< I get the impression Japanese parts have a reputation for being expensive in general, and particularly the lower production volume models I suppose since there'll be fewer pattern-part makers. >

As I compared the price of Pug parts earlier, it may be fair to remark that car prices have fallen in real terms - twenty years ago the 205 range cost £6500 to £14500 for the soft-top. Makers have had to compete, and more income now comes from selling parts....

2004 ford mondeo tdci. Hi I'm new here do forgive me if I do this wrong. Car lacking power, black smoke and excessive oil usage. Removed the fuel filter yesterday to find the diesel black so now I know where the oil is going but where to start to find the problem? High pressure pump? Read more

The insults are still flying, with no benefit to Rory or his question, so thread closed.

If you still need advice, Rory, do feel free to start another thread. I can promise I'll censor it if words like 'tosh' and 'drivel' appear again. There's nothing wrong with healthy disagreement, but words like that have no place in a forum like this.

Hi all,

I have noticed that the rubber dust cover on both of the rear shock absorbers are torn. Otherwise the shock absorbers seem fine - the car passed MOT and as far as I can tell, they work. I am wondering if I should replace them because of the damaged dust cover.... Read more

Wow, I had believed there was some kind of instrumental test of the damping but just looked it up and, of course, you're right. I am shocked, forgive the pun.

Anyway, now I am convinced so I am going to replace them at a suitable time....

The inside fuel-cap flap lists the recoomended tyre pressure range for all main tyres (between 2.1 and 2.7 bar). I can´t find the recommended value for the space saver spare though. Anyone know - and can tell me where to look ?

Found it - right where I should have looked all along - on the side of the tyre itself. Dóh!!...

Does my Peugot 407 HDi 2007 reg have a timing belt or chain? The service interval says the belt needs replacing at 100,000 or for arduous driving 75,000. I do a school run 2 times a day that's 8 miles each way from a cold start - should i get it changed at 75,000 (if it's a belt?) Many thanks. Read more

If the components instrumental to a regeneration are functioning - the glow plugs, glow plug relay, fuel cap sensors, cooling fan - and the car is well maintained then the DPF shouldn't be a major problem, but these components will wear sooner than if the car spent its life on the motorway.

i have a ford fiesta mk6 year 2002 (5 door). its my first car and i have noticed that when i turn on my healights either the side lights or main they fully work but there is no indication of them working on my dashboard.

im not 100% sure what other symbols i could be missing either now. the fog light symbol shows when i have the fog light on, the indicators show as working when operated, but the headlights just will not show up even though they are working.... Read more

chrisb1783

it seems as though there is no "green light symbol" to show that the headlights/sidelights are on. the only way to tell is that the whole dashboard lights up!

i was quoted so many prices from various people and got so many answers from the local garages....

i have a 2000 leon se that has the climatronic ac unit.

apart from having major lcd bleed on the right covering the fan level etc, it also refuses to blow hot air.
everything else works fine.... Read more

caeos

all the pipes are hot into the bulk head, the existing panel has major bleed anyway so i can only read the temperature and not the right hand side fan levels etc.The heater matrix is clean. i can hear the fans adjust in speed and from feet to dash.
Plugging in will cost ££ anyway as i dont know anyone down the pub who has the kit!

A friend is looking at both these cars (s/h about three years old). My inclination is towards the Jazz as another friend has run one for years - it has been 100% reliable and he finds the dealer service excellent. By comparision I feel VW became just another car years ago and neither are especially reliable nor enjoy good dealer service. What's your view? Read more

The first owner paid for the service plan. I bought the car 6 months old and 300 miles on the clock. Tranferable to next owner..

Hi, not used a forum before but here goes, a couple of weeks ago i took my peugeot 407 sw 2.0 hdi in to have a new dual mass and clutch kit fitted, on return the clutch was great, but the engine has now lost power, struggles to get to 70mph, I took the car back to the mechanic and he did a diagnostics test and did find a possible fault with the turbo, but could not pinpoint the exact problem. Its going to have another looking at. odd as it seems, but could fixing the clutch have altered anything electronically, or otherwise? I'd also agree that something hasn't been put back correctly.

A Planet diagnostic might shed more light on it, assuing that your mechanic is using a generic fault code reader:...
