I've always serviced my cars, IMO the biggest stumbling block with a new car is figuring a safe way to jack and support one end with axle stands. Once you've cracked that and you know the car is safely lifted you can do virtually any service procedure, but it can be a bit offputting to the inexperienced.

Just bought 2nd hand car for my daughter

there is no mention in owners manual how often the air con should be used especially in winter> Read HJ advice should be on all year and run on max cold in winter months for 10 mins but surely this defeats object of buying city car to great mpg ???... Read more

Based simply on my observations I think that with A/C on my cars have done about 6% less mpg. The wifes car with climate appears to be affected less simply because it only cools when it needs to. The Puma we had was terrible on the motorway with the A/C on, forever surging as the compressor cycled. Tried another, exactly the same. You had to increase the pressure on the accelerator when it happened o kepp your speed up, obviously this used more fuel. never notive#ced this on any other car although the Micra did have a very uneven idle as the A/C cycled on and off.

Hi everyone,

My car had a tyre blowout on the motorway approximately 2 months ago - it was a new tyre, Capital, that had been fitted 3 weeks prior. It exploded with no warning, and I was lucky to escape with just some damage to the front bumper of the car (no other cars involved).... Read more

I had four kumho tyres fitted in the summer I drove on them for less than a month but at high speeds across Europe over 1000 miles. Shortly after leaving the wuro tunnel and joining the m20 the osf ture blew. I put the spare on and in the morning I contacted kumho who agreed to replace it. But maybe I was lucky.

Hi, interesting to read your post today.

I have just bought a second hand Doblo and am getting a pinking/squeaky type noise when the car is idle. Bit dissapointed as it sounded fine on the test drive....

Hi,

I am considering pourchasing a car that is currently taxed as disabled. The owner is telling me that he needs to send his tax disc back to the DVLA and I can tax the car with the new keeper supplement at vthe post office tomorrow.

Is this correct providing I have insurance and MOT?

Must say I am confused.

I purchase an ex-mobility car in June this year . I took the V5 new owner slip to the DVLA local office and filled in another form. I then took the tax disc away that day....

Hello, All,

Which Citroën model, far past, recent or present, would you say gives the most cossetting, compliant, 'floating' ride over speedhumps and the lunar surface that typifies the UK road now, please?

I ask because my passenger has a medical condition that isn't going to get better; so my wish is for a magic-carpet-with-a-roof.

Thank you,

Never had that problem with my XM - always beauifully supple. Maybe you have an electrical fault incorrectly isolating the extra hydra-active sphere intermittently?

VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI DSG (2010)

When in 5th and 6th gear and only when applying the accelerator, you can hear a quiet but apparent grinding noise that seems to be coming from the front of the car. Its got worse over the past few months. You can sometimes hear it in 4th too but its most obvious as soon as it jumps in to 5th gear. Given the above I suspect something amiss with the DSG g.box (maybe an internal bearing??)... Read more

According to the German press, the recall relates to a problem arising mainly in Asian countries where due to a lack of cooling sulphur components in the synthetic oil undergo a chemical reaction resulting in compounds which may cause short circuits in the sensors leading to a shutdown. Changing to a mineral oil removes the problem (allegedly).

hello my blower has stoped working on my zafira life 2005 b model. it stopped a few months ago but after some investigation it turned out the connection at the bottom of the fan unit was loose. on tuesday morning i got caught out by the frost and left my car running and went in to get some de-icer but when i came out i noticed the sceen was still misted. the fan had stopped working i checked the connection and cleaned the connection points and checked the fuses by swapping the 40amp ones around. I notied that the dome bit on top of the fan unit is shut and managed to get my hand in to see if the fan had seezed but it moves round fine. the stange thing i did notice is the is still heat comming out when i drive. sorry to sound long winded i just needed to get every thing in .

As title....Not me but a friend's just fitted the proper xenon headlights on his Rover 75, as far as he knows it's the standard 4300k bulbs not the fancy posy blue things, but the light/brightness isn't what he thought. My car (04 Mondeo) with standard halogens is just a bright if not brighter....something's obviously wrong but we dont know what. The lens are clear and not marked or chipped, can anyone help or any ideas Read more

Brit_in_Germany

Were the "projector" headlights of the 75 still normal halogen bulbs? If so, I suspect that as stated above, the beam direction optics (mirros & lenses) are not completely compatible with the directional light output from the bulbs. As a result, the beam is not well focussed and appears dim. Since there doesn't appear to be a market for Rover 75 HID units, I guess these don't exist so my only suggestion would be to try a different make of bulb in the hope that the beam may be better.
