Which cars offer a 2 AND 4 wheel drive option? - I hate cars but I need one

I want to replace my Nissan X Trail. Are there other makes/models which offer the ability to drive in 2, 4 and 'auto' mode? Can someone help me get started here please

Most of the SUVs you see on the road are 2wd and engage 4wd (or AWD some might more accurately say) when they detect loss of traction. An override switch is usually there to force the 4wd on demand.

In fact I should have said most you see on the road are 2wd. Some have the option fitted

New 2013 CRV is 4wd until it detects no slippage it become FWD.

BMW X1 can be 2wd (s-mdl) or 4wd (x mdl)- 4wd version is RWD until it detects slippage!

The Suzuki SX4 - SZ5 version has those three modes, though it's a fair bit smaller than the X-Trail.

Dacia Duster, so long as you specify a 4WD model it has this combination.

Strictly, the 2013 CRV is FWD until it detects slippage and then it becomes 4WD. There is no manual override.

It is also available as a pure FWD model.

The new crv actually set off in 4wd, as mentioned, then reverts to 2wd if able.

Other cars that will engage four wheel drive.

Cashcow, some models.

Kuga, some models.

Rav4, some models.

And the best of them all the Mazda CX-5, some models.

That's strange, I've had my 2013 CR-V for three months and it's never done that?

Would you know though - the mark of a good intelligent 4wd system is that yoy don't notice it.

I am intrigued by this information - where does it come from?

The owners manual only states "Your vehicle is equipped with the AWD system. When the system senses a loss of front wheel traction, it automatically transfers some of the power to the rear wheels".

Can't find any mention of it starting in 4WD?

I went to Salzburg for a week, this time last year. Booked a group ? car and was told it would a be a "Golf or similar". When I got there there was a row of Yetis and I was given one of them. 6 speed diesel, comfy, capacious and very economical. ISTR that it had a button to engage 4 wheel drive but I do not think it engaged aurtomaitcally if a loss of traction was detected. I did not need 4WD and din'r have time to read the handbook fully!

As GB says, the Dacia Duster 4x4 offers this facility.

In fact the 4WD system fitted to the Duster is reputedly the same as that on the X Trail.

For transverse engined cars, there's only about 3 makers of 4wd systems - Magna, BorgWarner and Haldex (now owned by BorgWarner) even though each car brand gives them different names including VW's 4Motion and Audi's Quattro.

It's a matter of electronics whether the system give 0% torque to the rear in normal circumstances, ie 2wd normally or retains a minimum, eg 10% torque to the rear like Subaru to give faster response.
