In your position I'd look at either a Toyota Yaris 1.3 (better to drive than the press imply) or a Ford Fiesta 1.25 or 1.4 (good to drive and there are lots of them around). The Suzuki Swift is another possibility but there are fewer of them on the market.

The 207 might be OK but any ageing French car is a bit more of a gamble than the ones I've mentioned.

vvtli 190 celica 2002.I have a problem when the engine gets warm, when I bring the car down to tick over,it revs at 1500 and blips the throttle to 2000,on off, like someone revving it for you, it then will suddenly change, drop down to 900 and runs sweet, few minutes later it's at 1500 again revving to 2000, could this be a problem with the coolant temperature sensor, iacv? Maf? Can't find. Any vacuum leaks as such, please give me your knowledge. Thanks,j :-)

My C4 Picasso was bought from a Citroen main dealer as a 4-mth-old used demonstrator with 2000 miles on the clock. I was able to add Citroen backup to the level of the Hyundai 5-year deal. The main pros of the car are its stylish looks (it turns heads), and fuel economy of which I am pleased. The 1.6 diesel engine should be reliable as it is used in so many other makes of cars. A 60mpg ave is based on a 64 mile daily run of 16 miles in London and 8 miles country roads against the rush hour, with 40 motorway miles, not in boy-racer style. Handling is good and the turning circle, very good. Space in the rear with seats up or down is good, and the screen navigation features are impressive.... Read more

Apparently, the 2.0 diesel has a proper auto box rather than the 'automated manual' of the 1.6 and is buttery smooth...

DO NOT ever buy an MMT.

As they wear, things go wrong. And only dealers can fix them - eventually....

You've already posted the same question on Toyota Owners Club - where it has been confirmed that both petrol and diesel auto options for the first generation Auris is the MMT gearbox.
