Hi - sorry that my first ever post on here is a tale of woe. I have until now been a very happy Qashqai owner, been happy with Nissan and their customer care and servicing.... until now.

To give you the overview: car is 3 and half years old, so only 6 months out of warranty. full service history with a Nissan dealership. last service only 6 months ago. done approx 42k miles.

about 2 weeks ago, an engine warning light came on (the oil pressure one - and yes you can probably tell, i'm no mechanic!). Rang the dealership, drove it up to them (making one hell of a racket and limped there). And there it stays with no work undertaken so far. The dealership need to strip down the engine to work out what has actually gone wrong, but say it is either the short block (will cost circa £5k) or a full block (wiil cost circa £8k). As you'll appreciate neither of these options are particularly attractive (considering the car is now worth £8-9k). The dealership aren't prepared to help me out given just out of warranty, so now in the hands of Nissan Customer services.

had a number of protracted conversations with them and now been escalated to their management. In a nut shell, they will as a maximum put 40% towards this, but only once a diagnostic is undertaken (ie an engine strip down) which is £460 for which i have to fully fund, and if at the end of that we don't agree on what happens next, it gets reassembled for another £460 at my expense.

my biggest worry / concern that i would like advice from others on is - as it seems something seriously mechanical has failed with the car, outside of my control, on a relatively young, looked after car - shouldn't Nissan be doing more? Economically, i dont think i can put more than £2k to this otherwise I may as well walk away - but i really dont want to as loved this car.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this or have any pearls of wisdom?? Read more

I did ring the dealership before taking it up to them and they advised I brought it up to them... Sounds like I need to drop that bit into the conversation with Nissan...

Thats will in all probability be denied, don't suppose you got the name of the person who told you to destroy your engine?

Hmm thinking about it, i'd be having a long chat to the dealer principal about this very thing.

My December 2010 Corsa D 1.2i (85) petrol manual has done 8000 miles and engine makes a faint ticking noise, barely discernible above tyre noise when driving but quite noticeable when idling at rest. Think I've heard similar noise on other similar 1.2's in car parks etc. (Similar engine, 79 bhp, in my previous 2005 Corsa C, ran beautifully quietly). Is this anything to worry about? Read more

Yes, you should't hear tappets or camchains while you're driving. Has it got any oil in?

Just been talking to a friend who has a 1.8 MX5, it seems 30 - 35 mpg is the best one can expect from these, even a 70 mile trip on uncongested level roads returns about 30 - 32, driven sensibly.

The 12 year old Alfa he just disposed of did better, my i30 hatchback will easily give 40+ on the same journey.... Read more

Mine's averaged over 41mpg from the first seven tankfuls, and it's not run in yet. Mixed driving but no heavy congestion or short trips. Driven up to the legal limit and (now it's running in) regularly taken to 70mph in 3rd. That's with 17" wheels which won't be as efficient as the standard 16" ones.

It sounds as if something is wrong with the car in the OP. Outside bet: some Japanese cars in particular run very badly and give 4-5 mpg less on some brands of petrol (BP and Sainsbury's in particular). The additive package doesn't seem to agree with them. Try Shell, Esso or Texaco.

I've got a problem with the switch on the drviers side of my Polo. The drivers window doesn't work at all and the passenger one does but only opens regardless of whether the button is pushed down (for open) or pulled up (for close).

The central locking switch does nothing as well.... Read more

For transverse engined cars, there's only about 3 makers of 4wd systems - Magna, BorgWarner and Haldex (now owned by BorgWarner) even though each car brand gives them different names including VW's 4Motion and Audi's Quattro.

It's a matter of electronics whether the system give 0% torque to the rear in normal circumstances, ie 2wd normally or retains a minimum, eg 10% torque to the rear like Subaru to give faster response.

With the price of petrol where it is, and rising, I am thinking of having my engine cleaned internally by this "System". Reports seem to be favourable, in the main, mentioning improved consumption and smoother running ie all the thjings you hear about additives and other snake oil! Has anyone had this work done and what do they think of its benefits, if any? Read more

I think you'd be better spending that £100 on Shell VMax (or similar super unleaded) at every tankfull instead of ordinary. £100 is enough for about 8-10k miles depending on your car. Also increase the frequency of oil changes and flush the motor at each change.

I've been running my Saab 9-3 Aero 2.0T (with a Maptun tune to 260hp/360Nm) on super unleaded for the last 10k or so. I've also been changing the oil every 4k (with flush) since I bought it (have now done 16k in it - so 5 changes, it only had 3 changes in its first 42k!!). I have had several people comment recently on how smooth and quiet the engine is. And not just passengers - people in car parks who walk past it and simply can't hear it running.
It also drives much better. Noticeably so - and not just because it's got extra power, that tune was applied within weeks of buying it....

Hi All,

I've just returned back from the South of France last Sunday, having hired a car for 10 days and received a speeding ticket bill for a speeding offence whilst over there, which was posted to my UK address.... Read more

Ethan is not the OP ,the op has said he would have paid the fine but it took so long for him to receive it the fine had grown beyond all reason.I agree about the EU/Euro he will have a long time to wait for this organisation to go bankrupt but that is another discussion.

I am taking MB to court over a faulty CVT gearbox. The car was purchased from MB Retail when it was one year old and done 13K mileage. 2 and half years later having done another 24K (total 36K) it has developed a continuous whiring noise. Apart from the continuous noise the CVT seems to behave ok. The vehicle has FMBSH.

MB have inspected the vehicle and state it is coming from the CVT. They want just over £5200 to fix it. I have had this seen by other garages who also confirm it is coming from the CVT... Read more

And thanks to the OP for responding to the new enquiry, I think some credit be extended - not everyone comes back to the forum with a result or is prepared to help with other similar situations.

My 2004 BMW E46 320d Touring is not jarringly uncomfortable, but on 205/55/16 Michelin Primacy HP summer tyres it could be a great deal more compliant. I have a set of Michelin Alpin A4 winter tyres on steel rims for the car, and their ride comfort is amazing, albeit with a slight penalty in fuel consumption. I do strongly recommend the Alpin A4 winter tyres.

When the Primacy HP tyres needed replacing, I replaced all four with the new Continental EcoContact 5 tyres, having read good reports online regarding noise and ride quality. Continental have actually designed these tyres to have very flexible sidewalls, yet still claim top-of-the-class rolling resistance.... Read more

Mini Clubman not starting

I have a Mini Clubman '57 plate, 1.6 diesel engine with FSH with Mini, recently the car refuses to start, but this is intermittant. The car has been in the Mini garage for 2 weeks now and they can't get to the bottom of it. They thought it was water in the fuel, but this has been sorted, a full service carried out and the car still refuses to start, just turns over, but never quite kicks in. The dealer is so perplexed that they have sent a Puma Case (case study) to Mini HQ to try to get a boffin to get to the bottom of it. Any idea as to why this would be, the dealer said it was all fixed last week, but when they went to bring it round on collection and after 3 days of it starting every time, it failed to start again - hence the case study. This is the first problem we have had with this car in 5 years? Read more

Hello,

I know your post was 2 years ago, but i have the exact same problem with my Mini one D REG05 .

I have had a diagnostic test done by my mechanic and had the crank shaft sensors changed (mini official part), fuel pump (which seemed to fix it for a week or so) then I found your post, which I told my mechanic about however they can't seem to find any valves on the fuel line.

If you could remember anything that could assist me or put me in touch with your mechanic I would be most grateful

They would now like me to take the car to a specialist diagnostic center which sounds very expensive and would rather see if I can get sorted before hand so any advice would be great

Many thanks
Kelly
