VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI DSG (2010)

When in 5th and 6th gear and only when applying the accelerator, you can hear a quiet but apparent grinding noise that seems to be coming from the front of the car. Its got worse over the past few months. You can sometimes hear it in 4th too but its most obvious as soon as it jumps in to 5th gear. Given the above I suspect something amiss with the DSG g.box (maybe an internal bearing??)

Its been at VW twice and both times they have fobbed me off with excuses saying it could be tyre noise or a loose panel etc. They even told me they took an exact model out and it made the same noise....

My thoughts are to get an independent gearbox specialist to look before going back to VW with their verict. I would even pay for this service. Car is stil under warranty until Feb 2014 so I have two months to get this sorted before it becomes chargeable....

Advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Mike B, Manchester.

Des the noise only happen during the gear change or all the time in fifth gear?

You need to take the car back to VAG the gearbox is about to go into many pieces.

Noise only happens when the foot is on the gas. As soon as you take your foot off it stops....

When it makes the noise is irelevant VAG are recalling 2.6 million cars with the 7 speed DSG gearbox. If you keep running the car the gearbox will more than likely fall apart internally.

Huh? Your point?

Not universally true, but as a rule most gearboxes, of whatever flavour, that have a problem (wear, breakage etc etc) make more noise under power and quieten on over-run (unless they're too far gone).

It doesn't take much Googling to realise VW have considerable problems with their DSG boxes. Go get it seen to. Don't be fobbed off.

Then sell it before it happens again.

There is loads on noisy 7-speed dry clutch version DSGs on the internet and recalls in several countries. I have been in correspondence this week with HJ about a different problem on my older 6-speed wet clutch DSG (see my post "Replace mechatronics unit or not?"). HJ commented:

"What is going on is that VAG has had to recall 2,600,000 DSGs and s-tronics worldwide to change the fluid in them from synthetic to mineral because crystalline deposits form in the synthetic fluid that cause the mechatronics unit to blow its fuse and lose drive."

Do persist with a goodwill claim from VW, assuming you have a service record including the vital 40,000 mile DSG oil change. I hope you will get satisfaction as I have finally done today. I won't mention the exact terms I got after persisting but I'm happy.

Sorry, I said "goodwill" but of course your car is still under warranty, which makes your case all the stronger. Also, it might be prudent to get some written correspondence in place with the dealer now, so that if matters drag on and the 'box fails at some point after the warranty has expired, you have documentary evidence it was an incipient problem well before expiry.

You may be better with a utube vid and and get support from local press. Many local radio stations have a consumer program. Bad press is more effective, as I found when I complained against Monarch. In farness to Monarch they were good and in that they gave me a total refuned and all my expenses totaling what I paid for the flight and hotel for a two delay. Monarch real failing is their head office does not work weekends!

Anyway that is not something VW or the dealer is going to give you, but your dealer is the weak link. I am sure the fear of bad press will be enough,

A side point for me is the VW do seam to get them self in real scrapes with recalls, they simply have to many of them and handle them badly. The dealers treat their customers like mugs. While I guess this is true of many dealers regardless make, why not be honest. Dealers get paid for warrantry repairs and recalls. So why lie and try and get customers money for something thats VW fault?

I think there is a bit more to it that than changing the oil .

According to the German press, the recall relates to a problem arising mainly in Asian countries where due to a lack of cooling sulphur components in the synthetic oil undergo a chemical reaction resulting in compounds which may cause short circuits in the sensors leading to a shutdown. Changing to a mineral oil removes the problem (allegedly).
