Ford focus, intermittently judders and loses power. Usually after about fifty miles. Have replace fuel filter and pump. Drives fine for ages then shudders a bit. Then a mile or so on, just loses power over about thirty seconds. Mechanic says when he changed the filter, but before changed the pump, it did it all the time and wouldn't start properly. What can it be?!

Thank you in advance.

You need to get the ecu engine codes read. Replacing bits without error codes is more like pot luck. Sounds more like a coil packs issue failing when hot, rather than a fuel filter.

the central locking wont open any of my back passenger doors, it was just the driver side to start with but now passenger side is the same, you can hear the mechanism working so I assume there is power getting to the locks but they just wont unlock Read more

Under the carpet is very thick foam. This can hold quite a few pints of water without the carpet even getting wet.

Also if water has been under there in the past, the wires get covered in verdigris & eventually break off from the plug. You really need to get to the CCU under the carpet & check all the wires. Also check inside the CCU box as water may be trapped in there.

After my car key (the one that I use) gave up on me in a supermarket car-park I took it around the block to a garage and asked them change the battery. The mechanic tested the key on his test rig and said that the key should work. I tried it again, but nothing. I went back and begged the guy to indulge me and change the battery, which he did with bad grace. After a bit of twiddling in the car it worked again. When I arrived home I found the spare key and tried that one. The spare key didn't work, so I went back to the garage and asked them to change that battery too. It still didn't work, so when I took the car in for its service at the usual place I asked the proprietor to check it. He found that the key had 'lost its programme' and referred me to a specialist. After a lot of work by the specialist, entering numbers into keypads etc., and one or two attempts, I am now again in possession of two keys that work.

I return to the moan that things used to be so simple. If you lost your keys you could ask the first teenager to pass by to cross the wires for you and start the car. Now I have the situation that if I don't start the engine within 20 seconds of disarming the alarm then the key has to be turned and the button pressed. If the battery in the key is flat or low then I'm stuck / immobile.... Read more

I am sure the time out for the immobiliser can be re-programmed for up to 50 seconds.May be an idea to check with the alarm specialist who re-synchronisd the keys.hth

I bought the above from a private dealer over a year ago and now the front tyres need replacing however when I entered my reg plate for quotes I kept getting the warning to check what size I have fitted on the car which seems prudent before I buy however it turns out their 195/55R15 not the recommended 195/50R15!

I have debated about whether to buy four new correct size tyres despite the rear two still being in excellent nick as the cost of 50 profile tyres is quite a bit less than 55 size however I am planning to trade in the car in about three months and expect to get under a grand in return for it's condition and mileage.... I doubt if the salesman taking yours as trade-in will bother to read the tyre size. I'd leave the 55s on the back, I can't see it making any difference to the car's behaviour.

If it does come back and bite you, you can always (honestly) claim you didn't know it had the wrong size fitted and when it needed a couple of new tyres you had the correct size.

I notice from their website that they also do a V8 conversion for an E-Type and even for an XK150! Desirable, maybe, but not classics any more.

Hi folks, I'm hoping someone can help with a nightmare I've been having with my Nissan Primera P12 Petrol 1.8 car since the weather turned cold.

The battery is fine and the engine actually turns over, but it just won't start and usually it takes anything up to 10 minutes to get it going. Once it actually starts, it runs like a dream and I can stop it and start it up again instantly for the rest of the day. However, if I leave it for a few hours or if the engine gets cold again, I am back to square one

I've had it diagnosed, but no faults came up. Reading from the internet, it seems as if a whole range of factors could cause this issue: starter or alternator fault, vacuum leak, faulty fuel return regulator or fuel pump check valve, bad earthing on these models, cold start sensor, etc, but I need someone who knows what they're doing to investigate these or what the fault may be. I'm wondering if anyone on here knows a reliable mechanic in or around Nottingham who'll be able to have a look and say what the issue actually is so that I can have it fixed, please? Read more

With the engine taking up to 10 mins to start, providing it's turning over at a reasonable speed I think you could disregard the starter motor or alternator as being the problem.

It sounds like it would be more of a fault with one of the engine sensors causing the problem....
