I understand that the Fiesta now has electric power steering. Do these have similar problems to that fitted to those on the Nissan & Fiat cars ? Read more
Saw an E reg BMW 325i in a car park recently, in good nick. I think the 325i was a the top end of the 3-series performance-wise. Its tyres were R14, and 60 profile. Forgot to check the width, but looked like today's London cabs, I'd guess about 195.
How times change! The equivalent model today has 255/35 R19!! Read more
The fashion started in Europe-Germany actually but then they've got suitable road surfaces;the Granada/Scorpio of the 90's was available with 24" rims as a production option but only for the German market.
I am finding out information to help me when I next renew my car. I would prefer an automatic but there is rather a bewildering choice. I am keen to know about reliability and smoothness of system. Also at what mileage might there be costly repairs ( I know there is an element of chance ) I am looking for safety, comfort and reliability in the car. I would like something medium size e.g A or B class Mercedes, S40. I would appreciate any information re automatic choice and/or any car suggestions 2009 onwards. I can't afford a Ferrari or Rolls Read more
Thanks for the continuing helpful posts. I'm certainly going to be better equipped next time I change. I'm going on holiday for next 10 days so will not be able to promptly thank any posts I may receive in that time. This really is a great forum.
the front quickclear windscreen has a band about 3" wide top to bottom in the middle that doesn't clear of frost, even after being on for over 5 minutes and the rest has cleared. ford dealer have said this is normal for the model, anyone else have this problem, is it normal??? Read more
I've had several Focuses from the Mk1 to the facelifted Mk2. All had quickclear screens and apart from a narrow line in the centre of the screen it is NOT normal for the amount of space you describe.
I presume you are the first owner, so it has a Ford installed windscreen. If its had a generic replacement via a screen/insurance company, Ford wont touch it under warranty. Check the Ford logo. Should be on base of screen....
Sealant used on front cat to back cat joint ... any comments/ advise on problems Read more
Thks.. Is there anyway to tell when looking at sealant if correct one has been used..
Have checked vehicle.... thought front cat had been replaced several weeks ago... When looked at front cat. ... did not look new ...... observed sealant on cat to cat joint.. have been advised sealant should not be needed if new front cat fitted as would bolt securely on.
My car is used infrequently and often sits for a week to 10 days between driving. I've noticed I often get white smoke (as far as I can tell from the driving seat) from the exhaust for a few seconds after a cold start, and the engine seems to struggle to run smoothly for a couple of seconds while smoking. Other times it starts immediately from cold without these symptoms.
The car drives normally with no loss of power or other issues and has been correctly maintained. Starting when warm there is never any smoke.... Read more
OK thanks. Will have to try each plug I guess. Not sure how to access them as they have a black rubber/plastic cap in the wiring on each plug, but I can maybe disconnect the loom.
Have to get to Bournemouth on Thursday - there and back in the day with two people. Flying via Southampton is about £600. Train is about 4 hours 45 mins non-stop, but the cost is over £160 just for me. My fellow passenger is over 60 so he gets cheap tickets.
Alternatively we can go in his new Lexus Hybrid RX. Driving is about 4hours 30mins without stops, but we can leave earlier than the first sensible train. The route I think is M6, M40, A34, M3, M27. ... Read more
Yes the S-Max would have done the job with the same economy and speed but not quite the comfort or silence but the enjoyment would have been more. The Lexus offers a turbo like level of acceleration which was very handy but I couldn`t warm to it. The cabin was a curious mixture of minimalism and fuzziness which made my S-Max a much easier place to sit and operate.
A lot of it is what one is used to though and I don't deny that an GS450h is an awesome machine. It's perfect for it's owner - a 69 year old captain of local businesses.
my vw golf mk 5 (7&1/2yrs old) screeches when I engage the clutch and then to get it moving I have to rev the car like mad to get it going otherwise it cuts out. Read more

I would have thought just about every small car produced nowadays has some type of electric assistance on the steering,
