they can suffer from wiring loom issues across the front crossmember (i have seen 2 with broken wires here)

its obviously in limp mode if it wont get above 40, so there must be fault codes, but don't rely on P---- EOBD codes, you need a manufacture specific reader to extract certain codes from vauxhalls....

I see that Honest John has a comment on the Nissan Micra review about problems with the clutch, My wife is thinking of buying a 2011 model, manual 5 gear, 8000miles on the clock

searched the site can't find any info on the issue, do I need to avoid the K13 or can it be fixed under warranty?... Read more

Its not just small engined small cars, this premature clutch wear can be seen increasingly on modern cars including some very expensive 4x4's.

The 4x4 i have in mind the engine was too small (bigger now) in swept volume for its very high first gear (powerful enough once the turbos are spinning merrily but lacking low down grunt as so many modern engines do), hence IMO the clutch is being slipped constantly but unconciously in use to get the vehicle moving from rest and at moving junctions....

I am looking a cheap supermini - so maybe 6, 7 years old and 80-100K. I know to my great cost (£1,500) that the Renault Clio engine is great until it goes wrong. On researching I found that small engined common-rail diesels are typically not as reliable as the old diesels, being under much greater stresses, which they most likely will sometime after 80,000 miles, even if properly serviced.

I know that Toyota have a great reputation for reliability, but common rail is a rather special case of pushing the technical boundaries. So, I hope that an expert who works on such small engined common rail diesels may be able to tell me if I can expect the same type of problem with the 1.4D-4D too. Read more

I have owned a Yaris d4d since 2006. And diy'd it. No DPF fitted on mine.. if you buy one with one fitted - post 2005 - they can block with lots of short runs. I believe.

Hi all ,
I've recently been looking for a cheap runabout and decided on either a BMW 3 ,merc c ,or a jaguar x type .Depending on a price up to £3000 and mileage less than 100k.
Other than that manual or auto would be fine ,petrol preferred but diesel ok.leather if possible .

I finally agreed to buy an x type from e bay ,2003 with a new mot 77000 miles with history ,price £1650.

As always I do a VOSA check before I buy a car to check the mileage .With the jag the mileage was ok ,but a month before the car passed its current test ,it failed at a different garage on extensive corrosion in both sills and in the McPherson strut mounting .i cancelled the purchase because I didn't want a car that was so badly corroded and may not have been properly repaired .Or had a dodgy mot .

I googled x type corrosion as above and it seems to be a massive problem on x types ,some of the pictures are horrendous ,more like cars from the 70s than the 00s .
Have any other members come across this.

If you want to here about premature corrosion and rust, I suggest you speak to your local Nissan/Suzuki service centre about the Pixo/latest Alto.

The quality of the paint work from the Indian factory leaves alto to be desired.

Hello - any battery nerds out there? I have a CTEK charger for my 13yo focus (the battery has been replaced at some point), and have recently had to use the charger for the first time. I'm pretty busy working from home at the moment, so the car gets very few outings - maybe a 6-mile round trip to the shops once every week. This has resulted in one very dead battery, and I've had to jump-start it quite a few times in the last month.

This week I decided to crack out the maintenance charger... It seems to work really well. I plugged it in yesterday to charge the battery. All indicators were good. Then it started raining hard, so after only one hour and a half, I had to disconnect everything to prevent my extension leads from swimming down the pavement!... Read more

Yes, I can now officially confirm that the battery is dead! It does hold just enough charge for 2 days, but nothing more than that... So yeah. I need to get out more and get a new battery :)

Hi all, after a bit of advice for winning a great battle against my petulent zafira. It has developed a cylinder 4 misfire. a compression test showed zero pressure in this cylinder, so thinking maybe a stuck inlet valve. Tried putting through Wynns Combustion cleaner to see if that would help incase of carbon buildup. No luck! It had an engine flush, oil change and filters changed 6 weeks ago just before mot. everything fine. 2 days after mot, engine light came on for a couple of days but then disappeared so left it. Driving fine until one week ago when i drove on a frosty morning. the handbarke had frozen on so i took it down the ringroad to build up heat to release it, get up a speed and warning lights come on and the car starts misfiring. When i changed the oil i used 10w40 which should be fine, but 5w30 is the recommended viscosity. Would another engine flush and oil change with recommended oil maybe help? I'm trying to cover all the bases and try smaller solutions before i strip the head down and check the valves. Has anybody had this happen to them? Any suggestions? Read more

If its not compression related you need to check the vacum pipes and breather pipes for leaks, also worth making sure the servo isnt leaking air causing the misfire.

HJ advises against buying a second hand turbo diesel car on the grounds of reliability and subsequent expense. I wonder now if the same rules apply to petrol cars with a turbo?

Modern BMWs and Fords now have petrol turbo engines and we normally buy two or three year old cars with modest mileages. Is it still safe to do so or does one need to shell out for a proper dealer warranty every year? Its getting a bit like old televisions that were rented because they went wrong so often!... With a water cooled turbo, how does the water cool it when it is glowing hot? Will it not just boil the water? Would really like to know.

The water passes through the CHRA (Centre hub rotating assembly), not the turbine housing. The water does boil, and this removes vast amounts of heat and stops the oil in the bearing assembly from coking....

My daughter bought a March 2012 version 2 weeks ago having done just under 13K miles. The sales person and the service book says services every 20k miles or 2 yearly. When I asked regarding oil and filter change the same advice. I know you get many similar questions such as this and I would think an oil change is overdue and should be done every 10K miles. Do you agree she should not wait until 20K miles? Indeed should not ALL cars get an oil change and filter every 10K miles to preserve the engines?..... Read more

Hi, I am looking for some advice on weather I have been let off with a warning or I should expect to get a court summoning in the post?

I am from the UK. I was driving back from a party with 4 of my mates at 1:30AM on Sunday morning and I noticed i was being followed, not thinking much into it and with it being dark I did not know it was the police. I carried on at a high speed. I was driving about 45mph through a 30 zone and at 70 on a 60mph road. The police finally put the lights on and pulled me over after following me for about 3 miles. I pulled over immediately and rolled my window down. The police officer asked my name and asked where I was going to which i replied 'home' he then went on to tell me that i had been driving 45 in a 30 and 70 in a 60 and said that i had been braking on some straight roads. He asked if i had anything to drink to which i honestly replied no. He asked where i had been and what i had been doing, i told him where i had been and that i had been to a party. At this stage i noticed the other police officer standing behind the car writing the registration number down. The officer who was speaking to me then asked one more time if i had been drinking i said i hadn't and he said 'ok, you can go' and returned to the police car.

He didn't ask to take a look at my licence or any other documentation and did not give me a verbal notice of prosecution. Does this mean that I will be getting a court summoning in the post or have i got off lightly with just a warning?

Also the police drove past my house slowly twice yesterday as if they were checking something out. That might be a coincidence but I thought it may be important.

Please let me know what you think?
Thank You Read more

"but I see no sin in driving along a good road, in good conditions at an appropriate speed."

Neither do I concrete but it is against the law so that is why the police are involved....
