Hi

Does anyine know how to adjust the headlights for driving at night on the continent? Or is it a question of attaching some beam benders?... Read more

Don't worry about it - I used the useless beam benders when I first came over here to live.

As long as you are not dazzling oncoming traffic no one will worry about it - just use your headlamp cockpit adjustment and lower them a couple of points.

Me and my husband were on the way to work this mornnig. My husband was riding my scooter. We were pulled up by the police and spent 1 hour with the "hero" of the day. My husband has 1 bike and has a full insurance and insurance to ride other bikes, BUT not MINE, as I am his wife. Apparently as now we are married, he owns the scooter and needs to add it to his insurance? We were about to receive FPN and 6 points, but after calling insurance ourself in front of policemen, they confirmed we had insurance and my husband can ride anything he wants... We were set free after 1 hour. Could someone comment on this? Does this law really exist?

Yet another example of the ridiculous vehicle insurance shambles in the UK.

I am resident in France, many things over here are more complicated than they need to be, but vehicle insurance is much simpler....

Rear brake shoes binding. Usually moisture - rusting to drums. Self adjusting may not work properly or a build up of dust inside the drums.

Remove and clean out dust/inspect linings etc.....

No problems from new but car has stood for 2 weeks and now will not start. Battery has been charged and charger is showing 12 volts. Interior lights come on but main dials do not light up.

It appears that car electrics have just shut down.... Read more

Half of drivers are too tired are they? Of course this comes from BRAKE who have nothing better to do than say blah! blah!blah! They never suggest a cure do they. Lorry driver kept awake until midnight due to local twits making a racket in this warm weather gets up at 5am to drive 250 miles. I know, he can phone work and say he is too tired to drive to which the boss replies - no work, no pay! Same goes for most who have to drive even though their sleeo has been disturbed. This organisaton do not live in the real world. They live where everybody has a perfect 8 hours of unbroken slumber in a nice rural community!
They would be better employed pressuring the police to clamp down on boy racers with those noisy exhausts on "micky-mouse" cars who roar along trying to attract everyone's attention the poor sily sods. Read more

Totally agree with not2posh Brake are not a road safety organisation but a bitter anti motoring lobby. I feel sorry for anyone who has lost someone close through a road accident or any other cause (as is the case for many people I can speak from experience on this) however Brake just campaign against all aspects of motoring from speed limits to 4*4's and now this. Perhaps they should imagine what the UK would be like if they got there way, The destruction of the competitiveness in our remaining industries, unworkable distibution costs pushing up food prices and more time spend traveling the same distances to work and back every day so every woring mother and father in this country gets to spend even less time with their children.

It seems organisation like Brake dont live in the real world and never stop to think about what it would be like if they got there own way (Which is sadly what seems to be happening). Amazed groups like this are allowed charity status.

My wife was involved in an accident, and our insurers are now claiming this was 100% her fault. I would appreciate any advice as to whether this is technically correct, and whether there is anything else we can do.

The site of the accident is where a private road from a business park joins a single-carriageway A-road. My wife was turning right, i.e. onto the far carriageway. The road at this point is bendy, and is a 40mph zone despite being in the countryside. There is a bend to the left of the junction, which gives drivers on the A-road initial visibility of the junction between 300 and 400 feet away (depending on vegetation growth), and similarly gave my wife a view of at least 300 feet of the road.... Certainly have told the insurers, but as the police (and indeed a passing ambulance) weren't present until after the accident, their supposition doesn't get us anywhere. It has becmoe clear from the advice here and elsewhere that there is no way for us to "win" this one - even if the police get back to me with a witnessed admission of speed at the scene or in the 999 call, the insurance company will hold us partially to blame for undertaking the riskier manoeuvre, and as I understand it any degree of blame above zero has the same financial impact on future premiums.

Planning on getting a panel van and converting to a stealth camper;

1. Am I better getting a younger chain drive cam (i.e.Renault Master 2010 on) with high mileage or an older belt drive with lower miles?... Read more

Renault vans are not the most relaible of vehicles unless the later one has improved, they look nice and are well appointed but if you do a search for problems they have plenty. The Citroen/Peugeot diesels are about the most reliable although they are all far to complicated now.
