Hyundai i40 - Auto vs Manual - TopScot

Evening all - I'm looking at trading my manual Hyundai i40 in for an auto. I don't know much of the long term reliability of autos. Are they suitable for taxi, are they reliable etc. I know I might take a small hit on MPG but I can live with that. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Ciaran

If you are going to be doing a high mileage as you probably are, an auto box is unlikely to last as long as a manual one and will be a lot more expensive to replace but if it will make driving easier for you it could be worth it.

Might be an idea to see how much a transmission oil change is, both at the main dealer, and at that highly competent indy that all taxi drivers know about in their locality.

Presumably it's a torque converter box, (Aisin?), if it is then regular say every 40/50k oil changes is a sound investement for a long life.

I've had TC autos for donkeys years, can't recall a single failure but all had, and the three current still have, regular oil changes.

Hyundai/Kia are moving on from licence-built powertrains - their 6-speed units for Santa Fe are designed in-house in Germany (big Hyundai R&D there) and their 8/9/10 speed autoboxes for Genesis are in-house.

I don't know whether the i40.Sonata autobox is in-house or bought in.

I won't have any autobox without a torque converter - some of the other types have promise but I need to see 50+ years of development first!

Thanks for that. Yes I will be doing high mileage. My mate had a citreon berlingo auto and has done 160k in 3 years and has had no problems with his
