Could be a problem with the charging/alternator system. If the battery voltage starts to drop, then electric consumers will begin to shut down.

Hiya thankyou for your reply the car has a new battery no warning light came on the car just suddenly started to run like it was running on 3 cylinders it was runnin fine for the first couple of miles then lost all power as I said it had a new water pump and cam belt fitted prior to the problem but I cant understand why it drove perfect for a couple of miles then suddenly stop.

New gude and idler fitted as well as the pump/belt?

And is this the engine with the adjusable cam sproket or the fixed sproket?

New cam belt tension incorrect and the belt has jumped a few teeth. Do not try and start the car until the timing has been checked. Regards Peter

Thankyou peter I tried telling the mechanic that but he reckons it wouldn't of started but I do agree with you he checked the belt and said it is still tight and could not of jumped.

Hiya no just the pump and cambelt was fitted and I've no idea which sproket its got a mechanic done all the work out drove fine for a couple of miles then suddenly started to knock and lose power then engine cut out I'm so confused by it all the mechanic is also baffled by it.

You have to remove the cambelt to change the pump so it would have to be re timed, if its only one tooth out it will still start but doesn't normally misfire.

The engine I think you will find is a 2.0.Hdi 8 valve, about the best common rail engine ever made.

You say the water pump and cambelt were replaced. Then the engine started knocking and cut out after a couple of miles. Well the obvious place to begin is by rechecking the valve timing, as has been said above. It sounds liked it's jumped teeth, and the most likely cause of that is an incorrectly tensioned belt or a worn crankshaft key. I think you'd be very lucky for it not to have valve damage, but let's hope it hasn't.

I'm sure your mechanic is fully aware that valve timing is not about lining up the marks on the pulleys. It's about the correct relationship between the relative positions of the crankshaft and the camshaft. Just because the pulleys appear to be correct does not mean the valve timing actually is. It's all too easy to assume it's right, when in actual fact things may not be quite as they appear.

Good question railroad I certainly hope so he just tipext the cranks up and put them back in the marks when finished sounds like that all went wrong I just hope he ain't knackerd my engine up .
