Volkswagen Polo III - 2000 - 2001 6N2 - Drivers side window and central locking switch - csgmart

I've got a problem with the switch on the drviers side of my Polo. The drivers window doesn't work at all and the passenger one does but only opens regardless of whether the button is pushed down (for open) or pulled up (for close).

The central locking switch does nothing as well.

Using the key in the drivers door does not operate the central locking, however the central locking for both doors and the boot operates correctly using the key in the passenger door lock.

The passenger window switch works correctly.

I've checked all the fuses and they seem fine.

I've taken the switch gear out of the drivers door. Within it there are 3 switches (one for each window and one for the central door locking). They do not seem to be connected together so assume the fault does not lie within the switch itself?

Where do I go next? Is it more likely to be a wiring problem than a switch?

To add to this thread - I've also tried swapping the wires for the electric windows to see if the fault lies in the switch. I got exactly the same results - e.g. drivers side completely dead and passenger side would only open even if switch pulled up (to close it).

I've not got any means of testing the switch in any other way (have no access to a multi meter) - I am guessing the next step is to check the wiring loom going from the car into the door?

Check wiring where it runs from the door pillar to the door through the rubber sleeve.Very common for the wires to fracture or corrode..hth

sounds like it's most probably a wiring issue. I'd agree to check where the cables pass between door and pillar first, especially if it's one of those cars with a connector here.

Problem fixed. Thanks to suggestions to investigate the wiring. Sure enough one wire had completely snapped and two more were on their way out.

I've affected a temporary repair but will implement more permanent fix when time allows.
