Seems a strange post given we are no longer in the 1980's but here goes. Just brought a Corsa 2011 (D) SXi however not sure it has a factory fitted alarm.

Before I carry out the usual tests can anyone confirm yes or no?... Read more

Whoever has given the advice on checking MOT history online (gov.uk) thank you. Learning from the forum it stuck in my brain. I was interested in a 7 year old car ( FSH but advert did not say who by). I checked on its MOT history and looking at one failure (major central exhaust, horn not working, another with advisories on tyre close to legal limit, brake pads worn and other brake problems. Between one failure ( two days before expiry) and pass car had done 350 miles three weeks later. Would appear to have been driven without MOT. The one owner would appear to have neglected care as soon as out of warranty. Definitely did not give the impression of someone I would want to buy a car from.

As often advised, when not sure and not mechanical - walk away.... Read more

There is a big difference between a car which has done 20k miles and only had one or no service and one which has done 120k and only been serviced every 25k or so.

Most cars can, frankly, easily take a bit of a late service or one gap without any consequences at all but if this goes on for years and years it will eventually take its toll......

Hi All,

I'm currently looking at to buy a new car for myself and I'm stuck on deciding between the skoda fabia and Volkswagen Polo both of them 1.2 tsi and have almost the same specs. The price for the fabia is €16,100 on the road and for the polo it's €15,500 on the road. I've searched a bit online and everyone rates the fabia as a better car I would like an opinion from you guys to maybe finally decide which one to choose.... Read more

Remember the new Nissan Micra is just a current model Clio underneath. They shares floorpan, suspension, electronics, engines, gearboxes etc etc and is unlikely to prove as robust as Micras traditionally were. The 900cc TCe engine is still an unknown quantity longterm.

Got to say, it is a rather nice looking wee car though and is well liked by the press.

Some might say when the repair cost equals its value.

Our 16yr old 122,000m Focus has just failed the MoT, rusty sill <12" from rear seat belt mount. It will cost around £80 +vat to weld. The rest of the car is fine. One of the 'buyanypram.scams' offers £110, minus £50 admin fee, which probably approximates to the trade-in value.... Read more

Aren't those changes more to do with just applying the MOT as it essentially should've been, e.g. checking to see if the DPF has been removed, and that vehicles perform as they designed to the standards at the time they were built? The emissions standards for such cars haven't changed, only how rigorously they are checked, it appears, perhaps in the light of Dieselgate.

I've used the odd tank of premium diesel for years but since the VW scandel I've used more of it and for the last few months nothing but V Power+Nitro diesel. Over time a couple of things have changed.

Firstly my DPF is not doing any active regenerations, none in 2500 miles, this is my third DPF car so I know the symptoms. My driving has not change and most of the miles were in cold weather when its usually at its worst.... Read more

I will admit to using premium unleaded in my work scooter - it does over 100 miles a day into London and back and works hard lugging my tools at *ahem* MPH up the A3, then a mix of stop/start traffic, and short trips to wholesalers.

I want to do a leak back test as i have got loud diesel knock and smoke

I have bought 3mm clear tubing and 4 water bottles... Read more

The smoke out the back is definately unburnt fuel no codes or lights on dash

Cant see it be a piston hitting a valve as the engine would of chewed its self up by now...

My wife and I were looking for a car to fit two car seats but now she has moved the goalposts. She thinks it would be nice if her dad could fit in as well. So I need a car that can fit two car seats and ocassionally three adults. Our mileage and use means petrol is best. Ideally under 15k.

We were looking at cars with two fold down seats in the back that could fit children in but mostly they seem not to have isofix points. Which is odd as many new car seats are isofix only. A new Touran fits the bill but the older ones lack the isofix points and are mainly diesel. Equally I don't want anything as big as an S-Max. I wonder if a CR-V could fit both seats, with one in the middle, and an adult next to them? Am I going to have to go to a dealer and fit both car seats to see if it is practical? Read more

I have a 2013 CX-5 Lux 2WD with approx 55,000 miles on the clock. Driving at around 30mph, the engine cut out without any warning - no spluttering, no failure lights. I just coasted to the side of the road to park at the kerb. The engine hasn't started since. Starter turns well, but just won't fire.

It's been with the dealer for three weeks now. They initially replaced the PCM (main computer) to no avail, and since then they have struggled to identify the cause.

Their latest theory is that it may be the fuel pump, and they are trying to suggest it was caused by me filling it with petrol instead of diesel two years ago, despite havingthe tank drained before the engine was started.

My questions are:... Read more

I would agree with the advice above, take it to a diesel specialist, they usually know what they are doing, many garages don't.

Just replaced a front brake caliper to now find out that the other front caliper and opposite rear are now sticking. Fuel consumption has dropped and heat generating in affected wheels(all understandably).

Is it just a case of replacing all the calipers or could it possibly be an electronic fault? have been told it might be some kind of an active brake system applying to much pressure and not fully releasing espacially as its front and rear opposing calipers. No faults showing on dash. Read more

Thanks for all your advice, will try it out.

We thought it was strange that 3 of the calipers should fail within such a short space of time, which led us to think it may be some kind of system fault or possibly contaminated fluid?...
