Hi Guys

I'm in Portugal & I've been offered one of the above. It was UK reg. at one time but I can't get the details right. All I can see are engines bigger than 1.8.... Read more

As I am being forced to recall the b***** things, the 1.6 didn't always avoid valve bending, but 2.0 was ok, (it was also the only one bearable ..... on a smooth road; on a wind free day). The mk3 Cortina was a very symbolic car in my working life as the next attempted trade-in of one became the catalyst that determined when I retired from motor trading. It took two weeks after the decision. I was free!!! - As for them having value today, ... best not go there.

That 1.8 Galant BJ, will it have the three belts (balancer shafts) or one, do you know? Googling was indeterminate for me. Thxs...

I've a failing Rear Shock and have got hold of a rear shock from a 2002 model. They look the same. Both are SHOWA but with different part number on the cylinder MCW rather than MGB. Does anyone know if the 2002 is suitable. Read more

sadly the bikers' forum here is very quiet, I think for such a specialist question you may need to go to a honda forum where no dout you will get a swift answer to your question. I'm a kawasaki guy, a dedicated forum for my bike has heaps about what shock from which models are transferable, I'm sure the equivalent Honda forum will be as helpful, especailly for a bike as popular as the VFR.

But it's always nice to see a post in this section!

I have a Golf bought brand new exactly two years ago.

Mileage is 15,000 and it is used daily.

Just had the car serviced and am told The car Ned's new rear discs and pads.

I looked at the damage and it looks like the pads have never been in contact with the parts of the disc which is damaged (Rusty).

The VW garage have quoted 315.00 pounds to repair.

I believe there is a latent defect which should be under warranty.

Has anyone seen similar damage and what did VW do about it?

When brakes are under utilised it doesn't take long for localised rust to form on the discs which will cause pitting that will then stop breaking effectiveness on that spot that then will make the pitting worse - thus starts a visious circle...

Hello. I was wondering if anybody could help. The car is a 2003 xsara Picasso hdi. The blower wasn't working, so I checked fuse, all ok and has 12v. Ignition red wire has 12v so that's ok. I fed the motor 12v and it works, so I splced 12v from the ignition live onto the thick red wire that goes into the motor, and it now works fine (only with engine started not with ignition). Problem is now the heaters won't get warm, definitely an electrical issue as the pipes are red hot. Is there some sort of control unit that has failed? I can adjust the speed of the fan on the panel, the heat doesn't seem to adjust?

The car has a/c if that helps. Read more

If you have no heat, can you see the airmix flap working?

I am throwing this in for comment/discussion/criticism/ridicule (no name mentioned).
It is obvious that the latest batch of non torque converter automatic transmissions in (small) cars seem to have problems.
Why not replace the traditional conventional torque converter with an electric motor?
Are there any obvious (or other) reasons why this wouldn't/couldn't work? Read more

I have been a petrol head for 60+ years (in my 74th year now), non of the earlier posts have brought anyhing new to me. I wasn't trying to revolutionise the motoring scene, merely to simplify what seems to be a problem with existing systems. Due to circumstances (my wife's driving licence) I am required to drive automatics. I can remember when automatics were terrible contraptions, sluggish, extremely thirsty and not particularly reliable. My present car (Nissan Almera auto, owned six years) suits me fine since retiring from work this year. Eventually it will have to be replaced but I don't really fancy one of the new fangled systems.

Hi All

My 1650 mile 1000cc ecoboost c max is making a soft knocking noise from the rear of the engine when cold. This is a bit like a bearing on a heater fan ( theheater fan turned off of course when testing for noise) or a mechanical rotory pump knocking at low revs. It the noise accelerates with revs and goes when the engine has realy warmed up. Is this normal or have I got a problem?... Read more

It appears they all rattle and clatter like this from cold, I had a good listen to friends engine. Its not the turbo, its the valve clearences and piston slap. I thought I had seen the back of this some years ago, when engines got quiet.

Does anyone know if this system can be activated and left operational so the car accelerates on its own in heavy traffic? If it can its going to lead to frustration.

I was on the M1 at rush hour last night behind a newish Golf. It was heavy traffic with typical stop, slow moving, accelerate, slow, stop traffic, never reaching more than about 20mph. Sort of traffic where it is possible to almost leave the car in gear on tickover so it moves slowly in the queue.

I was keeping a couple of car lengths behind the Golf, the queue started moving, the car in front of the Golf moved off, the Golf didn't move until the car in front was a good few car lengths in front, Golf accelerated, then when it was about 5 car lengths from the car in front of it the car simply slammed on the brakes and stopped leaving a huge gap. Car in front moved off, because of the huge gap Golf moved off almost immediately, car in front slowed, Golf slammed on and stopped leaving a huge gap again. Of course every time a car stops it lengthens the queue behind.

This happened half a dozen times, leaving me wondering if ACC was on causing this pattern of go and slam on. Whatever it was a less alert driver will end up in ghe back of this Golf before too long.

It appears the VW system operates as soon as the car is moving. Beware if following any of their vehicles in queues. Maybe this is why collision avoidance braking is now deemed necessary on so many new cars!
