the central locking wont open any of my back passenger doors, it was just the driver side to start with but now passenger side is the same, you can hear the mechanism working so I assume there is power getting to the locks but they just wont unlock

Had this on ours and it was the first sign of problems with the ccm comfort control module ecu under the front passenger carpet. The alarm going off randomly was the next sign. The ecu was wet from the well known (not to me at the time) water ingress. Local VW indie spent a couple of hours unplugging it all, drying it and the carpets out and curing the water ingress problem and luckily we had no more issues.

hi, checked under passenger carpet, all was dry, now today no windows open and central locking completely not working

Under the carpet is very thick foam. This can hold quite a few pints of water without the carpet even getting wet.

Also if water has been under there in the past, the wires get covered in verdigris & eventually break off from the plug. You really need to get to the CCU under the carpet & check all the wires. Also check inside the CCU box as water may be trapped in there.

VW lock units seemed to take a dip in quality from 2004 onwards - is your Passat 04+?

We had the same on a Golf Mk5 - you could hear the lock motor doing something, but wasn't unlocking, and needed a whole new lock unit.
