My fiancee's passat has developed an irritating fault. The warning signal has started beeping intermittently thinking the doors are open. the warning on the display changes between all four doors and the boot.

At the same time that this started, the remote keyfob has stopped working for locking the car. It still works to open the car - except not the boot. Opening the car with the key in the lock will open the boot.... Read more

This makes a lot of sense - the passenger window has recently become problematic and doesnt seal properly. as you mention the contol module is under the floor on the passengers side - must be the problem!

Thanks for your help

Hi All.

Recently I've not been using my car very much, I last used it on Sunday & all was fine but on Tuesday I went to move it & the battery seemed flat (the wing mirrors also didn't open as usual when I used the key fob to release the locking). I went on the eurocarparts web site & entered my car registration & it displayed the battery's for my car, & I then ordered at Excide premium 075 Battery (242mm x 175mm x 175mm, 60Ah 600Cca). When I got it home & opened my bonnet I noticed the battery I'd just purchased was shorter than the one on my car. The battery on my car is the original one & fits in what I would describe as a oblong type plastic bucket it is also a silver calcium 60Ah, 590Cca & is clamped from above to hold it in the oblong bucket. I contacted eurocarparts & they rechecked their system & said the one that should fit in my battery holder would be a higher spec one. I then replaced the Excide Premium battery with a Bosch S4 100 battery (278mm x 175mm x 175mm 72ah, 680Cca). Hopefully it will fit into my battery holder when I come to fit it??... Read more

You got 2. the wrong way round;it's the replacement that's a different size, not the Ford battery. If you went to a Ford dealer, you'd get an exact replacement.Vehicle manufacturers building thousands of cars can have batteries made up to their exact requirements.Aftermarket stockists cannot afford to hold batteries to fit all makes exactly but hold a smaller range that will fit and work.

I recently purchased a Vauxhall Astra H auto estate which has 36,500 miles on clock. The car is ex mobility and has a FSH from dealer , and I am very happy with it. However, I see from the website that HJ recommends a cambelt change every 40,000 miles or 4 years. The car is 3 years old (60 reg) should I be looking to get the cambelt changed at 40,000 miles? How can you tell if it needs it or not?
Thanks Read more

What does the service book supplied with the car recommend?

10 years motoring is what I'm looking for from a used (3-5 years old) SUV, living in the sticks - few hills but slipping and sliding a seasonal prob. SO the question is what to go for?

Budget: I don't have buckets of cash just got an inheritence and my runaround is on it's last, around £12K so it's got last :)... Read more

I wouldn't rule out the Skoda Yeti Outdoor, I believe topgear tested it against the Range Rover and it outperformed it!

Don't be so ridiculous, the Range Rover has vastly more wheel articulation and much more ground clearance - it can also wade at practically double the Yeti's maximum depth - not in the same league - not even close. You might find one or two situations where the Yeti performs well thanks to the lower kerb weight or smaller size but these will be the exceptions - not the rule....

I just wanted to mention this, as I saw Honest John mention a problem I might have with my Fiat. Really to save someone some money (unlike myself).

I took my Fiat 500 into my Fiat garage as it had developed a problem with the intermittent windscreen wipers - they only work intermittently. The Fiat garage reported that a couple of "faults" had shown and suggested replacing the Stalk that controls the windscreen wipers. I went ahead (cost £350.00). This did not solve the problem so the Fiat garage said best to replace the wiper motor (£150). I baulked, took it to my local garage, who did this work - it also didn't resolve problem, and led that garage to Google! They then spoke to a different Fiat garage who confirmed that I might have a "body control module possible fault" and had I also experienced the odometer flashing - yes. Also, just as I pulled into the last garage the Check Power Steering light came on, and I've had to reset the clock so many times I gave up. It would now appear that all these unlinked events could be down to the BCM, and that will cost me a further £400+, but might just need flashing! Just a word of warning to anyone else who has had these issues and 1,000 apologies if it is already on here - I searched and could not find. Read more

On my wife's 500 the AM radio went awol, the power steering light came on regularly, also the intermittent wipers worked intermittently and the dual logic gearbox often refused to shift first time into any form of forward drive after reversing out of our drive into the busy main road. The glass roof had started to delaminate and the alloys were corroding from the inside out (Fiat rejected our warranty claim at 2 years). 3.5 years old, 33k miles, 3 main dealer services, no faults ever found.

More often that not you can keep up a steady speed without accelerating and braking by being light on the loud pedal.

That's a particularly useful method in a low powered car....

At the moment I have a 1999 1.8 petrol Ford Focus Estate. I do in the region of 22000 miles per year of which there is quite a few towing miles.

I think I can save around £700 to £1000 in fuel per year, if I get a diesel estate. I have got it down to 2 and it is either a Mondeo or Vectra.... Read more

Both cars at this age will be showing some signs of tired and neglected engines and mechanicals with possible expensive repairs looming, especially on the diesel injection systems and dual mass flywheels and clutches.I would go for a petrol Mondeo. The fuel costs may be more but the repair costs will be less than a diesel.hth

I agree with the above....
