I recently read that police cars have their speedos calibrated and would like to get my prius calibrated as it currently under reads by 3mph at 30 and 5mph at 70 as checked by gps on a level surface.

Can anyone advise me on where to go for this adjustment to be made. Read more

Not always a mile-our local one was a quarter mile-perhaps some forces have problems multiplying by four.

So, what are the rules on declaring a write-off. My girlfriend sold her old car yesterday. When the guy came to pick it up, he informed my girlfriend it had been previously written off as a Cat-C. Luckily the guy said he wasn't too bothered about it, but that if she had noticed it, she could have taken the garage that sold it to court. They're well-known for being dodgy, they regularly sell cars with dodgy MOT's and have also been done for clocking as well.

So what's the deal with selling cars without declaring whether it's a write-off? Is it a legal requirement? I know it's on the V5 document, but if they refuse to show the V5 then what? Read more

Or whether he is really private.

We're back to where we came in. If he isn't 'private' his won't be the name on the V5 - which he may be unwilling to reveal....

I have just had my Car MOT'd and the garage called to say that it failed and needs the Front and Rear Brake pipe/lines replaced at a cost of £300. (they said that they need to replace over 4meters of pipe/lines).

Is this a true reflection of the work carried out at £300 or am I getting ripped off?... Read more

Alot easier to replace them if you can get the old ones off and copy the shape.

Well, don't want to drag up the old cliche about football players.. That car though needs to be dragged out and ought to receive some car servicing after that.

Have posted under technical matters and been told that I need an air leak test and balance test. Also suggested cleaning my throttle body for hesitation problems whilst idling. Looking for a garage that will do this on request and not be ripped off.

Taken it a few times to the same place and not really happy that they've gotten to the bottom of things. Anyone have any suggestions of any decent places where I can go? Read more

I was changing the rubber corner part of the intercooler pipe on my 2001 focus tdi and I snapped a thin plastic pipe that runs from the metal bit of the intercooler pipe at the back of the engine up to what looks like some sort of sensor hanging directly below the windscreen at the back of the engine.

Never mind replacing it, couldnt you just slip a joining piece of rubber tubing on? (This assumes you have 2 ends to play with).

Wish i could, unfortunately only have one end. The remaining bit is also very brittle....

Today the Engine System warning message came on, the rev counter indicated "higher" revs than the engine was doing and they seemed to be an abnormal "air intake sound".... Read more

I'll second you there kev.

By the sounds of it, there could be a charge air hose split or blown off what with the noise you describe brj. Easiest way to check is to open the bonnet and get an assistant to rev the engine (when stationary) and listen for the "whooshing" noise to try and pin point which hose has gone....
