Speeding fine in France - any thoughts - paul45

Hi All,

I've just returned back from the South of France last Sunday, having hired a car for 10 days and received a speeding ticket bill for a speeding offence whilst over there, which was posted to my UK address.

My first inclination was to pay it (107 kmh in a 90 kmh zone), given that it is was 45€, and it also states that there will be no points will be added to my licence, given that there is no jurisdiction for French offences in the UK.

I regularly travel in France and use both my own vehicle and hire cars, so I didn't want to have any future problems with unpaid fines.

Any BR's had similiar experiences?

Thanks

P

Only 45euros? pay up and forget it. Mate has just got a nip for 79 mph in a 70 zone on a motorway and expectimg more than that.

oldroverboy is right, pay up and avoid potential hassle in future.

Interesting about the 79mph. I know a few local policemen and they always say that you are very unlucky to get pulled below 80mph. Maybe your mate got a 'keen' one. Shame. Cheers Concrete

If its genuine and you are guilty of the offence then I would pay it could save a lot of hastle in future.

€45? Pay up - there's a good chance the hire company will put your name in the window and if you get done again (hope not), they'll throw non-payment charge at you as well.

I live in France-I got stopped by a live gendarme with a pair of laser binoculars about two weeks ago-110 kmh in a 90 limit going into a 70 limit. After the usual paperchase where they demand to see every possible document relating to you, your car and your life I received a polite request to slow down in future, a handshake and a salute. Must have passed the attitude test or something - or because I'm on a UK licence it might have been too much paperwork for him.

I suggest you pay up and get a receipt .... it may well avoid problems later

I got stopped for speeding on A26 100 miles from Calais ... 150kph in 130kph zone, paid an on the spot fine in cash, got a receipt too. Matter closed.

I had thought I'd be frog marched to the nearest cash machine to empty my bank account, so was 'pleased' with such a modest fine at €45.

Yes just pay it,

I got clobbered for doing 110 in a 90 zone in Spain, in a hired renault Scenic, from Avis. I got a letter through the post about 3 weeks later, they wanted 300 Euros or 150 if i settled inside 2 weeks, so I did.

Danger is you go back there and get arrested, your name will certainly be on a databse for the car hire company and it will catch up with you.

The french are getting very militant with their speed cameras.

I have a business in France and what we do there is, all the company cars are registered to our company, with only the 3 initials of the driver. eg Mr JMA xxx xxx so we pay the fines immediately, they never ask for the licence details, then recover the fine from the driver, thus they avoid ever picking up points.

Their system is just a way of raking in cash, but they are less interested in handing out points ( in fact you start with a clean licence with 12 points there , and they get deducted )

Yep Hollande's Socialists have run out of other peoples money and are seeking to harvest more form foreigners. Roll on the Eurozone going Bankrupt. UKIP get us out of the EU.

Right then - pay up it is, I had written the cheque and was about to post, but thought, I just wonder....

I will take advice though and get a receipt / take photo of bank statement with cashed cheque etc. on the just in case principle.

Thanks for advice, off to post letter now !

All too common on the continent.

They take the entirely sensible approach that life's too short to ponce about with courts and fancy lawyers wriggling people off the hook.

The answer is to eschew points and pitch the fine at; "Cough up and try not to do it again." levels. Usually a sliding scale and can get eye-wateringly expensive if you take the michael. 45 euro is a wrist slap.

I could be worse, we were caught in France on the Peage at 192kph, read about the size of the fine here:

www.historicracer.com/editors-diary/caught-speedin.../

Just pay the fine, then it goes no further.

I just got a fine via registered post for a speeding offence I apparently commited in August 2012 ! - over a year ago. It's 140 Euro if I pay up within 30 days of notice.

Tempting not to pay but do plan to return to France in the future so will prob pay up for peace of mind.

Very hard to find the definitive on what would happen if I don't though.

Nothing will happen if you do not pay the fine there is no co operation as yet between the two countries but a marker could be put on the car you were in so if you use it in France they could stop you but they won,t they have other thing to do.

Mmmm I have just received a fine issued 18.10.13 for €300 if I pay within 28 days for speeding in an Avis hire car near Bordeaux in December 2012. Can't remember the event (but was there). Seems excessive and out of time so I just wonder if there is some kind of scam going on?

Daddles,

why not write to your MEP to see if they are allowed to pass you a fine for an alleged offence a year ago?

Speeding fine in France - any thoughts - Collos25

Once agian for those who do not do their homework there is no agreement between this country the UK and any other country in the EU to collect motoring fines.

If it is geniune theywill probably get in touch with the hire company (if it was a french car) and charge your CC.

Just getting further down the line on this. Apparently the original fine was 135 euros but has escalated to 375 (or 300 if paid early) because it hasn't been paid. Either French/English post or Avis/controle automatise at fault because it hadn't got to me before the 25th October.

You can appeal the fine but only if you pay a deposit of ....375 euros and you have no option to pay less. Can't imagine lending the French the 375 euros while they decide whether or not to forgive me and accept the lesser amount - which I would have 'cheerfully' paid - so guess this is heading for the bin.

Relativ comment by Ethan Edwards.

I hear some pathetic comments about the EU, but come on Ethan , naughty boy blaming teacher, if its 30,40 90, 100K or whatever thats what it is wherever it is Get caught take it on the chin.

Speeding fine in France - any thoughts - Collos25

Ethan is not the OP ,the op has said he would have paid the fine but it took so long for him to receive it the fine had grown beyond all reason.I agree about the EU/Euro he will have a long time to wait for this organisation to go bankrupt but that is another discussion.
