We've been having intermittent problems with loss of power, not able to get above 35mph with my foot to the floor with max revs of 2000rpm. In addition we've got huge amounts of black smoke from the exhaust and under the bonnet and fumes in the car which smell like exhaust. Also loss of power steering. The car has done a lot of miles, over 220 000, is this the end for it, or can it be fixed? Read more

Purchased a c70 3 weeks ago....2nd time battery has drained. The first was on the day i was scheduled to pick it up, but they put a new battery on and said it would be ok..went to drive her today and no battery..She is in for analysis (again). Does anyone know what my rights are..I have spoken to citizens advice and they quoted an act dating back to supply of goods act 1973..
But the finance company are saying they do not recognise this act...I have lost complete confidence in the car and would prefer not to pay out over next 4 years on a car that has a 3 month warrant and a recurring fault..what happens after the warranty has expired and fault comes back!!!

Please help.. Read more

As alluded to above, the fault was obviously present at the time of purchase (they had to put a new battery in before you could drive it away) so the onus is on them to fix it.

Politely but firmly remind them that you'd like the problem solving and give them a chance to do so ... if they fail to do so or start to get recalcitrant, that's the time to get serious with them.

Thats not the problem then, there are hundreds of reasons why a car engine runs rough as you say its a process of iimination or take it to a BMW specialist.

I decided to go for a VW cc GT and now I am unsure and have got myself quite confused!!! I need to get a new car by the end of the month and am looking at arranging test drives this weekend. I ideally want to spend about £15k, I have been looking and for the money can pick up below. I do about 20k a year, two 4 hour (250 mile) drives a week so need a reliable, comfy car which is hopefully economical and cheap(ish) to run. I'm in a Golf petrol 1.6ltr which I've got to return at the end of the month, which is only getting 25-35 MPG @90 and some of the extra urban figures for below are 60-70 MPG (appreciate this figure isnt at 90). If you can offer some help or advise re below I would be extremely grateful.

ECU needs programming when the tank is topped up. You need to make sure you put the correct additive as there are two types, sorted by chassis number.
It's also very expensive !

There has been much discussion about the new MOT. I cannot decide what to do for the best. My car is in excellent condition at 7 years old with 165K miles. It has sailed through previous tests and would do so again. Dealer maintained and well kept. However, 2 years ago SWMBO did for a door when a bollard jumped in front of her at Sainsbury's (that's her story anyway). Entire new door fitted. Since then, everytime I turn on the ignition after the usual 'Fasten Seatbelt' there is a beep and a 'Lights Failure' message flashes up, it goes off as soon as the engine is started. All the lights work perfectly and have done all the time since this started. Door fitter could not find a problem, main dealer cannot find a problem, so as it really does not bother me I just ignore it. What will new MOT make of this? Surely, if the warning is false and the lights work perfectly then the car is roadworthy and this is just an electronic glitch. The car is a Skoda Superb 1.9PD TDi. Anyone have any ideas either about the MOT or a cure for the 'fault'. Cheers Concrete Read more

>> The 'fault' could even be missed anyway, it is only on for a few seconds after the 'fasten seatbelt' warning.

It may be it's supposed to do that as a check. What's the handbook say?

Has anybody experienced broken suspension springs Read more

Cyd

Broken springs are becoming more common. My MoT tester was telling me he sees several a week.

It's a combination of cost reduction at manufacturers (forced onto suppliers) which compromises quality and a deterioration in the road surfaces.

Hi can anyone help me, my daughter was driving home last night and it started raining and her window screen wipers just stopped working for no reason they are now half way up the window screen and will not turn on but the back window wiper is working? Can anyone help I need to try and fix it myself as I don't have any money for a garage bill .. Thank you. Louise Read more

Probably a blown fuse. Check the fuses in the fuse box.

However, it may be worth first reading the thread currently going on in "Legal Matters" about Citroens, fuse boxes and, erm, cars catching fire(!) It would appear from that that a sudden cessation of wiper service is one of the clues that something's up in that area....

Hi I have just read the comment on Toyota etc.My wife's car is not effected. But I thought I had read that airbags had to be checked after 10 yrs anyway ? These companies should receive bad press for their action. Neil Wrench
