I know it is early in the cars life but has anyone compared or seen any mention of a comparison between the new Mazda 3 fitted with 16" and 18" wheels? I am more interested in ride quality than ultimate handling. I have driven the Sport fitted with 18" wheels and while the ride seemed ok, I am wondering whether the "lesser" models fitted with 16" wheels have a noticeably better ride. My local dealer only has a Sport available for a test drive so I am not able to make a comparison at the moment.

How do I change the aerial on my mondeo I think this is the reason that radio won't pickup stations plays CDs ok Read more

Ford aerials rarely give trouble.Remove the aerial lead from the back of the radio and get a short length of wire approx 30cms long and insert it into the small antenna hole. You should now pick up some reception,if you don't ,then the radio is faulty.hth

In a couple of years we intend to retire, we will keep our Roomster but we want to buy a tax exempt car for pleasure.

What we do not want is one of the grey porridge saloons that have all the charisma of a brick but neither are we trying to buy something super sporty.

Instead we are looking for a 'practical classic' that we can enjoy. Our first thoughts were aimed at VW beetle or Healey 3000 (practicality or beauty) but we are open to suggestion.

We know that buying the best example that is in our price range can help to mitigate against future financial ruin and I do not want to restore another car.

Any advice for a pair of old codgers?

Happy Blue!

My father owned five of these. Amazing cars, and you don't see them any more. Probably not the best car to drive occasionally unles the rotary engine was replaced with a regular one.

Possibly the motor has failed.Check the power and earth supply voltage at the connector to the motor ,behind the glovebox.

I've recently bought a nice example of a 9-5 Aero HOT saloon (auto) and have only just noticed that the reversing lights don't work. All other rear lights are working, so wondered if anyone knew what the problem might be, and how easy to fix? Read more

I have recently purchased a 2004 Alfa Romeo 156 Veloce 1.9 16v JTDm

I and i am a little concerned as I have an engine warning light appearing with a message telling me to take it the a garage.

The seller said that the warning light had been on for over a year and that it is related to the ERG value. I researched this and that didn't seem to be too much of a big deal.

I have not noticed any issues in performance and it has been driving fine.

My main concerns are that sometimes there is a faint car smell of something burning its very faint and goes away quickly. (I could be paranoid it is so faint)

Also I went to the shop the other day and as I went to drive off it would not start. I used some jump leads to get it started again and it has been fine ever since, this was 2 days ago.

I know that the obvious thing to do is to tie this into garage and I intend on doing this. But does it sound like I could have any bigger problems here?

Thank you for all of your advice in advance Read more

Ben's burning questions

I recently got my car back from its first service. The itemised bill showed that I had been charged almost £60 for the oil. I queried this and determined that they had used 3.2 litres of castrol magnatec C2.

I pointed out that I could have bought 4litres of that from the Halfords next door for about £35, and asked how they could justify charging double that. After a long hard think they said that the oil that they use is Castrol Magnatec C2 professional. This oil not being available to the general public, I was not comparing like for like because what they had used was better.

I think that's a crock, but I'm trying to stay open minded. Is there a difference between the pro and retail grades of oil, apart from the colour?

Next time we agreed that I would bring my own oil. I can get the pro stuff online if I look hard enough.

Even so, I expect that if I bring my own oil they'll just charge me £50 for the sump-ring to make up the difference. i can hear the excuses now - it's a genuine part sir, manufactured to exacting standards. You don't want to invalidate your warrantee using someone else's ring.

Thoughts appreciated

As long as the oil you use meets the manufactures spec you will be fine. www.moto-oil.co.uk stock some of the proffessional oils, they also have some good offers on.
