accelerating gently or driving up a slope the engine cuts out, the instrument panel warning lights illuminate immediately and the speedo needle returns to rest, then after a few seconds the engine fires again and runs normally, after a further few moments the instrument lights go out. We have changed the flywheel speed sensor and the wiring and socket connected to it seem fine. We are at a loss and ask for help. There is no misfire or uneven running. Thanks Read more

Check the battery and earth connections (particularly the one under the battery, you'll need to remove it) for corrosion.

Hi All.

My 1975/76 Fiesta faild its MOT on both rear Macpherson struts having excessive movement on the upper attachments. Take them out and renew top bushes I thought. Undid bottom mounting bolts as per my Haines manual, but when it came to the top mounts I discovered that the Haines book was for the earlier model Fiesta that had 2 bolts to undo to drop the strut - this one didn't have any that I could see, only the centre nut that I was loathe to undo until I had taken some advice.... I have had an F11 from new and completed 34,000 in 14 months. I am still on the first set of tyres at the front - but have noticed a "thrumming" noise at speeds over 40 mph which sounds not unlike a wheel bearing on the blink. BMW have looked at the vehicle twice - but tell me this is an acceptable level of tyre noise as the run-flats wear down.

Anyone else noticed this issue? Read more

If its a wheel bearing you should hear the noise change as you corner, usually its the one you are throwing the weight on to, if it doesn't change it possibly is the tyres.

I have a 2013 Golf Mk 7, with the 2.0tdi engine attached to a dsg box. I traded in my Mk5 2.0 tdi 170 dsg for it.

I wish I had not bothered. The mpg in the new one - supposedly much higher - is actually much worse. I run it in eco mode, I turn off the aircon, and i do all the sensible things to get the mpg up. The car has done 39 mpg from new, and its best ever run was 45 mpg. It has never recorded 50 mpg.... Read more

I parked my car at a First Great Western railway station yesterday and I received a Civil Parking Notice.

I have an annual parking permit, which was clearly displayed in the vehicle at the time. The parking attendant even had the cheek to stick the ticket right next to the permit! ... Read more

Hi all,

I've been struggling with odd vibration/rattle in my car, mainly felt in the steering wheel, for a few years now in my Peugeot 406 HDI. The vibrations are only really felt when the car is idling - it goes away completely as soon as the engine hits above 1000 rpm. It is worse when cold but doesn't completely go when warm either. Lately, it has become worse - it's quite annoying. ... Read more

Hi all , just wanted peoples advice ......had my car MOT'd last week and it failed on a lower arm ball joint . I asked how much this would be to repair and I was told £160 , I asked how much was the actual part was and I was told £90 and then 2hrs labour to fit . As it happens they were a stones throw away from Euro Car Parts so I popped in there to get a price on the part and my registration details and the part prices were still on their system as the garage had just called them for a price .....the price for the part was £14.25 and that was to me not the garage who get a better price £11 ! I know garages mark up on parts but that's crazy ! Anyway it doesn't end there , I get my mechanic to do the job and in his opinion the ball joint wasn't too bad , slight movement but not a fail ( but that was his opinion ) so he replaced the ball joint and brake pads . I took the car back in for a re-test today and was asked for the keys so he could check the mileage . I watched ( the owner of the garage ) go out to my car , lean in and get a mileage reading and come back into the office . Not once did he even glance towards the wheel . He then charged me £14 for a re-test and handed me a certificate . I was stunned that he did not check to see that the work had been completed . What do you all think ? Read more

The mark up on parts is no more than any main agents puts on and the hourly rate might be a lot cheaper.
