be done with a minimum of disruption to the car's paintwork.... Read more
I agree with sensors being safer than a camera - nearly reversed into another car the other night because I was concentrating on the camera display rather than the sensors. It was dark, raining and the side of a black car was behind me, so nothing to see on my screen. Luckily stopped in time.
hello, car goes into limp mode after about 10 seconds, can anyone tell me what could be wrong? thanks, mike. Read more
A timing chain issue would be my first thought.
Hi, I have had a vauxhall corsa out on finance now for about 4 months. Since having the car, I have had to get a new tyre, the break pads replaced and now the ECU has gone on the car. The garage who sourced the car from the finance company provided 3 months cover on the car and it is slightly out of this warranty.
I have contacted the finance company who provided the car, and they have said that they are only willing to repair the vehicle if they can prove the fault was there at point of sale. I have only done 1500-2000 miles in the car, and I am just seeking some advice as to what I should do next in terms of this. They have sent out a mechanic to write a report on the car and I am just waiting on their response…... Read more
If the Ecu has failed from water ingress, then it may be possible to revive it by putting the unit in an airing cupboard or on a radiator to dry out .I have had some success with this method. Also make sure the water drain aways are clear where the ecu is located under the wipers.
Hello
Forgive me for just jumping in as a newbie but I am going to look at a Leon 1.9 TDI on Wednesday having owned a Golf Mk4 1.9 TDI for the last ten years which is now nearly 20 years old and is like one of those clown cars where any minute now it will just fall to bits in a heap. Time is not on my side.
I know very little about cars but have been researching for a few weeks now and as Im now semi retired I only do 6000 miles a year and all the newer Diesel vehicles after 2009 have to have DPF I understand but a few pre 2009 had DPF also.
Its a Seat Leon 1.9 TDI Stylance 5dr at 88000 miles, its had the cam belt done I believe and the test history looks like its past every year with a full service history. £2400 with three months warranty. Anything I need to look out for on this car?
Ive read all the horror stories about low mileage Diesels and DPF but was under the impression that the 1.9 TDI in a 2007 Leon is pretty much the bullet proof engine thats in my Golf, is that correct? But the important question is how can I be sure it is DPF Free? The dealer doesnt know.
Im also open to suggestions for other models. I tried a 2010 Hyundai i10 today 1.2 petrol and it was ok. I just like the torquey desiels which I am used to. Read more
Welcome to Dorset, Avant.
We have decided to give the A3 a chance. My daughter's fiance is a salesman at a new car franchise and took the car back as a part exchange. The last owners had it for 6 years and were obsessive car cleaners it seems....
Hi - I was driving along merrily yesterday when my 2014 reg Passat's engine management warning light started flashing and the care went into limp mode. My local independent VW specialist have diagnosed an EGR problem. That sounds like quite a common problem and there is quite a bit of press coverage linking this to the emissions fix (which I had done about 10 months ago). I've read some reports that in some cases VW have covered the cost of getting this fixed.
Does anyone have any experience of this?... Read more
I had the Emissions recall done on my 2012 Alhambra Last July. The flashing coil light came on last Wednesday. Called out SEAT Assistance, EGR fault, dropped off car at dealer on Thursday, SEAT authorised 100% good will Friday & dealer ordered part, collect car Tomorrow, Monday.
I'm in the process of buying a 2 y.o. car from a car supermarket. On top of the price of the car, they are charging me £150 for "indemnity insurance". As far as I can guess, is this to protect the dealer (maybe for professional negligence?) rather than me? Why am I having to pay for this? Does this insurance perhaps protect the dealer if I sue him (e.g. for false representation of the car, etc...?). Are there any circumstances where this insurance is of benefit to me? Could I claim against it, and if so, for what? Read more
Ask to see the policy documents and what you can claim against what false histories. That should provovke an interesting conversation!

Hi,
My rear window wiper has stopped working. I checked the fuse and it is fine. I then removed the rear door skin and unpluged the electrical connector block and tested that there is power coming through to it with a test light. There is 3 places on the connector plug where the prongs of the wiper motor would connect / join. The middle female part of the connector plug made the test light come on. nothing happened when i tested slot 1 and 3 slot.... Read more
Do you have a code reader? I use to have mk2 Volvo s40. The front windscreen wipers would periodically stop working. Clearing the DTC for the car made the wipers work ok again. Never did figure out what the car thought the problem was.

Did you get new injectors or reconditioned ones?
Diesel Injectors if not set correctly can cause all sorts of noise and vibration....
