Speeding points in 2012 - eiger

Hi

I had a speeding ticket and 3 points in 4/2012 - for some unknown reason I clearly didn't tell my insurance company - no idea why it obviously didn't occur to me although it was on the day my dad died so at that time it was an excuse but not now.

My insurance has just continued to roll over each year so I didn’t even think about telling them each time.

I've only just realised I didn't tell them and am now concerned over what might happen. They are due to run out on 13/4/15 (if I am right they come off the licence in 3 years).

Can anyone advise? Thank you.

It's ok I think I'm loosing my mind. This was waived the fine that I paid was in June last year - I have just called the insurance comapny and need to call back tomorrow with an offense code - don't think I'll be going to jail after all :)

If I recall correctly the insurance form includes a question about offences and convictions within the past 5 years. I think in principle the insurer could refuse to honour the policy in the event of a claim (and them somehow finding out you had points which you had not declared).

I think you safest bet would be call them, acknowledge the oversight and pay the premium for this years policy and the remainder of policies for the full 5 years. You could go online and get a dummy quote from your insurer both with and without the points to get an idea of what sort of price you might be looking at.

I confess to running the full 5 years with 9 points on a motorcycle licence and never declaring them. I was much younger then, I'd declare points now. In any case have held a clean bike licence for 10 years now having mastered throttle control and having taken the advice of the traffic police officer in the unmarked car which pursued me along the M20 all those years ago. "if you're going to ride at that speed, pay attention to every car you pass". Sound advice.

Points on your licence count towards "totting-up" for 3 years, but have to stay on your licence for 4 years and need reporting to your insurer for 5 years.

Many insurers don't increase the premium for one speeding offence but most of them would use non-declaration as good enough reason to reject a claim and they do check then.

Just inform them, any increase in premium is of course justified on their part.

I got caught by an overhead camera on a motorway bridge doing 81 mph, they must have made a fortune that day for all other cars seemed to be cruising along at that speed. Anyway, the usual fixed penalty and 3 points. I informed my insurer who immediately demanded £70 to continue the policy. This was my first offence for this policy so God knows what a second offence would cost. Needless to say I was not impressed but the thought of invalidating my insurance was worse.

I was asked at my last change of insurance (end dec2014) to provide copies of driving licence, written proof of ncd and the vehicle registration document. It was clearly on the final page before I clicked on pay.

Via money supermarket.com and the insurer was LV.

And no I'm not complaining!

I guess the more competitive the insurer, the quicker they charge for everything they can - my insurer, KGM through the IAM/Cornmarket haven't increased the premium despite two set of "loyalty points" in the previous year.

At your next renewal, change companies and declare it then?

If you trawl around the internet there may be a company that only asks for 3 year history - dont know if that would be likely though.

Edit: Just reread your first post with edit, so this suggestion is n/a

I wonder what % will be of people caught out when documents are required and insurance companies check against the electoral register too. It'll be another reason not to pay out.
