I'm looking for a BMW 1 series 118D with about 50,000 miles. I have been at 2010 models but have noticed some very reasonable 2009 models on the market.
Im aware of the timing chain issue which affected them up to 2009 but am I okay if I look at a model made in 2009 after the issue was fixed? how do i know if its a 08/09 model or 09/10 model.. does the reg change? ... Read more

Thanks for all of the helpful information/suggestions. Unfortunately no success so I'm beginning to suspect that he caught or disturbedsomething in the mechanism. Such is life !
Sat at idle the revs will occasionally increase like the throttly is slightly pressed. Depressing the accelelartor deturns it back to the 800. It increases to around 950rpm..... is this an underlying problem??
Egr is blanked off and a sound like exhaust blow but had replacement exhaust except cat. Seems lower on power / accel also.... Read more

Hi everyone,
When the transmission is cold, the 3rd to 2nd downshifts are very rough (abrupt) and the 1st to 2nd uphifts are rough and sometimes flare.
The ATF and filter have recently been changed but did not resolve the issue. Actually, the ATF change caused the 1st to 2nd upshifts issues. Before the ATF change, I had only the downshifts issues when transmission is cold.
I would really appreciate if I could get some help on this matter.
Thank you,

how does this tie in with the german cars having the bottom ten spots in engine reliability or is this based on high motorway mileage journeys or just badge snobbery? Read more
google "german engine reliability" :)
The engines were the best thing about BMC / BL cars by far. The B-series first appeared in the Austin A40 Devon in 1947 ( a great car that, way ahead of the competition), and the A-series in the Austin A30 in 1952, and it soon replaced the gutless side-valve engine in the Morris Minor when Austin and Morris merged.
When introduced, yes of course, but not really updated and kept in production far too long - the A-series was out-dated by the late '60s when all it's competitors had aquired 5-bearings and a 8-port cylinder head....
I took my car for a Gold Service which included a valet. When I went to collect it, the car was barely hoovered. The guy who brought the car over to me, kept thrusting the key in my hand hoping I would drive off. I complained to the manager that my car had not been given a thorough valet as was stated when I booked my car. He promised to have it cleaned and returned my car back the following day. That was in April.
Six months on, I turned my rear windscreen demister when I noticed only one strip working. Spoke to my neighbour who rebuilds cars and sells them on. He told me that the rear windscreen had been scrubbed thoroughly and damaged when cleaned.... Read more
May be cheaper to buy a complete s/hand tailgate with glass.Plenty on flea bay for around £50.
My 2009 Hyundai failed its MOT in may 2014, the garage said the car was slipping. I allowed them to investigate and they found cables to have seized up. They replaced these on hyundai warranty. Now in Octoer 2014 and approximately 4000 miles later, warranty expired I am encountering the same problem. On an incline with the handbrake engaged the car slip. Brakes are absolutely fine. They have found fault with the rear callipers and would like £750 to change them with genuine Hyundai parts.

Hi... am thinking about buying a vw passat diesel 170 BHP, this one has full history, but has done 95k in the 18 months of its life. Its got full history (long life at 20/40/60/80k miles), so suggests it has been well maintained.
However, what else should I look for, or should I spend the same money on a 3 year old car with ~60k miles (same price for same spec car)
Any thoughts / views welcome.
Also - anyone know how often the cambelt needs changing on these? Read more
I would say the answer to the question is completely down to the price!
If its only a marginal saving over a lower mileage equivalent, then no - but if its a good deal cheaper then it might be in better overall condition than something 3-4 years older purely down to its age.

No, but I'll close it for you.
