After driving a VW Lupo for the past eight years, I finally found myself in the position to purchase a new car; VW Golf MK6 2012 1.4 TSI (160ps) 40k miles.

Agreed I used to do the same probably OK if you have the cluth depressed. But I will change my habits - just to make sure - especially if handbrake slips at all which at the end of the day is was we are protecting against!

My gamble is I've saved so much money on purchase price i've left capital in the bank! With my mileage i initially calculated it would be 15 years before the extra petrol fuel costs would exceed the capital savings - I'll keep for about 8 years and throw away all being well (refer to original post) . Saying that fuel economy MUCH better than expected - very nearly what I got out of my 1.9pd

I am considering buying this used van that has 92,000 miles on the clock. When should the belt, pulleys & tensioner be changed as I have not inspected the owners service book.

And whichever comes soonest.

I've seen some disgustingly poor service intervals on some cars because the owner didn't read this and it was upto 4 YEARS between oil changes because they didn't do the mileage.

I am about to buy the above and have heard ill-reports of problems with timing chains on these engines. It appears that on the EA211 series engines they have switched to a belt, which presumably has an interval change. Any one have any experience/ advice on the issue? And how easy to tell which is fitted? Read more

But the easy way is to look under the bonnet. The belt drive engines have a plastic belt cover at the drivers side end of the engine.

The chain drive engines also have a plastic cover, so does that make it easy?

My nephew has a 2003 Skoda Octavia 1.6 petrol which has done 67000 miles. He likes the car very much and has had very few problems since he bought it in December 2014. However in the last few days the engine management light has come on and has stayed on. The car continues to run very well despite this, no loss of power or any increase in fuel consumption. His mechanic has checked it out and says it is a faulty sensor and is not going to cause problems. He did replace a sensor for the radiator fan and the light went out but came on again a short while later and has stayed on since My nephew trusts the garage a lot as he has used them for years and they do all his servicing and MOTS. They have all the latest computer aids apparently. I was wondering whether forum contributors agree with the diagnosis and whether it will give him problems if he does nothing? Read more

Another for the temperature sensor here.

I had the same problem on my OHs 2003 Audi 1.6 A3 (same engine?)...

Can anyone tell me some used cars that have a fairly low rpm at 70mph? It find engine noise quite annoying on long journeys and some cars do over 3000rpm at 70mph. I wish 6 speed gearboxes were more common. Read more

Hi,
Long story short.. I'm looking at getting a Mazda 6. I don't drive many miles, mostly local, long trip once a fortnight maybe.

I found a red Mazda 6 2.0 Takuya 2011 that I really took a shine to. Good price, local garage, 3 year warranty thrown in (1 year Mazda, 2 Ford Gold Protect).

Now.. I test drove it, and it felt a bit sluggish lower in the rev range. I figured this was just due to me being used to a TDI (1.4 polo 14 years old.. still felt nippier!).

I put a deposit down as I did enjoy driving it, but this did play on my mind. If it was like that with 2 of us in the car, what about 4 people and fully loaded?

I test drove a 2.2 diesel. The low down torque was great, but it felt heavy in comparison, and ... I am slightly averse to the sound and smell of diesel, but I can perhaps get passed that.

So I'm confused what to do. Has anyone else tried a 2.0 petrol Mazda 6? How did it feel? Regret buying?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Read more

Mazda have had no issues with the skyactive - it was the 2.2D before the skyactive (the one in 2011 mazda 6's)

Hi yes" it will cut when im approaching a junction or having to slow down".If the engine only cuts during these conditions, then I can't see it being the crank sensor. Some diagnostic equipt will allow the idle speed to be increased .Perhaps this may help?

Looking for a little help with my Peugeot 207 1.6 hdi. (57 plate). I have had it a few months now and it had developed an intermittent EGR fault - causing it to lose power and the regain it after a plume of thick black smoke. As of today the engine management light has come on and the warning message - depollution system faulty -

Could this be down to the EGR valve? I know that these cars have a reputation and I can safely say I will never purchase another. I'm just looking for a solution that's not going to break the bank (because it's already broke to be honest!)

Any and all help is appreciated. Read more

The 1.6 HDi in a 207 of this age only has a DPF in the 110 bhp version

That is certainly true for the Focus when fitted with the same engine so no reason for it not to apply to the Peugeot.

First thing, great car which ticks multiple boxes. However in past 6 months has clobbered me with £1700 of engine repairs leaving me shaken and stirred:

1. Carbonisation of sump owing to faulty injector blow-back. Fixed with new injectors at £700. Thank god I read the signs and put into Mazda immediately - "if you hadn't sir this would have been a £9k new engine. We're seeing more and more of these now - seems to be a real problem". Really? (Shame it's out of warranty)... Read more

Goldbug, would you like to tell us how old your CX-7 is? Mazda diesel engines made between about 2005 and 2010 were notorious for severe engine problems, but Mazda would have us believe that newer cars don't have the problems.

It is probably a car from that period, they stopped selling them in about 2011....

I went there a long time ago looking for a cheap'ish Mondeo the type they used to sell thousands of. It was full of Corsas and Fiat 500s. Talking to one of the guys he said the scrappage initiative did for them and never been the same since.
