Hi - new to this forum and visiting UK later this year :-) I'm after some Fisholene (fish oil anti-rust) for squirting into the chassis, door panels and box sections. Works really well but can't find it in the UK. Anyone come across it? Alternative might be Dinitrol but like to stick with the devil I know! Read more
Thanks all. No, not thinking about bringing it back to NZ - I'd still use fisholene here! Am planning to treat a van in the UK in a month or two which I expect will need the treatment more so than it would down here where the lack of water is often more of a problem! Thanks again for your help with this - much appreciated. One other request - please arrange a good summer up there ;-)
Slight potholes cause "clunking" noise from Toyota RAV4 XTR(2007) OS rear suspension. Toyota dealer replaced Shock Absorber to no avail but stated it could expensive to locate cause but car was safe to drive having checked out the suspension. Local garage replaced anti-roll bar links. Still not cured.
Mileage 52,000 in 8 yr old car which was perfect until now.
It is very unsettling despite assurances from dealer.
Anyone with similar or ideas of cause, or should I sell? Read more
A friend of mine had a problem something like this with his RAV4, but his was a later model. I can't remember the exact details of what the fault was but I do remember it was found to be caused by a strap which was connected to removing the rear seats banging on something inside the car.
I would check any such straps and seatbelt buckles very carefully.
Do you like your own car? Do you get in it and look forward to the journey? Is it suitable for all your needs and worth whatever you paid or are paying for it ?
Or is it the bane of your life, a needed but irritating financial burden?
Presumably most people who'd hang around a motoring forum have at least some enthusiasm for the subject.
I've had a lot of cars, 40 or more at the last count, but then I am a bit old. Some of them have been quite nice things, others more utilitarian, some were thrilling to drive, others were more of an effort. However, the common denominator for all of them was that I'd still rather have had them than not.
To this day, despite decades of having to cover substantial annual mileages, by and large I still get a good feeling when I turn an engine on in preparation for a journey, I look forward to the feeling of driving and still enjoy it.
Do you still like driving, or if life allowed you to do without your car, would you rather not bother? Read more
I still enjoy driving after 33 years. However the limited nose to tail traffic I have to face drives me mad, especially when people try to gain unfair advantage (usually in fancy cars); like the Porsche Panamera last week that overtook a line of traffic at lights and then nipped in front of the first car, so he could turn left, without being caught for more than one change of light.
I have enjoyed most of my cars, but the ones I miss are a...
My Clio has failed its MOT because it's polluting... I've got the four gas analysis and was wondering whether anyone knows what to make of it. I've changed the spark plugs and filter and put in an additive, and although the values dropped from the initial fail, it's still not good enough:
Acceleration (max CO 0.3, max lambda 0.97-1.03)
CO 0.92
Lambda 0.978
Co2 14.4
O2 0.18
HC 90
And
Idle (max CO 0.5)
CO 0.54
CO2 13.2
O2 1.93
HC 169
I live in France so I'm not sure whether acceleration and idle are the correct ways if translating the two tests but I hope you might recognise them from UK terminology (I've never had to MOT a car in the UK). I'm stuck and don't know what to look for next. Does the high CO suggest catalytic converter or oxygen sensor...?
Any thoughts...? Read more
Hydrocarbons (HC) is unburned fuel and measured in parts per million (PPM). The maxim limit for MOT is 200PPM. Theoretically this figure should be zero, although it never actually is since not every last scrap of fuel will ever be burned. Gas analysers sometimes read zero when the HC is barely measurable, but in reality this is near impossible to achieve. A high HC figure indicates inefficient combustion, possibly due to an engine misfire, vacuum leak, low fuel pressure, or loss of cylinder compression.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is produced when petrol is burned. A rich fuel/air mixture consumes more oxygen than a lean one, and consequently more CO is present. The maximum limit for MOT is 0.2% CO.
Before you condemn the catalyst I would use a scantool and do some fuel trim checks. Make absolutely certain you have no vacuum leaks or anything obvious that would make the ECM respond to a lean running condition by adding fuel. The Short Term Fuel Trim and Long Term Fuel Trim will give you a very good indication of how the engine is running, and what the ECM is doing to correct it if it isn't running properly. If everything seems ok then try some Cataclean in the fuel tank. Follow the instructions on the bottle. It may improve things.

Hi
I had a speeding ticket and 3 points in 4/2012 - for some unknown reason I clearly didn't tell my insurance company - no idea why it obviously didn't occur to me although it was on the day my dad died so at that time it was an excuse but not now. ... Read more

Wrong again , ( apart from pointing out that car dealers don't like cash deals ). With your money making next to nothing in interest at the bank , whatever deal you make, will cost a lot more . Yes I know 0% finance deals are available but, the lender makes the rules, i.e. how much deposit, how long the term and the final payment amount. If you can find the cash, pay by cash ; it won't cost you anything in interest, and the interest you lost at the bank ( typically between £1 and £4 per £1000 per annum ) is hardly anything worth talking about ! At what time or month in a year would be the best time to buy a new car ?.

Specifically not applicable in Scotland - although they are they are trialling a 50mph HGV limit on the Average Speed Camera single carriageway sections of the A9 between Perth and Inverness.
