Does anyone know if this system can be activated and left operational so the car accelerates on its own in heavy traffic? If it can its going to lead to frustration.
I was on the M1 at rush hour last night behind a newish Golf. It was heavy traffic with typical stop, slow moving, accelerate, slow, stop traffic, never reaching more than about 20mph. Sort of traffic where it is possible to almost leave the car in gear on tickover so it moves slowly in the queue.
I was keeping a couple of car lengths behind the Golf, the queue started moving, the car in front of the Golf moved off, the Golf didn't move until the car in front was a good few car lengths in front, Golf accelerated, then when it was about 5 car lengths from the car in front of it the car simply slammed on the brakes and stopped leaving a huge gap. Car in front moved off, because of the huge gap Golf moved off almost immediately, car in front slowed, Golf slammed on and stopped leaving a huge gap again. Of course every time a car stops it lengthens the queue behind.
This happened half a dozen times, leaving me wondering if ACC was on causing this pattern of go and slam on. Whatever it was a less alert driver will end up in ghe back of this Golf before too long.

Evening all - I'm looking at trading my manual Hyundai i40 in for an auto. I don't know much of the long term reliability of autos. Are they suitable for taxi, are they reliable etc. I know I might take a small hit on MPG but I can live with that. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Ciaran Read more

Thanks for the info on the sensors. I've tried cleaning them but no joy.
So must be one or two faulty ones. I have it booked in this Monday coming for a safety check at an Indy Mercedes place in Glasgow. Might ask them to have a look at the sensors. Had the Rocker covers off the other day to check for leaks from the injector seals. All appear dry and tidy . ...

Funny you should mention it Concrete. The guy may have shot himself in the foot.
It turns out he has got a credit hire taxi (ouch). Yet has chucked in a whiplash claim. Now I have had whiplash many years ago, and I can tell you the last thing I would have thought about doing is driving, let alone doing it for a living. I have planted the seed with my insurance company.
Would you mind listening to these two clips (if my uploading skills have worked!)

Background: Audi UK say this is a normal characteristic of the engine. If this is the case, I am disappointed as for the first two years (since new), I have only been able to hear a quiet engine that sounded like a car. Consequently I have been diddled out of the pleasure, and have had to wait over two years, before I get a 'the normal characteristic' that sounds like a tractor first thing every morning <*** style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Trebuchet MS', Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px; background-color: #e8e9eb;" title="Rolling Eyes" src="http://www.a1-forum.co.uk/a1forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
Two separate Audi dealerships have said they should make this sound! Now, am I being paranoid or does this sound awful!!

If this is the chain cam engine used in earlier cars it could well be an indication that the chain/tensionsers are worn.
But don't panic. Our neighbours son has a 10 plate example which exhibited a rattle and the local dealer replaced the chain, tensioners etc for a 25% contribution from the owner. Not cheap but better than suffering an engine failure and on a 5 year old car that was 2 years out of warranty you cannot realistically expect more....
Female friend (mid 40s - capable woman) getting divorced and has moved to a cottage on an isolated farmstead accessed via a shale surfaced track with some very steep bits. One mile to the tarmac surfaced road. Her Fiat 500 (1.2 engine and stupidly low profile tyres) is not coping with the rough surface and if she stops part way up, there is not enough power to start again without going to the bottom again. With winter coming, she could be stuck at the top or bottom and neither is any good. So she needs more ground clearance, grip and/or power.
So short of moving somewhere more sensible, what canyou suggest? Assume spending up to £12,000 and she needs reliability. Nothing too big mind........ Read more

Is it safe to leave these chargers connected for say 9 weeks while away? If I simply disconnect the battery as per the handbook, will there be any electronic issues when I come to reconnect - and how would I go about locking/unlocking the car? Read more
Word of warning this is not a good solution your planning to keep the car in a small poorly ventilated garage i.e. Hydrogen & Oxygen. These gases are given off after the battery has reached 95% of charge.
My charger with a permanent float setting maintains the charge at 90% to prevent gassing. Since my charger is now 26 years old I would exepct modern chargers such as the C-Tek to have a similar feature....
It appears the VW system operates as soon as the car is moving. Beware if following any of their vehicles in queues. Maybe this is why collision avoidance braking is now deemed necessary on so many new cars!
