Following someone in traffic who insists on holding the car stationary on the footbrake so the brake lights dazzle peircingly, is really annoying. One tip I can pass on is putting main beam on thereby flooding the back of their car with light, which helps much reduce the contrast and discomfort, especially on dark wet nights. This is a bit aggressive though, so I wondered if you had any ideas? I suppose the real answer would be for an EU directive to fit a timed module to new cars so that when it is stationary, and the brake lights applied for , say, more than 10 seconds, a light of equal intensity would illuminate on the instrument binnacle, either that or the airbag should go off. My partner only has an automatic license and she wants to upgrade her 2003 Toyota Yaris. The yaris has been a great little car. Its reliable, Great on fuel (40mpg average around town) and nice to drive. Shes just looking for something abit bigger and classy!

I want a diesel for economy and we have £4500 max to spend. Now i work for a Mercedes dealership and speaking to the tech guys i should avoid semi autos, even audis great DSG gearbox, and CVT gearboxs. My sisters Micra CVT needed a £2000 gearbox rebuild so i can understand that! Ive also driven many horrible semi autos (was a driver for prestige garage) and although ive driven many great VAG DSG cars ive heard the horror stories and any mechanic i speak to says steer clear!... "you want a hyundai i30 auto diesel, but i dont think any are old enough to be cheap enough yet"

Might be worth looking at the Hyundai i30 1.3 PETROL though - could be the right price and economy not too bad - a friend of mine has managed over 40mpg over 2 years of ownership. Good old fashioned reliable traditional auto box....

Use Davros and APV postings as a buyers guide, they both sum up the car.

I've had an Outback 2.5, '56 reg. automatic from new. Apart from wear and tear - and supermarket dings - it has been wholly adequate. To date it has done 81,000 miles and the battery has been changed because the voltage had dropped low on cranking. I didn't know that, the engine still started, but it was a planned maintenance item (better safe than stranded). The car had started to rust underneath so it has been Wayoyled, especially at the back. I did much of the work, but the Expert had to take down the protective covers and finish the work. I now leave it to him....

I've got a rattle on the engine on cold start up and sounds a bit like a sewing machine when warm, just wondering if it's the tappets or something a bit more serious. Runs perfect otherwise, doesn't burn any oil and plenty of power. Any one have any ideas. Thanks. Read more

What are the signs of a bad or faulty timing chain or hydraulic tensioner, and how do you check for these signs. Please share any information you know. Thanks Read more

>>I've got engine rattle at idle

I had an engine (BL 'B' series IIRC) whose timing chain wore through the surface of its hydraulic tensioner. Result was a noisy chain because the oil was squirting straight through and not putting much pressure on the tensioner. Also oil pressure was reduced as the tensioner wasn't restricting the oil flow....

I've followed the instructions to pair my phone on SYNC and after connecting a few seconds it drops connection.

My phone is on the Ford list to work with it. It updates regularly. The Bluetooth is on and connects successfully. What I have read is that some older Android phones require a 4 digit pin instead of the default 6. The advice I've seen to obtain a 4 digit pin is to do the usual pairing then when the 6 digit pin displays on the screen you hit the ">>" button on the steering wheel, and this should show a 4 digit pin instead.... Thanks Cygnet and jc2.

I have paired my wifes Android successfully. Strange thing is I can Bluetooth my music to play via SYNC, but not my phone itself. I have seen a video that shows how to reboot to factory setting, but I don't want to try this just yet until I've exhausted other avenues....

Nine months ago I purchased Honda CRV petrol from my local dealer. It came fitted with 3 Dunlop tyres and 1 Falken. I need to replace 2 and have selected to fit Michelin Tour HP because they get good reviews. My chosen tyre dealer has refused to fit them, saying that 4 x 4 vehicles should only be fitted with all 4 tyres of the same make to prevent damage to the transmission. Is this correct and if so do I have any redress on the Honda dealership for selling a car with mixed make tyres. Read more

The new CRV always sets off in 4wd. While the earlier one would go to 4wd on demand, same as my CX-5.

While the T30 and T31 i had were always in auto 4wd, so the rears came in as required, even when fwd is selected its still possible that 4wd will cut in, thats in the manual. The xtrail 4wd system is more sophisticated that most soft roaders.

Just considering buying a new car online via a broker who puts you in touch with a main dealer in UK from whom you buy the car, prices are so much lower than my local dealers.

How is this possible ? Why doesnt everybody do it ? Read more

Before you commit to this, have you spoken to any of your chosen makes recommended dealers within reasonable distance and asked then if they can come near the deal, or do a servicing package to help even the playing field over time.

The only reason being that if you buy from and get the car serviced at the same dealer, then once warranty has run out they *should* be more sympathetic to goodwilll if anything goes wrong...obviously this depends what make you are buying into, some (dealers and manufacturers) care about their customers others don't....
